In the slate preview yesterday I pumped up Dustin May a bit.
“Let’s talk about the Dustin May play. For the first time that I can remember with May, he’s showing us a decent strikeout floor. He has at least five strikeout sin each of his last six outings. Since May 4th, he has a 28.3% K% with a 6.2% BB% and a 2.68 JA ERA.”
I should have known way better than to trust that guy.
The freaking sinkerballers. You just can’t trust them. They can’t reliably get strikeouts, and when you’re not getting strikeouts, just about anything can happen. And May isn’t exactly a control artist either. His walk rate is at 8.8% for the year, and he’s now had five starts with three or more walks.
May is unique and interesting and frustrating and exhilirating and fun to watch. He’ll forever be tempting and forever let you down. That’s not the right girl to dance with. You’ve gotta be careful out there.
Here are your highest standard deviations in fantasy point scoring this year.
Here’s the Luzardo plot:
His season doesn’t even look highly variable. It just looks like what the truth is. He was fantastic for 11 starts and then complete dookie for two in a row. 20 earned runs in his last two starts that’s so wild.
Looking at the highest minimums, we find that only four guys have scored double-digit points in every single start.
There are six SPs with 9+ starts who haven’t reached 20 fantasy points yet.
It was not a happy return for Eury Perez. Although I did watch a couple of innings, and I will say that he actually was looking pretty happy. He was smiling real big even when he loading up the bases. It struck me.
3 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 5 K, 2 BB, 11.4% SwStr%, 50% Strike%, 38.6% Ball%
It wasn’t a total disaster. The 50% Strike% is fine and the fastball velo was way up there at 98.5.
It’s a good reminder that returning to your prior form after surgery is no guarantee. And it often takes some time to get there. I wouldn’t be holding on to Eury too tightly in a redraft league, but I also wouldn’t be dropping him until we see him 4-5 times.
Nick Pivetta had a tough outing against the Dodgers. That’s not a surprise. The Dodgers are extremely tough. Let’s break down some matchup tiers using fantasy points scored per batter faced. The league average is 0.63 fantasy points scored (using DraftKings scoring) per batter faced. Here’s how I tier off these offenses, from most favorable matchup to least favorable.
Tier 1: COL (0.85)
Tier 2: LAA (0.76), PIT (0.74), TEX (0.74), CWS (0.73), BAL (0.71)
Tier 3: MIA (0.66), SF (0.66), CLE (0.66), SEA (0.66), ATL (0.66), WSH (0.64), TB (0.63), MIL (0.63), CIN (0.63), MIN (0.63)
Tier 4: KC (0.62), BOS (0.62), ATH (0.62), DET (0.61), HOU (0.61), SD (0.59)
Tier 5: PHI (0.57), STL (0.57), NYM (0.55), TOR (0.54), NYY (0.54), ARI (0.53)
Tier 6: LAD (0.51), CHC (0.51)
Those aren’t my rankings, they’re just the numbers seperated out by where they line up.
Let’s look at the updated 75th percentile bat speed leaders.
We see Jac Caglianone here. And then that Riley Adams guy must just have known he wasn’t going to be around for long so he wanted to get on top of a leaderboard somewhere.
That stat doesn’t do much to predict future success, as is made apparent by the presence of Jordan Walker, Jhonkensey Noel, and Sam Hilliard here.
I have Max Muncy on my home league fantasy team. And I’m usually dead asleep when the Dodgers are playing their games. And I get Twitter notifications from that home run alert account. So what has happened a couple of times recently is that I’ll wake up and look at who homered while I was asleep and I’ll see Max Muncy and I’ll be like hell yeah. I’ll get out of bed jumping and screaming in joy. But then I’ll read further and realize that it’s the other Max Muncy. This freaking guy! He double-barreled last night and now has three homers in five games since returning from AAA.
And all of this comes after I wrote an official letter to MLB to please either officially change this guy’s name or never allow him in MLB again.
But let’s take a look at our friend Maxwell. In the minors this year:
141 PA, .325/.397/.504, 3 HR, 23% K%, 8% BB%, 1 SB
In the Majors:
92 PA, .202/.228/.382, 4 HR, 29% K%, 3% BB%, 1 SB
His MLB Z-Contact is bad at 76.5%, and the overall contact rate is really bad as well at 64%. So that has turned into a ton of strikeouts. He’s also unlike his namesake in that he doesn’t like to take walks. But there is some raw power here. His EV90 is at 105.7 on the year and he’s up to a 9.7% Brl% after last night.
I have yet to actually see what this guy looks like. I have no idea if he’s even a real person. But here’s a video of him going yabbo to right center field last night. A pretty impressive swing, I have to say.
Only 72 hitters in MLB have hit a homer more than 375 feet to the opposite field. And Maxwell Muncy is now one of them.
Your ten furthest opposite field homers of the year:
Here’s that Judge blast from Sunday:
Jo Adell was mentioned here yesterday, and he went out there last night and hit another homer. He’s now #1 in the league in xwOBA over expectation over the last 15 days and he’s second in xwOBA.
Just a 13% K% in this sample. He’s been crushing. It won’t last for long, but I do think you can pick him up now and ride this out. As mentioned yesterday, the K% improvements have been there all year and he hasn’t given up the power indicators for it.
Another potential hitter add right now would be Otto Lopez. NOT OTTO KEMP. Lopez’s season so far:
200 PA, .233/.311/.375, 6 HR, 7 SB, 13.5% K%, 9.5% BB%
That’s a 20-20 pace over a 650 PA season. He missed a couple of weeks in early May. Since returning from the minors:
.239/.338/.448, 4 HR, 4 SB, 11.7% K%, 11.7% BB%
The K% is elite, and he’s brought the barrel rate up from 5.1% last year to 8.7% this year. He’s hitting more fly balls (20% last year → 27% this year), and that’s what has driven the power increase.
He doesn’t hit the ball super hard (103.7 EV90), but it’s enough to think he can be a 15-20 homer guy if everything else goes right. You get the steals, a decent batting average, and everyday playing time with him. Good deep league target, if nothing else.
Let’s check on our magic formulas and then get out of here.
Here are your 2025 season long hitting magic formula qualifiers (sub-20% K% and Brl% above 12%):
Here are your pitching magic formula qualifiers for the first version of it. That’s K% > 25%, BB% < 7, and GB% > 45%. Very short list
Kind of a lame short list, but that’s what it is. The second magic formula for SPs is SwStr% > 13% and Ball% below 34%. A much longer list!
That wraps it up for today!
