Okay, what did I miss? I was unable to pay attention to baseball pretty much all weekend. So let’s catch up… let’s catch up, together. Here are the top pitching performances of the weekend:
Not a whole lot to dive into there besides maybe Quinn Priester. I suspect that was the best start of his career, but it hardly moves the needle since these Rockies matchups are so skewed.
To Priesters credit,t hough, it was teh second-best start of the year coming against the Rockies. That’s if you judge it by DraftKings points scored.
Highest DK Scores vs. COL
Spencer Strider (6/14): 41.1
Quinn Priester (65/28): 39.9
Merrill Kelly (5/18): 39.4
Michael King (4/13): 38.4
Grant Holmes (6/1): 37.8)
The Rockies have ceded 25 or more DraftKings points to their opposing starting pitcher 25 times this year. That leads the league.
25+ Point Starts Allowed
Rockies 25
Angels 20
Rangers 19
White Sox 17

That start doesn’t stand completely alone for Priester. He’s been pretty good since May 24th when he had a very nice outing against the Pirates. His log since that day:
That is a 2.06 ERA with a 0.99 WHIP on a 23.2% K% and a 3.9% BB% in 39.1 innings. Take out those 11 Rockies strikeouts and you have a 19.2% K%, so it’s not like he was truly looking great before that. But let’s give him credit for that start and look at more numbers from this stretch.
→ 12.4% SwStr%
→ 48.2% Strike%
→ 33.1% Ball%
→ 2.53 JA ERA
→ 1.41 WHIP+
→ .582 OPS allowed
→ .272 xwOBA
→ 62% GB%
He is a guy with heavy sinker (94-95 at 40% usage), so he does have the ability to get a bunch of ground balls and have success that way. He was held by a very high walk rate early in the year, but he’s cleaned that up nicely with a 4.7% BB% over his last 49.2 innings.
It is possible that the Brewers and Priester have figured something out. He’s going to continue to lean on this heavy sinker, and as long as he can locate it and keep it down in the strike zone, it can work.
The slider has a solid 18.1% SwStr% since May 24th, so he does have something to put guys away with.
That pitch hasn’t been consistent for him in his career, so I have my doubts about it. I’m tipping the cap to Priester for the improvements we’ve seen, but I’m not rushing out to grab him in any leagues.
For guys like Priester, I have been quickly looking at their next couple of matchups in situations like this. And I realized that I don’t have a really good strength of upcoming schedule grading tool this year. And that’s a mistake. I mean what is a fantasy baseball newsletter without a script that cycles through the next ten days of probable pitchers and grades each guys’ schedule? Bush league.
So that’s been developed and added to the Probable Pitchers - Next 10 Days Google sheet. It’s on a new tab called Upcoming SOS. The higher the “Score”, the better the matchups. It’s normalized on a scale where 100 is an average strength of schedule.
I use season long OPS, season long xwOBA, last 30 days OPS, and last 30 days xwOBA to grade each team. So it’s a bit dynamic. If the Rockies suddenly start scoring 12 runs a game for the next couple of weeks, for example, you’ll see their matchup score change.
I was surprised to see how much the script liked matchups against Cleveland. But maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised about that. Cleveland has the fourth-lowest OPS in the league this year (.659), and they are dead last in the last 30 days (.617).
The worst upcoming schedules:
That will update every morning, and the link to it is in the Resource Glossary for paid subscribers (called Upcoming Probable Pitchers and Streamers)
The Pirates beat the Mets three times while I was in Pittsburgh. That was unexpected. The Mets have been awful lately with a -20 run differential over the last 30 days.
Mike Burrows got the best of them yesterday and continued to make his case to stay as a fixture in the Pirates rotation.
That’s a solid 17% K-BB% and 3.33 JA ERA on the year. He’s had some rough longball luck with that 25% HR/FB). But he is a fly baller, so it’s not surprising that he’d give up some homers. But probably not 1.75 HR/9 like he’s done so far this year.
He had a shorter outing yesterday, going just 4.1 innings, giving up one run on a 5:1 K:BB. That was because he made a quick detour into the bullpen to cover 2.1 innings on the 25th. I’m not sure why they did that, maybe it was needed, I don’t know. But if the Pirates don’t realize that this guy should stay in their rotation then they are freaking dumb. Burrows has a better JA ERA than Mitch Keller (a half of a run better). His mark of 3.33 is well better than the league average for starting pitchers (3.70). He’s kind of good, and he’s worthy of a roster spot in plenty of deeper fantasy leagues
Chad Patrick had that super elite two-start schedule last week. He didn’t truly pass the test, giving up four earned runs in 10 innings and failing to get past five innings in both matchups. But he did rack up the Ks with a 17:1 K:BB in those two spots against the Pirates and Rockies.
Patrick has been sneaky this year, and I’ve been on him for a month or so now. After taking advantage of those matchups to pile up the whiffs, his K% is up to 24.5% and the walk rate is competitive at 7.4%. The JA ERA sits at 3.23. He’s an extreme fly baller (29% GB%), but unlike Burrows he’s been lucky on fly balls at a 12% HR/FB.
