I’m at a hotel with the family, so I think these notes will be pretty brief.
Sonny Gray had an absolutely ridiculous outing. Complete game shutout with one hit and an 11:0 K:BB. I got a list of all complete game shutouts with at least a 10:0 K:BB since 2021, here they are:
And then if you want to also include the single hit thing, he’s in even more elite company:
It’s not a shock to see Sonny Gray have a big outing. But he probably wouldn’t have been the one you would’ve guessed to do that last night. He’s been very much up-and-down this year, but this was a massive UP.
My calculations of fantasy points don’t include the bonuses for complete games and shutouts, so if you’ve noticed that Sonny Gray actually scored 50+ points on DraftKings last night, that’s why.
Gray is another one of those guys with elite secondaries (breaking balls / offspeed) but not a good fastball. And that turns into what you see above. Some insanely good outings, but very little consistency in delivering them.
His JA ERA is at 2.66. It was at 2.88 before yesterday. So this helped a lot, but it was still quite good beforehand.
Just another K-BB% above 20% for the guy, but you can see how bad that fastball is (49% Strike%, .457 xwOBA). He is really dependent on being ahead of hitters so they can’t sit on that heater.
If you can suddenly sell super high on Gray after that gem, I’d do it.
Dylan Cease led the night in whiffs with 20. His 21.5% SwStr% was ridiculously good. It was another fantastic night for Cease in that arena. He’s one of the most reliable pitchers in the league if you’re just looking for whiffs and strikeouts (he punched out eight in four innings). But the problem is what happens when he doesn’t strike the guy out.
He walked three, gave up two homers, and it took him 93 pitches to get 12 outs.
For the year, the walk stuff isn’t a huge issue. He’s at an 8.6% BB% with a 36.4% Ball%. Both of those numbers are around league average and play just fine with his 29.3% K% and 17.1% SwStr%.
But he’s been unable to put everything together most times out. He has just four starts above 25 fantasy points (that’s about what you hope for with a fantasy ace), and he has a 4.53 ERA and 1.32 WHIP on the year. The strikeouts (117) have been great, but nothing else has helped your team.
I will continue to view Cease as a buy-low. And maybe there’s no better time to try it than right now. You could dive deep into his pitches and the tape and all of that and maybe come up with some explanation about why he hasn’t gotten results and why he’ll continue to fail to do so. Or you could just look at the full list of SPs with 12+ starts and a K-BB% above 20% and sort by ERA descending and decide that you want to buy-low on Cease right now and think no more about it.
The group ERA for SPs above a 20% K-BB% is 2.69. Cease is at 4.53. This would usually be explained by a super high HR/9, but even that isn’t the case with Cease at just 0.99 HR/9.
He’s #17 in baseball with a 3.34 SIERA. His 68% LOB% ranks 10th-worst, and his .330 BABIP is fourth-highest. He is going to get way, way better results in the second half, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he’s a top-ten arm the rest of the way home.
BABIP above .320:
LOB% under 70%:
Sawyer Gipson-Long was allowed to make a traditional start for the Tigers yesterday. He threw 77 pitches, which was a step in the right direction. He wasn’t great, though:
5.1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 5 SO, 2BB
The good news:
15.6% SwStr%, 36.4% Ball%
He’s now at a 3.61 JA ERA on a 15.5% K-BB% with an 11.5% SwStr% with an elite 28.7% Ball%.
The secondaries are terrific, but the fastball hasn’t been good at all for him with a huge .508 xwOBA allowed.
The fastball isn’t fast, but remember that this guy has elite extension and that makes the fastball play up. There’s a lot of bad fortune in that .508 xwOBA. That number will come down, and he’ll improve overall because of it. You can see how good his changeup and slider are. So I quite like the future possibilites for Gipson-Long. He’s not interesting enough to justify a fantasy spot if he’s being used as like a 50-pitch bulk guy, but if he’s getting back into the rotation as a traditional guy and pushing to 80+ pitches, I’d like him on my deeper league teams. Lots of potential there, LOTS.
This Brandon Walter guy is very interesting. He took care of the Cubs last night
6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 5 SO, 1 BB
He now sports a 24.6% K%, a 1.6% BB%, and a 3.34 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP in his 29.2 MLB innings. This was after putting up sick numbers in AAA:
47.2 IP, 27.5% K%, 3.9% BB%, 0.57 HR/9
So he’s not walking hardly anyone. His 30.9% Ball% in the MLB is elite (fourth-best behind Skubal, Greene, and Steele), and he’s been above-average with a 12.6% SwStr%. That’s a pretty good combination, and obviously we love the early signs the 23% K-BB% are showing. But what about the stuff?
He’s a craftsman! And who knows, maybe this will be the new thing. All of these 99mph heater guys end up under the knife, maybe it’ll become way cooler to throw 91 again. Kinda like how cell phones started really big, got really small, and are now getting bigger again.
I remember this one phone that LG made called THE JUKE. It was so dumb. Here it was:
It’s a blurry picture, but it would be inappropriate to have a clear picture of it. Pictures of anything prior to 2015 should be blurry. So phones went from the size of a watermelon to that insane thing and now they’re all pretty big again. I mean they aren’t watermelons, but you get it.
But no, I don’t think MLB is going back to promoting 90-92mph fastballs. The teams are just going to squeeze whatever they can out of these fireballers and try to just develop enough of them so they have backup plans. But it would be a nice story for some guys like Brandon Walter to have really long, successful careers. There is something beautiful about the art of pitching when you’re doing it without a ton of raw velo. I mean I guess that’s when it actually becomes an art, right? Throwing 101 down the pipe is effective, but not artistic.
And yeah, of course, this guy is left-handed.
As soon as we get home from this trip, I’m taking my two boys out to the back yard and making them throw 1000 wiffle balls with their left hand. What an advantage. There are plenty of downsides to being left-handed too, though. They’d be uncomfortable in those school desks and they wouldn’t be allowed to play shortstop. I mean I suppose if they were good enough, their Little League coach would let them play shortstop. But not if I were their Little League coach, which I probably will be. Rules are rules bro! The middle infield and hot corner are only for right-handed people. It’s God’s creation, not mine.
Brandon Walter is a lot like Jacob Lopez, though. And they’re both pretty intriguing, and I think they should be rostered in most leagues. Although I don’t believe they’ll keep these hot starts up, we’re deep enough into the season to start believing enough to add them.
My guy Stu hit 3 of 4 props yesterday in Projection-Powered Props. But I might have to fire him because he fell for the Jose Soriano thing. I liked his other plays, but I was shaking my head a little bit when I saw that one. We should know better than to believe in Soriano like that! His lack of strikeouts and erratic command are going to turn into bad outings at least once a month. He was coming off of three elite starts in a row, so it was no surprise that it crashed and burned so, so hard.
He’s at a 3.99 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP now. Both of those are bad, but most of the damage has come in just a few spots. He’s had plenty of starts that you were pumped about having on your fantasy team.
The problem is that you can’t even play the matchups with him. His bad starts have been against the Red Sox, Pirates, Nationals, Marlins, and Rangers. His best starts against the Athletics, Astros, White Sox, Yankees, Rays, and Padres.
There’s just no telling what he’ll do next!
Pretty good stuff from David Festa last night.
5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 6 SO, 0 BB
His big league JA ERA is now at 3.92. Not great. The walks and homers are an issue. I don’t think you really want to start him, but I will have one eye permanently glued on him.
That’s it for the Saturday daily notes. I’ve gotta get going. I’m not invited to the baby shower, so I’m taking the boys to my parents house. I don’t think you needed to know that, but now you do.
