I’m back at home, baby! And it’s Father’s Day! What a rough spot my wife is in getting back from a two-week vacation every year, just to get hit with Father’s Day that very next morning. Good thing I am a very low-maintenance guy.
The broader culture probably undervalues fathers these days. I think that’s pretty clear. Seems like every family in TV shows since the 90s goes out of their way to make the dad look like an impotent dummy. Just another classic over-correction in the culture since all of the changes of the 60-70s.
The good news is that none of that stuff needs to bother us. It all probably does have some negative implications on the culture. If the role of a father isn’t held high, then fewer younger men will aspire to it. And the stats are striking about what happens when a boy grows up in a fatherless home. It’s one of the biggest disadvantages you can have in this life. The thing I’m most proud of in my life is my three kids and how well-behaved, smart, caring, and fun they are. I’m not going anywhere!
At the same time, mothers are more important. I’m not the type of guy to go out of my way to bow down to some other person or group of people so I can try to look like a #GoodPerson, I’m just telling the truth here.
Kids need both a mother and a father, no doubt about it. But if you’re forced to take one of them away, I think the choice is pretty clear - you keep the mom around.
So to all of the involved dads out there - shout out to you.
The big name of the day was Spencer Strider. He woke up.

It was against the Rockies, so a bit of a grain of salt. But the velo came back!

He’s still not at 2023 velo, but 96.2 is a lot better. The slider velo was up as well, and that is pretty important for Strider.
I suppose you should be starting him with confidence next time out. The velo coming back and that ball rate dropping really give me a lot of #belief.
Mike Burrows has been decent for the Pirates as of late.
5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 8 K, 0 BB
That was yesterday against the Cubs. He’s up to a solid 18% K-BB% for the year, and it’s 28% over the last three starts.
He has a 2.01 JA ERA in these last three starts with a 16.1% SwStr% and a 35.9% Ball%
The fastball velo is nothing special, but it’s well above that 92-93 range where you’re very concerned. He’s thrown it for a bunch of strikes and has an above-average 10.2% SwStr% on it. That sets up his slider and changeup well. His changeup is devastating with a 31.6% SwStr% on the season. That’s the second-highest in baseball behind Griffin Jax.
Pirates might have something here with Burrows. He had a 31.5% K% and 8% BB% in the minors before getting called up. Great deeper league target.
Hunter Brown struck out 12 in a seven-inning outing. So I don’t want to completely breeze past that. But I don’t have much time here this morning!
We talked about Jacob Lopez after his last start, and we need to mention him again now. He blanked the Royals for six beautiful innings.
6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 9 K, 1 BB
He now has a 29% K% with a 9.4% BB% in five starts. That’s just about a 20% K-BB%, so you know what that means, I think.
His JA ERA is down to 2.64. The 12.7% SwStr% isn’t anything special and his 38.9% Ball% is bad. He’s not checking every box. And his fastball velocity is very low. So there’s not a ton of stuff supporting this 20% K-BB% to me. But you can see the bad luck with the .347 BABIP and 16% HR/FB. He should certainly be owned in deep leagues where you’re struggling to find pitchers. And I bet you can get him pretty cheap right now.
