It is crazy how much money you can spend for almost nothing in return. That’s the takeaway from last night at the beach. I bought dinner (a very high-society dinner of pizza and chicken wings) for everybody and then we went to this little amusement park thing they have here. They used to have two parks like that here, but the one went out of business because they couldn’t afford to pay the carnies the $15 minimum wage they have here in New Jersey. That’s what you get with sweeping minimum wage laws, but I suppose we don’t have to get into that right here! So now there’s no competition for the other place and, enabling them to jack the prices up, and cha boy spent about $75 more so my kids could go around in circles a few times.
But that’s okay, we could handle it. The kids loved every second of it, it was probably their favorite part of the trip. But they’re still too little to go on stuff by themselves, so I got to find out that I also get motion sickness on something as innocent as the swings. That’s a real punch in the face.
I remember as a kid being bored and then just spinning around in circles until I would fall over and staring at the ceiling to watch it spin. Kids like being dizzy. But then you turn 25 or whatever and it’s one of the worst feelings you can have. I wonder why that is.
We got to the park early, so they weren’t open yet. So we had 30 minutes to kill. We got the kids ice cream again to kill some of that time. So they had it all last night.
But after we were done and walking home, Trea baby (2 years old) started asking to ride more rides and get more ice cream. So we told him no and he did this cute little grumpy face thing. He didn’t throw a fit, he just stiffined up like a board to make it hard for us to put him in the stroller, and then he just looked down with a real stiff look on his face the whole mile-long walk home.
So then you start thinking like dang why do we even go out of our way and spend the money to do fun things for these kids when they immediately get mad at you when it’s done. But no, you gotta do fun stuff. I mean, you have to do something. That’s one of the things you learn as a parent with young kids. You’ve got 12-16 waking hours with them every day. You have to cover that time. Sitting around doing nothing all day is not a viable option. So why not go spent seven grand for no long-term return at an amusement park, right!?
And maybe Trea baby learned something last night. I did tell him like “hey man, every fun thing has to end, and you’ can’t cry about it”. I think I said something exactly like that. I was holding back explaining to him the balance and order of God’s creation and Newton’s Laws and stuff. Every good has a bad, every positive has a negative. You’ve gotta roll with both. But I held it in and just kept it simple in my fatherly advice. Of course, he’s two years old and never has any idea what we’re talking about. But it felt good for me. And at the end of the day, how I feel is the most important thing.
Chad Patrick struck out eight on 19 whiffs and a 20.2% SwStr%. He’s been a little bit interesting for fantasy purposes this year as he’s kept runs off the board pretty well for the Brewers. Ironically, he didn’t do that last night even though it was his best whiff and strikeout work. He gave up five earned on seven hits and three walks. His season numbers:
The K-BB% is above 15%, which is about the minimum that we’re looking for when selecting fantasy pitchers. He’s been a better than average pitcher overall, but nothing really stands out to give him much upside.
He has kicked up the strikeouts lately. He sports a 27% K% and 8.2% BB% in his last three with a 14% SwStr%. The cutter has worked marvelously for him lately (56% Strike%, 18.2% SwStr%). He’s also been mixing it in with the four-seamer a lot more since May 11th.
So let’s split his season there.
Before May 11th (7 GS, 48% FC%, 20% FF%):
20.9% K%, 7.2% BB%, 9.3% SwStr%, 38.1% Ball%, .318 xwOBA, 3.67 JA ERA
Since May 11th (7 GS, 41% FC%, 29% FF%):
24.4% K%, 7.5% BB%, 12.8% SwStr%, 33.2% Ball%, .317 xwOBA, 3.27 JA ERA
Bringing those two fastball usages closer together seems to have worked nicely. I think Patrick is in play for 12-teamers now, especially since we keep losing arms to injury.
David Festa had a better start for the Twins.
6 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 2 BB
He threw a season-high 86 pitches. We said before that the Twins don’t have a ton of choice but to let him and whatever other young guys they have get deeper into the games. Pablo Lopez is gone, and now Zebby is on the IL. At the beginning of the year, it looked like the Twins had seven viable MLB starters. But we’ve once again learned the lesson that you can’t have too much pitching.
Festa’s SwStr% last night was elite at 19.8%. He was a bit wild (41% Ball%), and gave up a homer, but the changeup, four-seamer, and slider were all pretty nasty. I still like the guy. And the best sign is the six innings. He hadn’t even finished five in the Majors yet. I’d be starting Festa in most leagues right now, I think.
Eduardo Rodriguez pleased us. I tweeted positively about him yesterday and made him a part of the $25 to $250 challenge parlay (which hit!).
6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 1 BB, 17.3% SwStr%
For the season, he has a 24% K% with an 8.1% BB%. The JA ERA is at 3.41. He gives up a lot of fly balls (35% GB%), so that’s a little bit scary. I’m not saying that E-Rod is good, or a top-50 starter or anything like that. What I’m saying is that he’s not completely terrible. He’s capable of good outings. He’s had four starts this year that I’d call good. That’s out of 11, and he’s given up eight earned runs twice.
He’s better than the ERA he has right now, and I do think it’s fine to stream him in good matchups.
But basically everything I say is bunk now. After so much hyping up of Ben Brown, he had a terrible outing against the Phillies.
5.2 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 5 SO, 3 BB, 1 HR
I was hoping to see more changeups, but it came in at 8% usage again. The two-pitch mix does limit him. So while the underlying numbers are still great (19.4% K-BB%, 14.1% SwStr%, 3.00 JA ERA), it does make a difference that hitters can just sit on this four-seamer. And that pitch has now been out of the yard six times with a .418 xwOBA.
