I am even more back than I was yesterday. My fingers are tickling the mechanical keyboard again. I almost brought this thing on vacation, but decided it wasn’t worth the risk of breaking during the trip, so I just took a different keyboard. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, it’s true. I missed this thing.
And now we’re full-on summer mode here. My daughter has her first real summer vacation, having completed a full-time year at kindergarten. It’s hot out, my sprinklers are running nightly, and we will be spending a lot of time over at my in-laws pool. Having a pool is super clutch when you have kids in the summer. Gets you outside, gives you something to do, gets them good exercise, and tires them out so they go to bed real easy. And then I have the extra benefit of the pool not being mine. So I don’t have to pay for it or do any of the upkeep on it. It’s just the perfect life I have out here, and I’m very happy about it. It should be a fun summer.
Today is Shohei Ohtani day. He will make the start for the Dodgers. I have had Ohtani since 2021 in the home league (keeper league). And that league is on ESPN with daily changes, which makes Ohtani unarguably the most valuable fantasy player in baseball history when he’s both hitting and pitching. So I’m excited to have him back as a pitcher. That said, there’s no way you start him as a pitcher this week. It will probably take him 4-5 outings to get to 90+ pitches, and who knows if the guy can even still pitch. It’s been a long, long time.
Let’s remind ourselves of his pitching stats.
He was one of the best in the game in 2022, and pretty strong in 2023 as well, although he had a bit of a walk issue. So he had the elbow procedure and then missed nearly two seasons. He’s 30 years old, which can’t help things. It would not be surprising at all to see him have very little command tonight and have a pretty rough outing. But it will be fun to have him back playing both sides. And I will probably be even awake for it!
My kids are sleeping really well now. Very rarely does anybody wake up before 7 am, so I’m getting freaking bold. I stayed up until 11 last night. And I’m going to do it again tonight so we can watch this Pacers game. That’s right. 11 pm.
Grant Holmes was the man of the day, striking out 15 Rockies in 6.1 innings. The Rockies have struck out 35 times in their last two games against these Braves.
It’s such a silly matchup. The Rockies are so bad.
10+ Strikeout Games Allowed
9: Rockies
8: Angels
6: Tigers, Red Sox
4: Reds, Athletics, Orioles, Rangers
With that outing, Holmes brought his season K% up to 28%. It was 25.4% prior to that outing. That’s a huge change.
Holmes has not exactly been consistent this year, and his season-long ERA sits at 3.97. That’s not very good. But the JA ERA is at 3.14 with an almost 18% K-BB% now. He’s had some bad luck on fly balls (25% HR/FB), but good luck when the ball stays in the yard (.254 BABIP).
This was his fourth start with at least nine strikeouts since May began. Let’s check on what he’s done since May:
9 GS, 31.4% K%, 8.1% BB%, 16% SwStr%, 34.9% Ball%, 2.47 JA ERA, 1.92 WHIP+
That’s pretty great stuff. Holmes is close to a must-start guy, I would say. Maybe not in a ten-team league, but with all of the injuries and trouble we’ve had finding SPs, Holmes is someone I’d like to have.
Ten strikeouts for Yusei Kikuchi.
5.2 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 10 K, 2 BB, 19.6% SwStr%, 30.4% Ball%
Is he getting going? I don’t know. His last three:
26.7% K%, 10.7% BB%, 11.9% SwStr%, 36.9% Ball%, 3.38 JA ERA
Nothing super special besides the K% there, and the SwStr% doesn’t match it.
He went heavy fastball yesterday, and it worked despite a high 41% Ball% on the pitch. The slider just hasn’t been very good this year with a low 10.4% SwStr% and bad .409 xwOBA. And those numbers aren’t any better if you just look recently. Kikuchi has never been a guy that can dominate with just a fastball. He needs more than that, so it’s pretty damning for him to lose the slider which was the biggest difference-maker for him last year when he was so good down the stretch with the Astros.
We might be seeing a move away from the slider.
Even if we are, that doesn’t necessarily mean things will get any better. And they could get worse. Who knows. Kikuchi is a tough case. But if you have him in a 14-team league or something like that, it’s tough to let go of him, and these last few starts have been encouraging.
Let’s take a look at Brandon Walter. He’s an Astros starter who had a very good outing yesterday.
6.2 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 9 K, 0 BB, 17.5% SwStr%, 27.8% Ball%
Elite numbers! That was his second MLB start. So let’s take a full look. His season in AAA:
7 GS, 47.2 IP, 2.08 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, 27.5% K%, 3.9% BB%
Excellent. And that will get you a promotion to the Majors, especially for a team that is struggling a bit in the rotation. He’s made three starts in the Major Leagues now:
We love that 2.11 JA ERA and that 30% Ball%. The 12% SwStr% isn’t exactly what we want, but that can work if the Ball% is really going to be that low. And he sprinkles in the 52% GB% with it. This is pretty exciting stuff.
But then we see the lack of velocity. His primary pitch is an 88mph cutter. That’s really uncommon to see in the Majors. It doesn’t mean it absolutely can’t work, and the pitch has worked great so far (60% Strike%). But it makes me doubt that he’ll truly be a good strikeout pitcher.
Next up for the guy is the Angels on the 21st (probably), so I’d say we can add him for this week. There are a lot of positives, and that’s a great matchup.
