Kris Bubic has run into a some trouble. He’s up against it. A real test of his fortitude now. He’s given up 15 hits and eight earned runs in his last two starts with a 9:5 K:BB, scoring just 15 fantasy points in those two. Last night against the Rangers:
5.1 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 6 SO, 1 BB, 0 HR
The good news:
→ 19 whiffs
→ 18.8% SwStr%
→ 32.7% Ball%
→ 0 HR
He gave up a .500 BABIP on a .321 xwOBA. And that’s too bad. I played the guy in my DFS lineup. But that was okay, because half of the world played Taj Bradley last night, so I cashed with ease.
This was his highest BABIP allowed of the year by far.
There have been 53 starts this year where a pitcher has given up 15 balls in play with at least half of them going for a hit (excluding homers). Only seven times have we seen a BABIP above .600, so I can show you those:
This all reminds me of the xwOBA vs. BABIP plot from the main dashboard.
It’s actually a pretty dumb plot, but there it is - you can look at it if you want.
Bubic’s last two:
→ 15.7% SwStr%
→ 46% Strike%
→ 36% Ball%
→ .350 xwOBA
→ 18.4% K%
→ 10.2% BB%
→ 4.24 JA ERA
He has a 16.1% K-BB% and a 3.32 JA ERA over his last five. He’s not been dominant. I think he’ll be fine, the season-long numbers are all still strong, but maybe he’s not truly breaking out to be an SP1 or SP2 in fantasy.
I was wrong, very wrong about Mitchell Parker yesterday. He struck out a season-high (and matched his career high) EIGHT Rockies in a beautiful start.
6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 8 K, 0 BB, 16.7% SwStr%
I gave the Rockies too much credit. I should have known better.
For the season, Parker has been very bad. He has a 17% K%, a 9% BB%, an 11% SwStr%, and a 4.52 JA ERA (4.79 SIERA). But his June numbers look a bit better (21% K%, 6% BB%, 12.8% SwStr%, 3.55 JA ERA). But no, Parker is not a fantasy guy to consider. I just wanted to bring that up to show you that I was dumb for thinking he wouldn’t get many strikeouts last night. No pitcher is bad enough for the Rockies.
It was a great debut from Emmet Sheehan. He’s looking to take one of these rotation vacancies the Dodgers have.
We’re not really going to dive deep into 65 pitches, but we saw him get whiffs and throw strikes, and that’s a good thing to see. I think Sheehan is a good add in all leagues right now just because of the upside he seems to have. He has good fastball velo as well as a slider and changeup behind it. There is potential here. Next up he’ll be in Coors Field.
Ranger Suarez has been elite for the Phillies. He had his best start of the year yesterday and now has five really good starts in a row.
7 IP, 4 H< 1 ER, 8 SO, 2 BB
He’s won five straight starts. He’s a #winner. The season ERA is at 2.20 now with a 1.05 WHIP. And that’s with one start where he gave up seven earnies.
I’m not sure how he does it, but he does it. Must-own starter, obviously. But I don’t think I needed to say that.
I’ve never really been a fan of the guy, but this year I have him in the MLB DW points league, so I’ve opened my mind and changed my heart. That’s just the kind of guy I am.
Two barrels yesterday from
→ Jackson Holliday (0 HR)
→ Jordan Beck (1 HR)
→ Maikel Garcia (1 HR)
→ Nick Castellanos (0 HR)
→ Shohei Ohtani (0 HR)
Holliday has had an interesting season. It doesn’t seem like he’s done very much, but the improvements are there. The K% is down to 24%, the Brl% is up to 10%.
And if we zoom in and just look at what he’s done since May:
.257/.294/.533, 23% K%, 4% BB%, 12.4% Brl%, .345 xwOBA
Nothing bad, nothing great. But that’s more than you could have said for him last year. He has seven steals on a high 21% SB Attempt%. So he should be a decent steals source. But the lack of walks does lower the opportunities. He swings a lot (56%), and pitchers are attacking him because of it. Holliday has seen the highest zone rate in the whole league:
I have never spoken to a professional thrower of baseballs, but I would imagine that the reason you throw a ton of strikes to a guy is because you don’t think they’re going to hurt you too badly. Most of the names on that list aren’t intimidating hitters. The ones that are good hitters are good because they hit a lot of singles. Nobody there has much pop.