If we look at the hardest-hit four-seamers of the year:
Highest xwOBA Allowed on 4-Seamers
Brandon Pfaadt .486
Cade Povich .464
Chase Dollander .443
Grant Holmes .436
Gavin Williams .431
Jake Irvin .429
Justin Verlander .425
Ben Brown .418
Michael Wacha .413
JP Sears .407
Either Brown has to really develop and ramp up this changeup usage, or he has to really improve the four-seamer in order to be a consistently good big league SP. Or maybe both of those things! He will get strikeouts and have some strong outings in the Majors, but it seems like he’ll continue to mix in these bad outings that keep his ERA pretty high.
Jesus Luzardo bounced back! That wasn’t shocking to me. If I had him anywhere, I would have just kept starting the guy. So I hope that’s what you guys did.
We got another complete game yesterday, this time from Spencer Schwellenbach. But he gave up two earned runs like a loser. His last four starts:
28.1 IP, 2.22 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 31.8% K%, 1.8% BB%
That’s a 35:2 K:BB. I have $5 on him to win the NL Cy Young this year. But I guess that’s not looking super great right now with how Paul Skenes and Yoshinobu Yamamoto are pitching. And there are probably a few other names ahead of him as well. I looked up the odds:
Skenes -210
Yamamoto +500
Wheeler +900
Sale +1400
Webb +2000
Sanchez +3000
Ray +3000
Gore +3500
Senga +4500
Peralta +4500
Schwellenbach +5500
So he’s not close, but things can change in a hurry. Pretty much any pitcher can have their elbow blow up and then basically not exist for 1.5 years. Not that I’m hoping that happens to those ten guys ahead of him. It’s just $5. It would take me at least $7 to wish injury on ten other human beings.
Marcelo Mayer stole the spotlight from Roman Anthony with two bangers last night. He now has three homers on a .250/.313/.523 slash line with a 27% K% and an 8.3% BB% in his 48 PAs. Solid .253 xBA and .346 xwOBA. He’s a pretty aggressive hitter (53% Swing%, 35% Chase%), but he has a solid 85.5% Z-Contact% so far.
He has high bat speed (80th percentile or so), but doesn’t have eye-popping EV numbers this year. His EV90 in AAA was solid at 106, but not elite. And his max this year is 111. So he looks more like a “decent” power guy rather than having some 35-40 homer ceiling right now. He’s also hit just 20 homers total in his last two seasons in pro ball (28.6 PA/HR).
Knowing that, it’s good to see the decent contact rate. He’ll need to get balls in play to earn fantasy value.
Byron Buxton hit the second longest homer of the year last night. His season update:
220 PA, .279/.336/.518, .239 xBA, .342 xwOBA
He is swinging for the fences and has a high 28.6% K% with a 79.9% Z-Contact%. Lots of whiff, but the raw skills make up for it. Plenty of homers, and plenty of steals too. He swiped his 11th bag of the year last night. He is a must start outfielder.
This leaderboard continues to draw my interest every day.
Jo Adell and Hunter Goodman are crushing in June.
Adell: .273/.368/.818, 6 HR, 1 SB, 26% K%, 2.6% BB%
Goodman: .417/.432/1.000, 4 HR, 24% K%, 2.7% BB%
Both guys are aggressive swingers, and they swing hard. And any time you have that, you’ll have a streaky hitter. Both are on the positive side of the streakiness right now.
Goodman has been pretty great this year, all things considered:
.289/.333/.512, 11 HR, 25% K%, 5.3% BB%, .329 xwOBA
He’s pretty close to a must-own guy at the catcher position.
Alek Thomas also shows up here. He’s hitting .355/.375/.581 in June with two homers and a steal. He’s not much of a home run guy, so you shouldn’t expect much of that. But he has been a high steals player in his career. So if he’s playing every day and getting balls in play, good things can happen for fantasy purposes. And he is sporting an elevated 9% Brl% and 104.2 EV90 this year, so there’s some power here as well.
Remember that insane hot start from Jorge Polanco? What was that about? The guy has been insanely awful since mid-May. His moving wOBA and xwOBA chart is wild to look at.
I’m guessing most have dropped him by now, but yeah - go ahead. He’s hitting .183/.230/.232 with one homer in the last month.
Likewise, Tommy Edman’s hot start to the year has fizzled out. He’s at .247/.273/.356 with one homer in the last month (77 PAs).
Same for Geraldo Perdomo. He’s at .213/.305/.315 with one homer in the last month (105 PA).
Steven Kwan has also been bad: .237/.308/.338, 1 HR (91 PA).
The same for Nolan Arenado: .208/.228/.354 (100 PA).
And what’s going on with Fernando Tatis! He’s at .172/.274/.293 with three homers over the last month. He was looking like a threat to be the #1 overall player early on.
His xwOBA by month:
→ March .497 (22 PA)
→ April .420 (104 PA)
→ May .273 (112 PA)
→ June .292 (44 PA)
There’s nothing you can do with the guy, besides maybe try to buy low!
And that will wrap things up for today’s daily notes. We’ll get some kind of slate preview out before noon, but it’s a pretty light slate of games today so I don’t think there will be much DFS talk. But we have to hit day two of the $25 to $250 challenge, because that has gotten me excited.

Great work, as always. Which beach? I’m from Jersey and grew up going to the Jersey shore and then taking my kids. Now it’s a yearly right of passage. Enjoy this time with them, my friend. They grow up fast.