The big stuff going on in sports this weekend was the US Open at Oakmont and the Rafael Devers trade. I actually watched a good bit of the golf yesterday. I usually don’t care, but when it’s at Oakmont we tend to care a bit more since I grew up right around there. The town I grew up in is adjacent to Oakmont. Back in 2018, my wife and I actually put in an offer on a house in Oakmont. But we didn’t get it and then we stopped looking and ended up out here. So I was close to living just a mile or so away from that golf course. And my wife lived in Oakmont when we were dating, so I spent a lot of time there. But I guess it wasn’t enough to get me a VIP invite to the tournament, which is a little disappointing.
So I got into looking at some golf data. I wanted to know what the average score was for each hole during the tournament. And I couldn’t freaking find it. I really wanted to know what the expectation was for the last few holes there. Was there one that was basically impossible to gain a stroke on, stuff like that. I’m sure it’s out there somewhere, but I came up empty. It did make me start thinking about expanding into golf data. That could be really fun and probably pretty profitable. I know there’s some big gambling and DFS playing in the golf world.
But I would have to go to school. I don’t know anything about the advanced golf metrics and stuff. But I’m sure it’s possible, and I’m sure I could build something pretty cool if I had a year or two to start it and refine it. It’s not going to happen, though. At least not any time soon. But I could see myself like 5-10 years down the road just doing sports stuff full time and expanding into basketball, football, and golf. We’ll see. Lots of possibilities.
As for my commentary on the Devers trade. I have nothing interesting to add. It was a wild occurrence to see a trade like that in June. And the return was not impressive. But this was clearly a salary dump for Boston on a guy they weren’t getting along with. I suppose the Giants just made an offer on the contract situation that they could not refuse. Funny enough, Devers goes right into another situation where his team has a much better defensive third baseman than he is. Matt Chapman is on IL right now, and maybe he’s more hurt than they’ve led on. But eventually, they’ll have to make a decision there, and the obvious choice is to send Devers right back to DH.
It’s a park downgrade for Devers. But it shouldn’t make a big difference. He’ll also get to face the Rockies more. So that helps.
Brayan Bello went cutter-crazy yesterday. That pitch showed up for the first time on May 23rd.
He threw it 38 times yesterday. He had previously thrown it 10, 9, and 3 times. And he didn’t discriminate. He threw it to both lefties and righties. The pitch put up a 10.5% SwStr%, a 61% Strike%, a 32% Ball% , and a .177 xwOBA.
Since the pitches debut, it has an 8.3% SwStr%, a 53% Strike%, and a 32% Ball% with a 56% GB%. Those are good marks overall. It’s hard to say this isn’t a very good thing for Bello. That’s mostly because he has not been good in his big league career yet. So any change is a good idea, or at least a good idea to try.
There must have been a boost in confidence in the pitch yesterday to lead to that elevated usage. Bello is back on our radar now, I would say.
He’ll make a start in that suddenly very intriguing Red Sox at Giants series coming up this weekend.
Noah Cameron pitched again yesterday and got right back to business.
5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 7 SO, 1 BB, 15.7% SwStr%, 55.4% Strike%, 31.3% Ball%
This was a truly good start for him. His second best of the year according to the SP Start Grades.
The season update now:
The main numbers are still mediocre.
→ 19.6% K%
→ 7.4% BB%
→ 12.6% SwStr%
→ 35.4% Ball%
→ 3.94 JA ERA
The fastball sucks (3.1% SwStr%, 31% Strike%). I mean a 31% Strike% on a four-seamer is practically a death sentence. But it was way better yesterday (46.7%), although that number still isn’t good. I’m sure he’ll get that into the 40s before long, but it’s pretty clear that he should look for another mode of attack.
Everything else is pretty good. But it’s really, really tough to have consistent success in the Majors without at least a decent fastball near the top of your pitch mix. I feel like I write that sentence once a week, but I’ll keep doing it.
Speaking of guys with everything but a good fastball, Cade Povich earned the win in the bulk role yesterday. He threw just 57 pitches. So the Orioles made a change there. Little bit strange there. We highlighted him last week in the buy-low SP article. But I guess the Orioles didn’t read it. He got his JA ERA down to 3.40 yesterday and now has a 16.2% K-BB%. He’s a better than average pitcher under the hood. But that doesn’t always mean it will turn into good results. His four-seamer has a 49% Strike%, which is an improvement from last year, but it’s been hit very hard (.461 xwOBA).
He threw just 57 pitches, which was the most discouraging thing. Maybe it was just a one-off thing, or maybe they’re just kind of giving up on him as a true starter for this year. I think that would be foolish given the state of the Orioles right now. But who knows. Teams do weird stuff sometimes. And they have more information than us.
Same is true for Sawyer Gipson-Long who was once again restrained. He threw 55 pitches to get through three innings. And he wasn’t good either.
I just wish I knew what the hell that first outing was about when he started and threw 70 pitches just to follow it up with two outings under 60 pitches. Why did they do that?
Eury Perez wasn’t good. He got four whiffs and no strikeouts on 79 pitches. He threw 79 pitches, which came up from 70 in that first outing. So the pitch count stuff is decent with him. But the early performanec indicators are not encouraging.
I would not be comfortable starting him right now, but obviously he’s a guy to hold to tightly in dynasty leagues.
Alright it’s 10:30 and I’ve gotta get moving on some other stuff. Thanks for reading!
