I once again have done it. 13 hours in the car yesterday to get the family to the beach. But now we’re here and settled in, and that nice 6am Atlantic Coast sun had me and the kids wide awake by 6:30. But I have some time to write!
We start today with Andrew Abbott and Kyle Harrison. These two will ever occupy the same exact part of my memory. We first heard of them both when they were coming up through the minors, putting up insane numbers.
We’re really talking about that 2022 season most in my memory. Both guys just had unreal K-BB%, so you know that caught my attention. I’m sure I owned both of them the second they got the call to the Majors. But their Major League marks prior to this year have both been disappointing.
Abbott: 3.78 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 22.4% K%, 9.2% BB%, 1.5 HR/9
Harrison: 4.47 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 22.5% K%, 7.8% BB%, 1.5 HR/9
They’re both left-handed, and I’d say they have the same deliveries except for the fact that I have no idea if they do. I’m blacked out from all Reds games, so I can’t watch Abbott, and Harrison is using pitching after I’m asleep - and I also hardly ever watch games. So yeah, I haven’t seen a ton of them.
TO GET TO THE POINT, THOUGH. They’ve both been brilliant this year.
Let’s take another look at Abbott. The 2024-2025 comparison:
The K% is way up. The SwStr% is up a decent bit to a league-average mark of 12%. The Strike% is up 2.6 points, which is a large increase. Definitely a lot of serious positive movement. But the 12.0% SwStr% still doesn’t match up with the 28.2% K%.
The four-seamer has gone from a 9% SwStr% to 11%. Good news there. And maybe he has discovered some extra deception and command this year. It seemed like the left-handed delivery was part of the crazy minor league strikeout totals for both of these guys - because they’ve never had big stime “stuff”. Bottomline is that you’re starting Abbott for the near future, I just think that K% is going to bubble down 25% or so.
Let’s look at the numbers for Harrison:
Huge marks on the four-seamer (19% SwStr%, 55% Strike%, 29% Ball%). In his case, the velo is way up on the pitch:
That’s very intriguing. The slurve is also up almost 3mph and it’s been great on its 54 offerings. However, remember that Harrison started his season with four relief appearances. We have to beware of the increase velo, then. But he averaged 95.3 on that Saturday start, so there’s reason to believe the velo might be here to stay.
I think both guys are worthy of rostering in all leagues right now. It’s been a bit tough to find reliable arms off of waivers of late, and these two at least have a floor of being decent even if they regress.
I wanted to also make a note about Chad Patrick. He’s a Brewers arm who has taken a spot in the Brewers rotation and put up some competitive numbers, something the Brew Crew really needed coming into this year.
11 GS, 58 IP, 2.97 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 21.2% K%, 7.2% BB%, 0.6 HR/9
Looking a little bit like Tobias Myers last year with the nice ERA but pretty poor K% and K-BB%. But he’s held it together, giving up no more than three earned runs in any start this year.
The JA ERA is fine at 3.63, but nothing special. He’s been good (so far) at limiting extra base hits, and you can see that with the 1.79 WHIP+ and .322 xwOBA allowed.
But he is low-whiff (10.2% SwStr%), poor command (36.6% Ball%), and heavy fly balls (27% GB%). He seems to be playing with fire without having been burnt thus far.
He’s a streaming option only, and even then, it’s tough to feel great about it.
We were keeping an eye on that Slade Cecconi start yesterday against the Angels. It did not go well.
4.1 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 3 SO, 3 BB, 3 HR
I’m always willing to forgive a bad start that comes on multiple homers given up. Homers are pretty random. Even if the best starters will have some poor outings because they give up a few longballs. But Cecconi is walking on thin ice already. He hasn’t exactly earned the right to forgiveness. And the 3:3 K:BB is bad. The SwStr% was just 8.4%. The pitch mix update on his 256 pitches:
Still some good marks in there, but it’s hard to expect them to stay nice, given how poor he’s been to this point in his career. But I’ll keep watching.
One more guy who has been interesting in his own right. Colton Gordon. Yesterday:
5 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 6 K, 1 BB, 16% SwStr%, 52% Strike%, 29.3% Ball%
That last number is what I’ve noticed the most about Gordon. This is a strike-thrower. Combining his minor league and Major League stats from this year, he’s walked just 11 baters in 62 innings (4.3% BB%).
