MLB Daily Notes - June 17th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Need to make this quick on a Saturday.
Pitchers
Emmet Sheehan and Andrew Abbott both threw six scoreless innings despite horrible SwStr% (Sheehan 4.5%, Abbott 4.8%). Sheehan had a 40.4% Strike% which is really bad, and he posted a 13% GB%. I mean those are really, really bad numbers. He did throw the sinker 70% of the time, and that might be a first-start-jitters type of thing, so I guess we can somewhat forgive this but man that’s about as gross of a six-scoreless as you can have.
This gives us a good chance to show the power of the new 2023 Individual Start Data sheet. We can filter to similar starts as Sheehan’s outing with the 4.5% SwStr% and the 40.4% Strike%, it’s not a pretty list:
More to come on Sheehan after the next time he takes the mound
As for Abbott, he now has three starts without allowing a single run, but a miserable 4.2% K-BB%. The 7.2% SwStr% puts him in the territory of Jake Irvin, Adam Wainwright, Luis Cessa, Kyle Hendricks, Madison Bumgarner… need I go on? You’re playing with fire starting these two guys moving forward.
JP Sears was the pitcher of the day with a 21.1% SwStr% and a 51.6% Strike%. He’s back to a strong 18% K-BB% on the year with a 13.2% SwStr% and a 49.6% Strike%. Solid stuff.
Bryan Woo had a good one with a sweet 20.9% SwStr% and 9:0 K:BB. He’s now up to a 16.9% SwStr%, a 56.2% Strike%, and an elite 34% K-BB% in his three starts. He’s looking like one of the better rookie pitchers.
Pitching is a funny thing. I just trashed a dude (Abbott) that has thrown 17 scoreless innings in the Major Leagues to start his career and praised a guy with a 7.29 ERA. But when the K-BB% are separated by almost 30 points, that’s the way she goes! If you can move Abbott for Woo, I’d do it, and I’d probably take something for Sheehan right now in redraft as well.
