What an amazing turnaround from Yusei Kikuchi. He struck out a dozen more yesterday. He has 31 strikeouts in his last three outings.
His stats by month:
Elite stuff in June. There hasn’t been a drastic change in the pitch mix, but all of the lines have moved closer together on the pitch usage plot:
The pitch mix from these last three:
Before these last three, he was 38%slider usage and 37% four-seamer. So he’s lowered those and brought the curveball much more into play. Great success!
Richard Fitts is back in the Majors. He was one of the guys I was hyping up a month or so ago. It didn’t go well. He got hurt, was rushed back, made two bad MLB starts and then got sent back to AAA. So he’s been all over the place this year, literally and figuratively.
With Dobbins on the IL, he’s back in the rotation. And I do think he should stay there. He has interesting stuff. He struck out six yesterday but did give up two homers and was limited to four innings, so it wasn’t a great outing. But the underlying stuff was pretty great:
→ 18.1% SwStr%
→ 57.8% Strike%
→ 30.1% Ball%
His fastball recorded a 27% SwStr%, that’s ten whiffs on 37 pitches. And he landed the slider for strikes a ton (58% Strike%). The profile for the season:
Not a good JA ERA with that lower K% and very low GB%. I think he’ll give up some homers and there probably won’t be a ton in the consistency department. But his stuff is interesting. I’d pick him up in deep leagues, I think.
A quick look at the updated Jacob Misiorowski page.
If he’s really going to have a 34% Ball%, he’s going to be elite. He might be elite even without it, but if he can throw strikes, fuhgetaboutit.
The four-seamer has a 52.7% Zone% so far. Te league average on a fastball is 56.8%. So he’s well below the average, but he’s gotten enough chases on it to get a 33% Ball%. I think that’s kind of a bad sign. The BB% is at 11% even with this seemingly good command, so if that Ball% moves up (which I still think it will), he’ll probably get up to a 12% BB% or something, and that’s tough to deal with. Even at 12%, I think he’s must-start just because of the stuff. He’s been insanely hard to hit so far with a .238 xwOBA on 241 pitches. And just by wtaching him throw, you can tell that he’s not going to be giving up many hits. His .158 xBA shows you a bit of that.
For his full season (AAA included), he has given up just 41 hits in 79.1 innings.
That’s 0.517 hits per inning, which is the best in baseball when you combine AAA and MLB.
Joe Boyle is right behind him. That guy has to be finding his way into the Rays’ rotation at some point soon. But I only say that because I picked him up a few days back and am really hoping that he can give my home league pitching staff a little bit of a jolt.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto was on his way to a gem, but a rain delay cut his outing very short.
56 pitches, 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 6 K, 1 BB
That cost us one of the prop bets that was surely going to hit. Guess I should have checked the weather a bit more closely!
Jacob deGrom breezed through seven innings on 89 pitches. He struck out seven and lowered his ERA to 2.08 and his WHIP got down to 0.88. Interestingly, his K% is not all that impressive at 25.9%. But he does have at least six strikeouts in four straight and a 27.6% K% in June. The fastball velo has been creeping up, and these last two starts he’s really let loose:
He’s a better pitcher with the velo. So it’s good to see it up there. But then the stuff we talked about yesterday with Chase Burns starts creeping in. Is he putting extra injury risk on his elbow? Is it worth it? I don’t know. But we don’t need to figure it out, because you’re starting deGrom every time out no matter where the velo is at. He’s great.
But how great is he? If we’re justing greatness by JA ERA, his 2.90 JA ERA this year ranks #17 this year. His K-BB% ranks #14. His OPS allowed ranks #5. His WHIP+ ranks #5.
If we were drafting today, I think he’d go somewhere between #5 and #10. Or something like that. But again, this particular conversation doesn’t matter too much right now so we can move on.
