Reader Questions
From Cam: Logan Gilbert underperforming
From Jack: Freddy Peralta. I know he's been good historically but he's made me uncomfortable for about the past month
The human brain is a funny thing. We tend to not have very good memories! We have all these memories in our heads of stuff that happened in our childhoods, and almost surely most of those memories are pretty far off from what actually happened. I think we can also create false memories of things just from seeing pictures and stuff. I think we probably even way overweight eye-witness testimony in the justice system.
I say this to say that our memories of Freddy Peralta are probably off base.
We’ve seen Peralta do really good things for a significant sample example one time, and even then he over-performed given the 3.66 xFIP. You could argue that he’s never been a convincingly great fantasy pitcher.
This year
46.6% Strike% (average)
36.9% Ball% (average)
24.4% K% (fine)
8.8% BB% (fine)
14.2% SwStr% (very good)
10% Brl% (mediocre)
41% GB% (mediocre)
I’d say he’s more likely to be pretty good moving forward as opposed to being bad, so I think he should be started everywhere. The four-seamer and slider have both gotten great whiff rates, but there’s clear inconsistency and he’s not a ground-ball guy, which we don’t love especially in Milwaukee. I think we’re all still a little bit too high on him given that standout 2021 season, and that’s not really fair to him. He’s good, but not great.
From Eli: Michael Harris ROS Outlook
Let’s just take Harris’s season all together. Take the good with the bad!
22.4% K% (good)
6.9% BB% (fine)
72.1% Cont% (mediocre)
10.8% Brl% (good)
46.7% Hard% (great)
52% GB% (mediocre)
66% Swing Dec% (mediocre)
He’s still pretty “raw”, you could say - although that word kind of makes the assumption that he will develop into a certain kind of player, which not all players do. Maybe he’ll always be a free swinger like he is now. I don’t know. But the point is, he hits the ball hard and is limiting the strikeout - and he’s very fast. That makes him someone worth holding onto and starting and just taking what he gives you - but we’re not going to see the 2022 heights again, at least not this year - he was very lucky last year and that’s hard to replicate. The high ground ball rate and the high chase rate show a guy that you’re going to get bad stretches from, but there will be high highs to go with the low lows.
From Steve: I think the weekly streamer email is really good. Promote the shit out of that. That will be one of my must checks sunday. Id say keep it just as it is. Short and too the point.
Steve - It will keep coming, and yeah it will be short and sweet with very little commentary from me because I shouldn’t be doing computer things on Sundays! Gotta focus in more on my family on weekends… thanks for the kind words!
From Andrew Piazza: Kodai Senga. How to handle the roller coaster starts? Is he a trade candidate?
Senga is firmly in the Blake Snell bin. The walk rate is atrocious, but his stuff is so good that you’ll get some absolutely brilliant outings from him. So it’s going to be a wild, bumpy ride. He’s a guy where you just say “at the end of the year, do I think he’ll have helped my team overall?”. If yes, you plug your nose and start him every time. If no, you ditch him and just don’t look at the box score when he strikes out 12. Personally, I’d try to move him after his next great outing. I’d take what I could get and not look back.
From Mark D: Anything in the data that says I should be concerned about Strider?
I’m landing on the side of buying on Strider pretty hard. He’s been bad recently, but over this stretch (the last month) he still has a 34.5% K% and a 10.1% BB% for oa 24.5% K%-BB%. What has really killed him is a 14.5% Brl% and a 46% FB% - both of those numbers just aren’t going to continue. Maybe he’s not the runaway SP1 we thought he was a month ago, but there’s no way I’d be ranking him outside of the top 3 in my ROS ranks.
From Chris: Nolan Jones COL OF
Good question! I don’t think I’ve said anything about Jones since his promotion, so let’s have a looksie
.333/.380/.591, 16.7% Brl%, 33.8% K%, 68.3% Cont%, 114 max velo
Classic profile! Swings hard and gets it in the air, but misses a ton. He also has decent speed, so he can contribute in steals a bit which helps. He has over-performed so far, and I expect things to come back to earth pretty quick given the strikeout rate. I’d look to bail on him, but I don’t think you need to be dropping him if someone won’t give you what you like.
Okay, I’ve got some work to do, and answering those questions took up all my time. But one quick thing, I’m adding Emmet Sheehan everywhere I can this morning, and I think you should to!
