MLB Daily Notes - June 18th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Pitcher Review
Yusei Kikuchi ran into some trouble giving up five runs on seven hits, but still had a vey nice 7:0 K:BB and a 55.7% Strike%, so he pitched fine and you should continue to roll him out there with confidence. He has has a 3.80 ERA with a 25.4% K% and 6.4% BB% in 47 starts since last year.
James Paxton had a fantastic start in Coors Field going seven innings and giving up just one run on two hits and striking out eight. That was weird. It was a 51.6% Strike% and 16.5% SwStr%, so he looked like a totally different guy. But for the year he still sits here with a 43% Strike% and 9.1% SwStr%, so it would seem that was just a blip there against an exploitable Rockies lineup, but we’lll see.
Reese Olson shut down the Braves (6 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 8 K, 0 BB). He generated 16 whiffs and used his slider+changeup 48% of the time while the fastball usage came down to 21%. If you haven’t heard me yet, Olson has a really good slider and a good changeup but his fastball is awful. So what that turns into is inconsistency, and we got the good side of inconsistency last night.
4-Seam: 97.5 Pitching+
Slider: 105.4 Pitching+
Changeup: 101.75 Pitching+
Sonny Gray was good in the box score against the Marlins (7.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 4 K, 2 BB), but the 39.3% Strike% and 35.7% Ball% was really bad. He’s still kept the strikeout rate above 30% for the year. The 13.8% SwStr% doesn’t quite support that, but it’s still a high rate so he should be fine. The walks have come up though with a 9.7% BB% in his last seven starts. Gray is very good, but I still would not call him a fantasy ace.
Braxton Garrett had a better start (6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 6 K, 0 BB). He still didn’t get many whiffs (11.8% SwStr%) but the Strike% was great at 52.7%.
Cristopher Sanchez has given us a bumpy ride this year. There’s very little consistency to him anywhere. The full sample shows a 20.3% K%, a 7.4% BB%, and a 46.7% Strike%. Those numbers are pretty mediocre, but he makes up for a lot of it with a 60% GB% and a lack of homers you can hardly believe. He’s made 14 starts and has given up just one home run. That’s a 0.12 HR/9, by far the best rate in the league. He can’t possibly keep it that low, but the 60% GB% does show us that he will post a low HR/9, which helps the ERA quite a bit. So he can be a good asset for ERA and wins, but the WHIP is probably going to hurt you (1.34 so far) and the quality starts will be rare (he’s gotten through six innings in just half of his starts).
Max Fried showed you some of the downside that comes when you rely on soft contact. He walked three batters yesterday and failed to get through six innings. He still only gave up one run on four hits with six strikeouts, so you’ll take it - but the 7.8% SwStr% and 44.7% Strike% weren’t good. We’re not changing anything to Fried and he’s still clearly a top 20 SP, but just another point that he has never been a high strikeout rate pitcher and that has its downsides.
Paul Skenes now leads the league with a 54.7% Strike% and 29.9% K-BB%, praise the Lord. I even Skenes shirts for my wife and I when I was being a city guy in Pittsburgh, which is really unlike me. I have stayed away from jerseys and whatnot just because I don’t want it to seem like I’m that into another guy, you know? And now I’m walking around town yesterday with another man’s name on my back, and worse - I gave my wife a shirt with another man’s last name to wear! What has gotten into me! But don’t worry, this paragraph is mostly in jest (there is some truth to every good joke though), and I guarantee I’m much better at Microsoft Excel than Skenes. Glad he’s a Pirate though Go Bucs.