George Kirby had a good outing in the box score:
6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 SO, 1 BB
But in the indicators:
6 whiffs, 6.7% SwStr%, 44.4% Strike%, 35.6% Ball%
That’s a very high Ball% for the man. His season BB% is now at 5.8%, which is great, but it’s a couple of points worse than what we’ve seen from him in the past. I don’t know if he’s lost a little bit of that pristine command, or maybe this is part of the thing we’ve seen where the league walk rate has gone up, or maybe he’s just made a slight approach change.
Kirby doesn’t look like an SP1 in his seven starts this year. He’s at a 3.22 JA ERA with a 17.5% K-BB%. His sinker has jsut a 5.1% SwStr% and it’s given up four homers.
The good news is that his four-seamer has been elite and the command numbers are still very good (just not to his usual level of eliteness). But it’s another situation where it really doesn’t matter too much. What are you going to do? You’re not going to bench the guy, you just keep rolling him out there and hope for the best.
If you can sell him for an SP1 value return, I do think I would do that.
Zac Gallen is cooked, I think. He’s now at an 11% K-BB% and he hasn’t had a good start since June 3rd.
Zac Gallen K-BB% by Year
2021: 16.8%
2022: 20.3%
2023: 20.4%
2024: 16.4%
2025: 10.9%
I’d probably drop him if I was in a standard league type thing. I’m not saying drop him for Chris Paddack or someone, but if you have a Jacob Lopez type guy available, yeah I’d make that swap. Or you can bail on him for a stash guy like Emmet Sheehan or Joe Boyle, just chasing some upside like that. That makes sense to me.
Speaking of Jacob Lopez:
7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 6 SO, 1 BB, 47.6% Stirke%, 35.9% Ball%
He had a really rough patch in the middle of his season this year, giving up 12 earned runs in six innings between May 29th and June 3rd. But since then:
4 GS, 23 IP, 0.39 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 31.5% K%, 7.6% BB%, 0 HR
He’s not this good, of course. That’s obvious. He is a fly ball pitcher (23% GB% in this elite sample), and that will hurt him eventually especially in this home ballpark. He’s given up a low (but not super super low) 13% HR/FB for the season, but he’s given up zero homers on his last 17 fly balls allowed. To his credit, he hasn’t given up a barrel this entire time (his last four starts). But that’s also not something we can count on him continuing to control, since hitters control most of that.
Ronny Mauricio hit a dinger yesterday, his third of the year in the Majors. His season update:
62 PA, .224/.274/.414, 3 HR, 30.6% K%, 4.8% BB%, 7.7% Brl%, 66% Cont%, 105.1 EV90
He has power, but he’s whiffing a ton. Even in the strike zone, he’s whiffing a ton (69% Z-Contact%).
I don’t think he’s someone who is going to help your fantasy team very much this year, but we should keep an eye on him as a young (24) player with a lot of skills.
Jasson Dominguez had himself a big game, much to the pleasure of my DFS lineups. His season update:
.253/.341/.396, 27.8% K%, 11.9% BB%, 6 HR, 9.3% Brl%, .241 xBA, .334 xwOBA
It’s been up-and-down. I wrote him up a few weeks back as a “breakout” hitter, and that didn’t work out. He hasn’t done much of anything lately after showing those positive signs in the underlying profile.
His last 150 PA:
.272/.358/.416, 24.3% K%, 12.8% BB%, 4 HR, 10.8% Brl%, .255 xBA, .357 xwOBA
Better lately! And you see the OBP there. He’s good at getting on base, that makes him a good target for OBP leagues where you’re looking for an outfielder. He also has steals ability with a dozen steals on a 19% atetmpt rate.
Dominguez has a huge fantasy ceiling. He runs fast, hits the ball hard, and he’s doing all of this while still being only 12 years old. Will it all come together this year? Maybe, but probably not. He’ll be a guy I’m pretty interested in next year, I think.
And that’s where we have to start. We have nine games on the board today, and eight of them are afternoon games, so I’ve gotta get cracking on the slate preview! Hope you’re all enjoying the daily notes. Even with all of the other stuff I’ve added on here, this is still the heart of the whole ordeal.