His season ball rate is 28.7%. That’s best in the league if you limit to at least three starts.
Lowest Ball% 2025 SPs
Colton Gordon 28.7%
Tarik Skubal 28.8%
Justin Steele 29.7%
Hunter Greene 29.8%
Richard Fitts 30.7%
That is a nice list to be on. Gordon is not anything like those other guys in his strikeout ability. He has jsut a 9.2% SwStr%, and that’s held the Strike% down to 52%.
The four-seam is slow, but it’s worked nicely so far. No other pitch stands out, and he’s mostly a two-pitch guy. So this isn’t likely to be a fantasy consideration, but I wanted to point out just how many strikes the guy is throwing. I love guys like that.
There were some real landmines yesterday:
→ Pfaadt: 0 IP, 6 H, 8 ER, -19.6 fantasy points
→ Luzardo: 3.1 IP, 12 H, 12 ER, 4 SO, 3 BB, 2 HR, -18 fantasy points
→ Warren: 1.3 IP, 6 H, 7 ER, 2 SO, 4 BB, 1 HR, -13.5 points
Seems like all of that good luck Warren had going in May just reversed and then multiplied itself by two. Not to say he was unlucky yesterday, but there was a little bit of that. Any time you give up six hits and a .714 BABIP in 1.3 innings, there was some bad luck. I’d probably still stubbornly start Warren next time out, and we probably never should have really considered him against the Dodgers.
For the season, his JA ERA sits at 2.94 and his K-BB% is at 19.4%. Those are very good numbers, and that’s the main point here when you’re looking at the larger sample.
Junior Caminero has closed the buy-low window, I think. He has four homers in his last four games and closed out May with a .561 SLG and seven homers.
He’s now hitting .265/.291/.512 for the season with 13 dingers on a 19.3% K%. The question with him has been about launch angle. He’s hit many balls on the ground in his young career so far. And what we saw just a few days back was that when he was launching the ball - he wasn’t hitting it nearly as hard.
In May:
→ 109.7 EV90
→ 104.6 EV90 on fly balls
^ So that’s still an issue. But:
→ 47% GB% (down from 52%)
→ 8.5 average LA (up fro 5.2)
More balls in the air, and that’s the most important thing to see. The guy swings the bat so, so hard. There’s no real world, I don’t think, where Caminero isn’t hitting 5+ homers a month on average.
His teammate Jose Caballero has been on a roll of late, and plenty of people have been asking me about him. This guy has gotten run over the last two years in fantasy leagues because of what he does on the bases. He stole 44 bags last year and has 19 already this year. He hasn’t been a full-time player, and hasn’t hit much, but both of those things have changed very recently.
In May:
→ 87 PA, .273/.345/.403, 1 HR, 12 SB
That’s a really good roto fantasy month. The steals alone make him roster-worthy in deeper roto leagues. The question would be - is he actually a better hitter this year?
The answer would seem to be “no”.
→ 2024: .212 xBA, .266 xwOBA, 28% K%, 5% BB%
→ 2025: .216 xBA, .282 xwOBA, 30% K%, 10% BB%
So the quality of contact still sucks, but there is one big change there - the walk rate. And more walks is good stuff for a base-stealer. That is powered by a much lower swing rate (50% → 44%). So that very well may be legitimate. If he’s swinging less, he’ll walk less. But it’s also possible pitchers pick up on that and just start throwing him a ton of strikes because they aren’t worried about him doing a bunchof damage (101.9 EV90 this year - very low).
But you can use him to get a ton of steals while he’s an everyday player. The floor in roto leagues is pretty decent.
One more thing - Spencer Schwellenbach ramped up the velo yesterday.
I would guess that that’s purposeful. Not just about feeling good that day. But he has 22 strikeouts and no walks in these last two starts. So that’s pretty good.
I have even more reason to believe in Ben Brown after yesterday. He didn’t start the game, so he won’t show up below. He threw the 2nd-7th inning and was awesome with no runs allowed on one hit and a 9:1 K:BB.
I’ll just state one more time that he has a 28% K%, a 7.5% BB%, and a 2.85 JA ERA. He’s been so, so much better than the results show. And I’d be pretty interested in grabbing him in deeper leagues.
There you go - sorry for missing yesterday, but I hope to have made up for some of it this morning.
