It looks like Logan Gilbert feels pretty good.
5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 10 K, 1 BB, 25% SwStr%, 58.3% Strike%
He generated 21 whiffs for that ridiculous 25% SwStr% on 84 pitches. Insane stuff. Gilbert has been on another planet this year. He’s now at a 39.7% K% with a 5.1% BB%, a 20.4% SwStr%, a 33.8% Ball%, and a 1.32 JA ERA.
Among qualified SPs (6+ GS), Gilbert is first in SwStr%, K%, K-BB%, JA ERA, and he’s sixth in WHIP+.
Good for him. The Mariners rotation is now once again stellar with Kirby, Gilbert, and Woo leading the charge. And then that Luis Castillo guy isn’t a bad SP4 either.
The projection model has been gassing up Lucas Giolito all year, and it was finally right.
6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 10 K, 1 BB, 19.8% SwStr%
He dominated with the fastball (14.9% SwStr%, 62% Strike%). And when he’s doing that, he’s a tough guy to face with the slider and changeup he has.
Giolito 6/17 Whiffs by Pitch
FF: 7
SL: 5
CH: 4
CU: 2
Is this a sign of a turnaround for Giolito or just a good night? It’s fair to have given him an extended grace period since he was returning from such a long time off.
The 10.6% SwStr% and 36% Ball% he has on the year doesn’t make me think much of him.
But let’s cut that in half and see if anything has improved over his last five starts.
Last night helped a lot, but you still see the numbers being pretty mediocre there in these last five with an 11.5% SwStr% and a 37% Ball%.
If we look at last year and find the SPs with SwStr% below 12% and Ball% above 35%, it’s not a pretty list. It’s too long to show you, but you can just believe me that there aren’t many truly good pitchers on there.
Giolito’s velo was up a bit:
And that was a truly great start. So we’ll keep an eye on the guy.
Ryan Pepiot led the slate in fantasy scoring with his best start of the year.
8 IP, 4 H< 1 R, 11 K, 2 BB, 18.4% SwStr%, 28.6% Ball%
He went right at the Orioles, putting up a 17.4% SwStr% on his four-seamer and a mark of 22% on his changeup.
That brought his season K% up to 23.7% and the JA ERA down to 3.39. Pepiot is a good pitcher. He now has a 21% K-BB% over the last month. So he’s getting it together after a slow start. I’m not saying Pepiot is a top 25 SP, but he’s a top 50 guy for sure and should be started in fantasy leagues.
One note from the dashboard side of things. I’m going to have scrap Stuff+ entirely. I can’t hit the FanGraphs API anymore, and I don’t think it’s worth it at all for me to download data manually daily or weekly. But I know there are people out there with their own Stuff+ models. Two seasons ago I had this kid Drew feeding me his model. He’d run all of the pitches from season through his model and then just drop a CSV file into my Google Drive for me, and from there it would incorporate it into the dashboard. And it was even better because all of the stuff was at the pitch level. So every single pitch would give me a Stuff+, Location+, and Pitching+ number. I could do really cool stuff with it having it in that format.
So if anybody out there has one of these models that you want to share with us, reach out! You’ll get paid a little bit.
And now it’s time to talk, once again, about Ryan Gusto. I was driving the conductor of the hype train on Gusto before a couple of weeks ago, and then I quit because he kept sucking and making me look dumb. But since I shut up about him, he’s had two really good starts. Yesterday:
5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 8 K, 1 BB, 13.8% SwStr%, 32.2% Ball%
These last two:
That’s a 15:2 K:BB! The good matchups helped, no doubt.
But it wasn’t for no reason that I liked the guy. His four-seamer has been insanely good these last two starts with a 16.7% SwStr%, a 64% Strike%, and a 27% Ball%. It’s a good pitch, and that was the main reason I was talking about him earlier.
For the season, the four-seamer has a 14.3% SwStr%, a 54% Strike%, and a 33% Ball%.