Hitter Review
Kyle Schwarber led the day with 36 fantasy points, he had two dingers and people are talking about June Schwarber again. Of course, it’s ridiculous to think that any hitter is better in a certain month. If Schwarber could raise his game like this, I don’t think he’d wait for June 1st to do it, but there’s probably something to having two months to get your bearings and the hot temperatures certainly help a fly ball hitter like Schwarber. So let’s indulge this for a moment. Schwarber’s June numbers since 2021:
2021: .280/.362/.760, 1.122 OPS, 16 HR, 7.1 PA/HR
2022: .272/.385/.680, 1.065 OPS, 12 HR, 10.2 PA/HR
2023: .230/.342/.530, .872 OPS, 8 HR, 14.6 PA/HR
2024: .291/.400/.600, 1.000 OPS, 5 HR, 13.0 PA/HR
So he wasn’t anything super special last year, but you can see how ridiculous the 2021 and 2022 were.
Tyler O’Neill had cooled off after that insane start to the year but he had a big game yesterday. His numbers by month:
Apr: 90 PA, .320/.433/.693, 1.127 OPS, 24.4% K%, 14.4% BB%, 9 HR
May: 82 PA, .151/.244/.301, .545 OPS, 43.9% K%, 11.0% BB%, 2 HR
June: 34 PA, .367/.412/.700, 1.112 OPS, 29.4% K%, 8.8% BB%, 3 HR
There was some injury stuff in there so we can forgive a bit of the bad May, but just remember that when a guy comes out of the gate crazy hot in April and performing way above their career numbers, you should expect them to come back to normal rather than assuming they’ve made big changes and will continue the massive breakout season all year.
Heliot Ramos homered again after I told everybody to sell on him. He also struck out twice though and his season K% is now 28.8%. I’m telling you to sell high on him, and if you want to know why, read the notes from yesterday.
Carlos Correa is hitting .511/.538/.787 in his last 52 PAs.
This is certainly just one of those streaks of random variance and he’ll come back to earth, but he’s at least showing us that he’s not done. You might be surprised to hear the guy is just 29 years old. It’s likely that he’s just as close to healthy as he’s been in quite awhile and that’s what he’s having his best season in quite a while with the .878 OPS.
He’s not a top ten fantasy shortstop though, so if you could get that kind of return for him - you should look into doing it.
The shortstop position is super deep. I looked at all of the hitters that have earned at least $10 on my player rater and broke it down by position:
OF: 30
SS: 20
3B: 8
2B: 8
1B: 5
C: 4
So your fantasy team probably has a pretty good shortstop.
One more thing before I hang it up and go do things I should have done yesterday, two big injuries lately have shaken up some lineups.
Mookie Betts is out for awhile, and the first lineup the Dodgers put out after that was:
Ohtani
Smith
Freeman
Hernandez
Pages
Heyward
Rojas
Biggio
Lux
So Ohtani moves up and Smith leap-frogs Freeman. This was against a righty, so it will be a bit different against lefties but probably not the top four, I’d imagine that is their new top four - but we’ll see what happens on the days Will Smith gets sa rest. You could see Pages or someone move way up into the top two.
The other injury was Michael Harris, and that allowed Jarred Kelenic to hit lead-off yesterday. Weird stuff.
Kelenic
Albies
Ozuna
Olson
Riley
Duvall
Murphy
Wall
Laureano
When Adam Duvall, Forrest Wall, and Ramos Laureano all start the same game you know the Braves are having a rough go of it. Some of the numbers on these guys:
Kelenic
188 PA, .273/.314/.438, .751 OPS, 29.8% K%, 5.3% BB%, 6 HR, 8.3% Brl%Laureano
90 PA, .143/.256/.221, .476 OPS, 37.8% K%, 7.8% BB%, 1 HR, 4.5% Brl%
So Kelenic is fine, and should probably be added in deeper fantasy leagues if he’s really going to lead off against righties. Laureano is just a defensive asset at this point, and we haven’t seen much of Wall in the Majors. We do know that Wall will steal bases when he gets on, he has swiped 67 bases between all levels in the last two seasons with a 42% attempt rate. I don’t know if he can get on base against Major League pitching enough for that to play out, but we’ll see. In super deep leagues where you need steals - he could be an option for you, but let’s wait and see if he actually plays more often than not.
That’s it for today!