He leads his pitch mix with a cutter that has been great with a 14.5% SwStr% and a 50% Strike%. The xwOBA on it in .336, which is a touch high, and it’s almost never getting hit on the ground with a 15% GB%.
He throws almost 90% fastballs (cutters, four-seamers, and sinkers). That makes it tough to believe too much in him as a mid-20’s K% guy, but that’s who he’s been so far. The SwStr% is at 11.6% overall, so I do think this K% is going to end up at 20-22%. But okay, he’s handling himself pretty well overall and he’ll get the Marlins next. I’d start him again this week.
The one thing we picked out with him a few weeks back was that he had been tinkering with his pitch mix, bringing everything closer in usage. He was haevy cutter + four-seamer early on, but over the last four starts he’s been very evenly distributed.
Cutter 31%
Sinker 27%
4-Seam 20%
Slider 16%
Changeup 6%
And since then he has a sick 15.6% SwStr%, 23.7% K-BB%, and a 2.45 JA ERA. However, those two soft matchups (PIT and COL) are half of that sample.
But yeah, start Patrick against the Marlins, and we might even want to hold on after that. There are reasons to believe here.
Tarik Skubal put up a -0.68 JA ERA in that start last night. He is stupid good. Your updated top 25 in JA ERA this year (again, this should basically match SIERA, but it’s way better and cooler because I don’t have to go to FanGraphs to get it).

I got a couple of phone calls during all of the above, so it’s 10:40 now and I’ve gotta start landing this plane.
A couple of hitters to note. Bryan Reynolds is #2 in xwOBA OE over the last 10 days. He’s hitting .244/.309/.453 in June with a very, very high .393 xwOBA, which is +.059 over expectation. I talked about him as a buy-low for the rest of the year, and that does seem wise right now. His expected bar has been above his actual bar for most of the season:
Otto Lopez is #3 on that list. He’s been very successful with the bat ever since getting back from the IL in mid-May.
159 PA, .284/.358/.440, 13% K%, 9% BB%, 6 HR, 104.9 EV90
Sneaky stuff there, man. I added him in the MLB DW points league yesterday. Here’s some 2024 → 2025 comparison:
He’s dropped the K% down four points from an already strong number, and the quality of the contact has shot way up as well (.372 xwOBA). He’s two homers away from matching his 2024 total and he’s done it in 160 fewer PAs.
Two more infielders to consider adding and then I’m out of here.
Nick Gonzalez is now hitting .300/.347/.478 on the year with a 16% K%, a 7% BB%, an 8% Brl%, and a .347 xwOBA. He’s a good source for batting average and some counting stats since he’s near the top of the Pirates lineup. If Oneil Cruz and Bryan Reynolds are both going at the same time, that’s enough to make that top half of the lineup something like league-average, which should lead to Nicky G scoring some runs and whatnot.
The last guy to mention is Luis Rengifo. I’m drawing these names from this section of the notes:
That’s a good thing to check every other day or so, but if I were you I’d do a little bit of a deeper dive into each name before making a decision. You can certainly lucky into a .900 OPS over a two-week sample.
Rengifo in June:
.262/.326/.417, 19.6% K%, 7.6% BB%, 6.1% Brl%, .352 xwOBA
That’s massive improvement from his first two months. He does have just one steal in June and two for the year… but the 12% SB Attempt% should have him stealing more than one bag a month. I could see him being a pretty good roto bat for the rest of the year, we’ve seen that from him multiple times in his career already.
I lied, one more. Dominic Canzone is now slugging .552 in 61 MLB PAs. It’s a tiny little sample size, but even so, he’s one of just a dozen hitters with a .550+ SLG in 50+ PA.
He has a ridonkulous combo of a 16.3% Brl% and a 14.8% K%. He is the only hitter in the league with a 15%+ Brl% and a sub-15% K%. The only one!
Will he stay there? No! Is it a really good sign even in 60 PAs? Yes! A 91% Z-Contact% with a 107.5 EV90! This guy needs to play every day until these numbers go away. But he hasn’t been. He hasn’t made a start against a lefty, and he’s sat twice recently even against righties. My guess is that starting now, he’s in there every time against righties, but I don’t think he’ll be seeing lefties. He hit .237/.274/.406 against lefties in 62 PAs in AAA with a 29% K%. That’s a problem. Against righties he was at .325/.391/.642 with an 18% K%. This could be a Joc Pederson from last year situation where the guy just gives righties nightmares but then gets his ass glued to the bench when a left-handed pitcher appears anywhere.
But that can work in plenty of league types, baby! The Mariners face these PPs (PP lmao!) this week:
So that’s four righties and three lefties. Not advisable to start Canzone in a weekly lock league, but yeah I’d like him in my lineup against Wacha, Lorenzen, Lugo, and Burrows.
That’s it for real this time. I’ll be back this afternoon with a big, beautiful slate preview.