Holliday does have above-average pop (105 EV90), so it’s interesting to see him at the top of the list. I went ahead and just got everybody above 500 pitches seen into an Excel file. So… here’s that.
Is Maikel Garcia still hitting? Turns out YES.
.318/.374/.500, 13.6% K%, 8.5 BB%, 6.6% Brl%, .285 xBA, .348 xwOBA
I feel like he’s flown under the radar a bit this year. He has a .340/.379/.532 slash line over the last 103 PAs. He’s not relenting.
And then you add on his 15 steals and you have, pretty much, a fantasy stud.
How about an update on Jordan Beck.
248 PA, .265/.327/.478, 28% K%, 7.3% BB%, 13.9% Brl%, .338 xwOBA
The zone contact is 77%, which is pretty low. He’s going to keep striking out, I think. And I do think there’s something to the elevation thing that just sucks the life out of these guys. How long has it been since we’ve seen a consistently good hitter on the Rockies? Has there been one since 2021?
Here are your 1000+ PA Rockies hitters dating back to 2021.
Beck was in a wicked cold streak prior to his dinger last night. His last 114 PAs before yesterday:
.255/.307/.330, 29% K%, 5% BB%
Okay I guess it’s silly to call a .255 batting average a “wicked cold streak”, but no homers in 114 PAs is awful. You either have to hit homers or like steal 50 bases or else I don’t want any part of you for fantasy purposes. That’s the rule.
Let’s look at the league’s highest stolen base attempt rates (100 PA minimum).
Jose Caballero 66%
Chandler Simpson 58%
Pete Crow-Armstrong 48%
Luis Robert 46%
Leody Taveras 40%
Oneil Cruz 39%
Dylan Crews 39%
Bobby Witt Jr. 37%
Dylan Moore 35%
Michael A Taylor 35%
Caballero can be owned for the steals alone, and a guy like Simpson could do if he were in the Majors. That only applies to roto leagues, of course. But other than those special circumstances, I do not think it wise to start a guy on your fantasy team who isn’t hitting dingers. And by that I mean a guy who isn’t at at least a 15 HR pace.
There are 13 hitters in the league with 200+ PAs and less than three homers. Ordered by PA here:
Your current least lucky hitter in the league is Ben Rice.
He has only two barrels in these last there weeks with a very high 59% GB%. So that’s not good. I’m not saying he’s been elite, but he’s been a ton better than this recent cold streak would have you thinking. And he made a start behind the plate last night. He already has catcher eligibility on some sites, and it won’t be long before he gets there everywhere.
So I think you have to keep holding onto him in most leagues. But if it’s an 8 or 10 team league and you’re set at catcher, then okay, you don’t need Ben Rice. It’s very interesting to see his expected stats. They have not gone down when you compare April with May-June:
Ben Rice
March through April: .288 xBA, .418 xwOBA, 21.2% Brl%, 8 HR
May through June: .304 xBA, .388 xwOBA, 11.5% Brl%, 4 HR
Kind of a tough guy to figure out.
One dude that somebody in Discord brought up the other day is Wenceel Perez. He shows up today in the magic formula qualifiers. And look at the savant page:
He hasn’t qualified in PAs with just 62, but you can see the redness there. His season line:
.316/.355/.702, 16% K%, 18.8% Brl%, 75% Cont%, .320 xBA, .360 xwOBA
So that’s all pretty good! He doesn’t walk (3%) despite a league-average swing (48%). He doesn’t hit the ball super hard (103.4 EV90, 106.3 max). But he does lift it a ton (23% GB%) and pull it (50%).
I would predict that those bars will get less red as he sees more playing time, this seems like a lot of good luck in a small sample size. But there’s something here, and he’s someone to keep an eye on if the Tigers start playing him more.
I wonder if these teams look at savant pages. I imagine they do. But do you think any manager was ever like “hey I’m going to start this guy more this week because his statcast page is super red!!”. Probably!
That’ll do it for today!
