I had been smooth sailing through the last few weeks at my real job. But it all caught up to me this morning. So here it is, 10:40am before I start writing the daily notes. That sadly means these will probably be a bit brief. But we’ll see where my fingers take me.
If anybody out there is willing to just pay me a full time salary above, say $75K plus benefits for my family for doing very minimal work, I will accept your offer and then guarantee a more prompt and full delivery of the daily notes. Let me know.
There wasn’t a ton notable last night to talk about. Let’s hit some SP bullet points.
Bryan Woo: Dominant. 18 whiffs, easy qualbanger, season-high nine strikeouts. That guy is the man.
Patrick Corbin: Classic Corbin giving up nine hits. He’s now given up a league-high 895 hits since 2021. That’s almost 100 more than teh second place guy (Logan Webb at 798). He leads the league in hits allowed pretty much regardless of the data sample you choose. I went back to 2015 and found that he’s still #1 with 1,787 hits allowed. Behind him are Kyle Gibson (1,690), Kevin Gausman (1,591), and Kyle Hendricks (1,514). And that all sounsd like a negative thing, but truly it’s a positive. What a great job by those guys staying in the league. I bet for most big leaguers, that’s the primary goal. Probably for all of them. I’d take a 20 year career with no playoff appearances over like a three year career where I won a World Series. No doubt about it. I really hope Patrick Corbin writes a book someday.
Chad Patrick: A big time 9:1 K:BB on 14 whiffs and a 50.5% Strike%. But he also gave up nine hits and ended up with five earnies on his tab. He even gave up a two-run dingjob to Tommy Pham. That was Pham’s first homer of the year and his first since September 10th of last year. My man had gone 245 PAs without a homer, slashing .207/.269/.248 along the way. The Pirates announcers and supporters have given him a lot of grace because apparently he’s had vision problems. It’s really freaking tough to hit a baseball thrown by a professional pitcher. It’s probably nearly impossible to do without near perfect vision. But … I’m sorry what the hell are we doing giving playing time to a guy who can’t see? Shouldn’t you have sorted that out before giving him one of the league’s 400 or so jobs as a Major League position player? What a disgrace man. The Pirates bro. They’re only going to spend $9 million a year but we’ll go ahead and give a chunk of it to a guy whose eyes don’t work. Great call. If I were in charge, I’d only hire people who have eagle eyes. There’s nothing more important in sports than being able to see. and really, all athleticism is primarily a measure of how well your eyes work. Your eyes get the image, they tell your brain where stuff is, and then your brain moves your body parts based on that information. So if your brain gets bad information from the eyes, it doesn’t matter how good it is at moving your body parts around. You’re smoked. Everybody should go see an eye doctor this week, and think about Tommy Pham when you’re there. Chad Patrick gets the Rockies this weekend, so you should absolutely hold onto him for that start. There was a lot of good in that start last night.
Matthew Liberatore: My most confident player prop of the day lost because of this guy. We bet on him coming up short of six innings. But he went out for seven innings on 85 pitches. He struck out five and walked one while giving up just six hits. Good start for the Lib man.
Eduardo Rodriguez: Ten K’s for the lefty against the White Sox. He’s now up to a 17% K-BB% and down to a 3.29 JA ERA. Underrated! I had plenty of the guy on DFS, and that saved my night.
Bailey Ober: The line: 7 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, 7 K, 0 BB. Seven is a good number, but you don’t really want one of those by the “ER”. Ober has been an absolute disaster. There is talk that he’s not healthy. And it’s hard to disbelieve that. He has an 18% K%, a 12.7% SwStr%, and a 3.92 JA ERA now. The strikeouts have gone away, but the fly balls have not. And that is going to turn into bad results, as it has. I tweeted that you can drop Bailey Ober and it got like 200 likes, which makes no sense. That’s not a good tweet. I get so mad when dumb tweets like that go nuclear but my absolutely brilliant genius tweets about bidets and stuff get no love. My life is really, really hard, man.
Trevor Rogers: Is it 2021 again? Or are the Rangers just pathetic? It’s that second one. He ripped through eight scoreless against Texas. But there were only four strikeouts and eight whiffs. Not very good under the hood. He’s at a .213 BABIP allowed now in his 17 innings with a 3.50 JA ERA on a 15.6% K-BB% and a 45% GB%. He might be a decent streaming option in good matchus, but we need some more information.
Spencer Schwellenbach: Strong result with just two runs allowed in seven innings, but ony four strikeouts and a 5.6% SwStr%. The Mets have lost 9 of their last 10 and the Phillies now lead the NL East. Stupid ass Mets!
Allan Winans: Minor league ERA: 0.50. Major League ERA: 8.31.
Walker Buehler: It’s sad what happened with the guy. You might remember him being the top pitching prospect in baseball back in 2018 or whenver that was. I remember watching his first start with the Dodgers. The guy was ripping 99-100 with ease, and that was super rare at the time from a starter. But multiple surgeries have taken their toll, and he hasn’t been able to make proper adjustments. He has just a 19.6% K% and a 9.3% BB% since last season. That gives him a 10% K-BB% which is not ever going to work.
The thing that really held me back in DFS last night was not having Ronald Acuna Jr. or Elly De La Cruz in the cash lineup. I wrestled with getting Elly in there, but couldn’t fit him. Bad mistake. He scored 31 points with a homer, two runs, three RBI, and three hits. His season line now:
.265/.343/.493, 17 HR, 21 SB
In June:
.333/.422/.750, 7 HR, 4 SB
His stolen base attempt rate is at 33%. That’s after going for 46% in his rookie year and 51% last year. He’s really cooled it on the bases. But he’s on his way to crush his 25-homers from last year. He will likely end up as a 35-35 guy this year, or something around there. The K% is also down to 26% (34% in 2023, 31% last year). He keeps improving.
As for Ronald Acuna Jr, he’s been marvelous.
.396/.504/.698, 8 HR, 2 SB
He stole his third base of the year last night and that made for two in his last four games. The red light has turned green… or at least yellow.
Guy is so freaking good.
One potential free agent hitter to look at for you: Nick Gonzales. He’s been a bright spot for the Pirates. He homered on Opening Day but broke his ankle while doing it. Which is almost funny. But he’s back now and he’s hitting .320/.350/.493 on the year with a 16% K%. There’s not a ton of raw power (101.9 EV90, 107.7 max so far), but he’s very good at hitting line drives, so he’ll pull and backspin a handful of homers. He’s not a huge steals guy (five last year in 389 PAs, none this year), and the team context sucks.
I’m not making a very good case for the guy. He’s a super poor man’s version of Luis Arraez… except it’s Luis Arraez when he was on the Marlins. You’re welcome!
New poddy dropped yesterday IN CASE YOU MISSED IT.
I talked about xwOBA over expectation and a bunch of hitters stemming from that. I also talked about communism and whether or not water should be free. I did that because a big account said that water should be free, and I think that’s wrong. A nice idea, but wrong. And then some dude saw my comments on it and went off on me in like a four-tweet spasm telling me that I can’t be a Christian and also think that people might have to pay for water sometimes. So anyways, you can listen to my thoughts on that, and once you do, you can let me know if you think I’m a horrible evil hypocrite like that guy does.
That is it!
