MLB Daily Notes - June 11th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
I’m BACK home and it feels amazing. Getting back in the regular swing of things, and let’s start it off with some daily notes before church!
Pitchers - Yesterday
Kodai Senga kept it going with a nice score against the Pirates, but he walked four more batters and that makes nine in his last two outings. So just when we thought the walk rate was going down, it’s back up to 14.3% on the year. That’s the stuff of nightmares.
He balances it out a little bit with a decent ground-ball rate, which you really need if you’re going to give out so many free passes, but it’s not an elite GB% as it’s settled in around 48%.
I think we can expect a whole lot more of the up-and-down stuff he’s given us:
Bobby Miller did it again, and I think he’s pretty clearly the best rookie SP going right now. A 14.4% SwStr% yesterday over six scoreless innings.
He now has a 26.4% K% and an 8.0% BB%, the K% is over 30% in his last two starts.
The pitch mix is an embarrassment of riches. Above-average Stuff+ on all five pitches, great strike rates on both fastballs and the slider, and an absolutely sick 21.3% SwStr% on the slider.
For the season
47.8% Strike% (right around the average)
12.6% SwStr%
18.4% K-BB%
Those are fine numbers, but they’ve been elite over the last two and the pitch mix is just stunning. This guy could be one of the best in the league as soon as next year, I’d think.
I know that a lot of the prospect guys talked him up, but really he was one of the more underlooked rookie SPs on his call-up. That had to do with his mediocre minor-league performance at the time of the call-up, but we should have been able to see through that (I didn’t). Even with all of the stuff we know, there are still plenty of misses in the fantasy baseball analysis world.
Someday we’ll have Statcast stuff at every level, and the Stuff+ data for all minor-league players will be out there, and then there will be basically no secrets. That will be good for the fantasy players that are ahead of the curve on stats and whatnot, but it does function to kind of make things less fun. We’re taking away a ton of the mystery with this publically available minor league data. Obviously, I’m a fan of it - as someone who bases my whole shtick here around being able to do stuff with numbers, but it is a little bit less fun knowing all of this stuff in some other ways.
AJ Smith-Shawver pitched Friday and I didn’t get into anything yesterday, so let’s take a look at his arsenal:
Pretty bad marks, but it’s just 125 pitches thrown so let’s take it easy. The Stuff+ in the very early sample on the fastball is 60 and the slider has a mark of 52. Can’t really trust those numbers after less than 100 pitches thrown, but it’s not a great sign!
Julio Teheran is turning the clock back, pitching pretty decently in the Majors after the Brewers resurrected him. 16 strikeouts and 3 walks over 24.1 innings since his call-up. The stuff isn’t awful, but it’s not good enough to believe in. I don’t think many people are going to get fooled, but definitely don’t start thinking there’s something here for your fantasy teams.
Quick check-in on Bryan Woo, who went for a 7:1 K:BB yesterday on 12 whiffs (a strong 14.8% SwStr%).
The Stuff+ on him is 135 overall
FF 129
SI 122
SL 155
So pretty good numbers, but it’s still early on him as well. The stuff+ numbers I’m citing in this post don’t even include yesterday’s game, so they might be much different on Woo on the next update since this was just his second start. But it would seem like this guy has some very good pitches and the 14.1% SwStr% and 54% Strike% over his first two starts is exciting. He’s someone to watch.

Pitcher/Pitch Changes
As predicted last week, Andrew Abbott brought the four-seam usage down in his second start. He threw more changeups this time around. Another good box score result with 5.2 scoreless, but he walked three and only struck out four.
His walk rate is way up at 15% now but the ball rate isn’t terrible. The most concerning thing is probably the lack of whiffs on the curve and changeup, but again - we’re talking about fewer than 50 pitches on both. We are definitely starting him next week, but if this walk rate stays high without a much, much higher SwStr% soon - we’re going to have to bail. He’s in for some disastrous outings in Cincy with that FB% and an 8% SwStr%. The smart thing to do is probably to bench him for now and see what happens, it could get really ugly.
Jameson Taillon is trying to figure it out. He has a 7.01 ERA on the year now and has bailed on the cutter recently.
He’s tried seven different pitches but nothing is working. I’m only talking about him because I thought he would be pretty good this year, and it’s gone really poorly. The silver lining is that he’s not walking many hitters, but clearly the command and swing-and-miss stuff just isn’t there right now.
It’s a Brayan Bello night tonight, and my fantasy team will be needing a good outing from him on Sunday Night Baseball! We see below what I’ve been talking about recently as he’s weirdly bailed on his sinker, which I think is his most effective pitch. Let’s see if it comes back tonight, I hope it does - but I’m also not going to sit here and talk like I know better than Bello and the Red Sox coaching staff, because I certainly don’t.

Pitchers - Recent Leaders
Jesus Luzardo is the only current MAGIC FORMULA QUALIFIER, which is weird to see - we usually have 5 or so names on there. He’s earning more strikes lately, which is what we need to see from him as a guy who has always been #nasty but has had major walk issues in the past.
I doubt it continues like that, and I think you’ll always get erraticism from Luzardo, but he’s going well right now and he’s just a guy you start every time because of the upside.
Michael Kopech was a bit underwhelming yesterday, but the 16% SwStr% and 50% Strike% were great, so he’s still looking very, very good.
There’s a lesson to be learned about Kopech. We knew that he had very good STUFF. He was always a guy to pop on the models and a guy that would flash serious upside, but the command and the walks and the hard contact were big problems for him. We should definitely be more into these kinds of guys moving forward, and I should have talked more glowingly about him. Stuff+ and all that business isn’t the gold standard by any means, it can take you down some bad paths, but it does tell you some true things. It’s a skill stat, meaning it’s fully in the pitcher’s control - it’s about what they can do physically. Command is too, but it’s not impossible to improve your command in a hurry, as we’ve seen with Kopech here. You can teach/improve command and you get luck into/out of hard-contact stuff, but you cannot take a guy throwing 89 miles per hour and make him throw 98 overnight.
So let’s keep an eye on these high-stuff, bad-results guys going forward, some of the names that stand out right now:
Taj Bradley
Grayson Rodriguez
Graham Ashcraft
Kyle Bradish
Jameson Taillon (ha!)
Ryne Nelson
Bryan Bello
Alek Manoah (lol)
Dean Kremer

Jordan Walker since the return to the Majors:
31 PA, .286/.355/.536, 2 HR, 15.4% Brl%, 6.5% K%, 89% Cont%, 58 GB%
Everything looking pretty amazing besides the ground-ball rate. An 89% Contact% with that kind of swing speed is something to note, although he hasn’t faced very good pitching in this short sample:
It seems like he’s only one little adjustment away from being an elite hitter, if he can get the GB% under 50% while keeping a Contact% above 75% - look out!
Tommy Pham is crushing the ball of late, and he makes for an interesting hitter streamer over the short term. There are presumedly more PAs available with Alonso out of the lineup, so maybe Pham will be in there every day - he has a 1.314 OPS and a .569 xwOBA in June.
