Pitcher Review
Ryan Weathers had another weird start, he has done that a couple of times where he looks totally dominant for a minute and then goes back to crappiness. But everything is going the right direction lately. For the year: 22% K%, 6.6% BB%, 12.4% SwStr%, 36.5% Ball%. Last year three starts: 34% K%, 5.2% BB%, 17.1% SwStr%, 36.3% Ball%. He’s good enoughf or 14-team leagues or deeper and maybe he’s figured something out lately, but more likely is that he’s pretty mediocre on a bad team and isn’t worth a ton in fantasy.
Garrett Crochet added eight strikeouts to his tally with 19 more whiffs.
Bryce Miller went for a 9:1 K:BB in six scoreless innings. The pitch mix on him for the year is shown below. The fastball is just so good with the 53% strike%, and the presence of the sinker is good to see even though it’s kinda bad, the new splitter is working well enough as well, although it’s not the most impressive splitter in the world.
Ten strikeouts for Sean Manaea, that brought his season K-BB% to 13.6%, which isn’t the worst thing in the world but he’s just not a guy to trust ever for fantasy purposes.
Chris Sale had one of the worst starts of his career, and against the Athletics no less. He gave up eight run on nine hits. The SwStr% wasn’t there at 11%. Definitely some BABIP stuff there giving up nine hits, but two of them were homers - and the A’s can still do that to you. The key to facing the Athletics is just to avoid total bad luck and don’t give up multiple homers. No reason for having more concern than you already did on Sale. There still should be some given the injury history, but there shouldn’t be any about his performance while healthy. The fastball velo was down a little bit yesterday but nothing out of the ordinary range.
Taj Bradley got bombed by the Orioles, that will happen when you don’t locate pitches, and he didn’t locate pitches (three walks, 41.8% Strike%).
Robert Gasser went back to the pitch-to-contact route giving up seven hits in five innings with three runs allowed and just three strikeouts. He didn’t walk anybody though and lowered his MLB BB% to an astounding 0.9%. That’s one walk in 114 batters faced, but just 16 strikeouts along with it (14%). It’s not the worst thing in the world to allow balls in play as long as you aren’t putting on anybody for free and avoiding homers, but I don’t think he’s a 12-teamer right now. Just not enough strikeout ability, the ERA and WHIP will probably not settle into good places even with the lack of walks.
Kyle Bradish got bombed for five runs on seven hits, striking out six and walking three in 2.2 innings.
Big Sunday ahead, I will be back later with the look ahead to next week.