That’s the 10th-best SwStr% on a four-seamer (350 pitches minimum):
I suppose the issue is that there’s not a great pitch behind it. He’s had to mix and match a bunch of mediocre to bad secondaries. Nothing is awful, but nothing is really good. So that will hold him back, I suppose. But the fastball foundation matters a lot. At the minimum, Gusto deserves to stay in the Astros rotation. And you can use him as a streamer in good matchups in fantasy leagues.
We should review the Sandy Alcantara vs. Mick Abel matchup. Abel won the battle, grabbing a win in his five solid innings. But the underlying numbers were really bad. A 9.1% SwStr% and a 45.5% Strike%. He let a ton of balls get in play. It worked out in this matchup, but it’s not a good recipe for success in the future.
If you take out that start against the Pirates when he struck out nine, he has a 13.6% K% and a 6.8% BB% on a 9.4% SwStr% with a 4.74 JA ERA. I don’t think Abel is deserving of standard league consideration. Which sucks, because I have him in the home league and everybody on waivers sucks. Damnit!
As for Sandy, it was another positive start overall, I’d say. He immediately gave up a dinger to Trea Turner, and he wasn’t efficient, taking 100 pitches to get through five. But he walked one, had another low Ball%, and got through a tough matchup.
Sandy Alcantara
First 11 Starts: 4.65 JA ERA, 16.9% K%, 12.2% BB%, 9.6% SwStr%, 38.4% Ball%
Last 3 Starts: 3.14 JA ERA, 22.4% K%, 4.5% BB%, 11.8% SwStr%, 31.4% Ball%
If you have him, I’d hold on. If he’s available, I’d add him. I dont’ think he’s going to be anything like a fantasy ace (the K% isn’t going to be there, I don’t think), but he looks a lot more like his former self lately.
Hunter Goodman went yard twice and got the Rockies their 3rd win of the season. He has been a light in the darkness.
He’s been even better on the road, which is weird.
Home: .270/.316/.437, 3 HR
Road: .302/.340/.590, 10 HR
It feels like a “here we go again”. Over the last two years we’ve seen a Rockies bat breakout and then end up as a top 100 pick the following fantasy season. It was Nolan Jones in 2023 and Michael Toglia last year. And we know how both of those cases have turned out. There’s a decent chance we’re heading there with Goodman as well. He is striking out a lot (26% K%, 68% Contact%), and he’s very aggressive at the plate (56% Swing%). That means there are holes in his game. So it’s pretty tough to rely on him for fantasy purposes. There’s some thoughts about maybe him getting traded, but I would doubt that happens. He’s 25 and under team control for a long time, so what would the point be of trading him?
Obviously Goodman is a must-start catcher right now, but beware of drafting him next year, and don’t be afraid to cut ties if he goes on an extended slump here. There’s nothing truly holding his floor up in the profile, I don’t think.
Trea Turner is looking better lately. He appears on this leaderboard:
Over the last 30 days, he leads the league in plate appearances and is hitting .315/.374/.568 with a .373 xwOBA.
That’s great to see. There’s still gas in the tank for Trea Turner, which is good for the Phillies since he’s under contract until 2079.
Nolan Gorman also shows up above. His last 30:
.319/.385/.596, 27% K%, 12% Brl%
His last 15:
.355/.444/.710, 28% K%, 14% BB%, 19% Brl%
He is not going to stop striking out. There’s no doubt about it. Striking out is what Gorman does, and he is true to himself. But at least he’s hitting freaking dingers now with it.
Don’t forget that this is a guy who hit 27 bombs in 464 PAs back in 2023. He has big power. But the league really figured him out in 2023 and sent him packing to the minors.
But he’s improved this year as the Cards have given him pretty consistent run, and you see above that he’s really popping up lately. I don’t think he’s anywhere near a 12-team consideration or anything like that, but for deep leagues and DFS and business - he’s in play.
That’ll wrap it up for today, I’ve gotta get ready for this massive Tuesday slate!
