I want to focus a bit more on some hitters today, but here’s the top of the “Yesterdays SP Data” sheet:
Skenes and Peralta were great, ho-hum.
The pitcher of interest is probably Spencer Strider. He put up a nice 16.5% SwStr% yesterday, but the D’Backs hit him hard, and he again walked a pair and posted a bad ball rate.
The velo is the thing we’re watching, and it’s not getting any better. The fastball has been 95.0 and 95.2 in these last two starts. His slider is at 83.7. Those are both down a bunch from 2023, and it makes a real difference when you make your living on those two pitches.
He has just a 7% SwStr% on the four-seamer. That number was above 15% in 2023. The slider has still be pretty good besides a higher Ball%, but it almost doesn’t matter what the slider does if the fastball is going to be this hittable.
And you’d have to start having doubts about the velo coming back. He had a major elbow surgery with that internal brace thing. It’s possible the velo is gone for good.
Here’s what one of those braces looks like:
I’m no doctor, but I would say that having one of those bad boys in your elbow could definitely change what you’re able to do with the elbow.
In the last couple of years, we have seen this emergence of the two-pitch aces. The high fastball velo with a nasty slider. It can work gloriously when things are going well, but we’ve seen two problems with the approach.
Injuries
Volatility
Jared Jones is a lot like Strider, and we’ve seen both of these guys require major surgery now after spending not that long in the Majors. We’re seeing the second problem with Strider. All of their eggs are in the basket of the velocity. And if you lose even a bit of it, you don’t have anything else to fall back on, and suddenly you’re a pretty mediocre pitcher.
Trent Grisham has come back to earth in a hurry. Since May 13th:
.194/.306/.274, 28% K%, 14% BB%, 1 HR, .214 xBA, .313 xwOBA
For comparison’s sake, here’s what he had done prior to that date:
.288/.373/.663, 19% K%, 11% BB%, 12 HR, .281 xBA, .345 xwOBA
It shouldn’t be surprising to see Grisham’s insane pace not keep up. But since all of the advanced metrics were so good in that first month and a half, I didn’t really think he’d go right back to being the Grisham we had come to know over the years. But I’d hold on for a bit longer if you have him in a deeper league. It’s just a 70 PA sample here that I’m criticizing.
Quick Landen Roupp update:
22.4% K%, 8.1% BB%, 11.9% SwStr%, 3.51 JA ERA, 1.92 WHIP+
The strikeout and walk stuff has been mediocre, but he’s been tough to hit. And that makes sense from a guy leading the pitch mix with a curveball. I just wish the GB% would be 5-10 points higher. If that were the case, I might really be able to believe in him as a standard fantasy league target.
Max Muncy can SEE!
He started wearing these glasses on April 30th. Since then:
.277/.398/.617, 1.015 OPS, 9 HR, 16% K%
That’s the seventh-most homers in the game, and he is second to Rafael Devers in RBI (31). And yet, he’s available in plenty of leagues.
Another guy who is available in a bunch of leagues is Byron Buxton. He’s back from concussion IL and has picked up right where he left off. He has four straight two-hit games since getting back with ten RBI in those four games. For the season:
.274/.316/.508, 10 HR, 10 SB, 31% K%, 5.6% BB%
Still swinging a lot, chasing a lot, and whiffing a lot. There will be some cold spells, but the good outweighs the bad (big time) when he’s healthy. And his stolen base attempt rate is up to 23% - the highest since at least 2019.
So he’s joined the 10-10 club, and has done it in just 196 PAs.
We talked plenty of Ceddanne Rafaela a couple of weeks back while he was popping up all over these daily notes. He didn’t do a whole lot in the short time after that, but he’s on quite a heater right now.
He has this massive gap between his red and green lines on the plot:
That means he’s been pretty unlucky lately, but you can see the red lines movement in the last few days. Since May 1st:
.279 xBA, .354 xwOBA, 13.4% Brl%, 21% K%
Those are strong marks. The results have really started flowing in the last week. Since May 28th:
25 PA, .480/.480/.880, 3 HR, 16% K%
He hit the hardest ball of his career last night, as we see in this section of the notes below:
Ceddanne Rafaela, Yesterday: 112.1 Previous High: 109.1
He’s a better hitter this year, and deserves more attention in fantasy leagues. The biggest change is that he’s chasing less and making more contact in the strike zone.
We needed to see that from him. He was pretty out of control with the bat last year.
Looking at some of these other high chase rate hitters to see who stands out:
I’ve highlighted the fantasy-relevant names. There aren’t many surprises here. Perez, Tovar, Diaz, Chourio, and Harris have always been super aggressive at the plate, and that will turn into a high chase rate. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. Perez has done this his whole career and has been a great hitter. But it does make these players subject to slumps, and it opens up a way of approach for pitchers. There’s not a great reason to throw these guys strikes early in the count.
Addison Barger kept at it with another dinger. He now has a .302 xBA with a .392 xwOBA with six homers and a 21% K% across 134 PAs.
His calling card is exit velo:
But the contact has been nice as well. 75% overall and 82% in the zone. That’s a recipe for success.
He’s homered in four straight games now and has six since May 1st with a .299 batting average.
He’s really smashing righties and struggling a bit against lefties. Maybe pitchers will adjust, and we’ll see him go the way of the Grisham. But there’s no denying the raw power here.
I think it’s pretty clear that Ketel Marte was the right pick at second base this year. There were six second basemen going around the top 100 in drafts. And they’ve all been horrible except for Marte.
Altuve has been coming around lately, but overall, he’s been a bad pick so far. Albies/McLain/Semien have been team wreckers. I think you can drop McLain and Semien in standard leagues. Westburg should return soon, and I’d want to roster him. He had some very poor luck before getting hurt, and we really like the skills he has.
I should give a little love to George Springer. He’s having himself a very nice season.
.254/.366/.469, 8 HR, 7 SB
It’s good to see that he still has some power. He’s not a 30-homer threat anymore, but he will probably make his way to 20-25 homers with 15-20 steals.
How about DREW RASMUSSEN! The last time he gave up an earned run was May 11th. So let’s do that ridiculous thing where we pick a hyper-specific date to make a point.
ERA Leaders Since May 12th
Drew Rasmussen: 0.00 (23 IP)
Landen Roupp: 0.40 (22.1 IP)
Nathan Eovaldi: 0.66 (13.2 IP)
Carlos Rodon: 0.84 (25 IP)
Andrew Abbott: 0.89 (23.2 IP)
Bailey Falter: 0.79 (22.2 IP)
Chris Sale: 0.90 (20 IP)
Kris Bubic: 0.99 (27.1 IP)
Paul Skenes: 1.04 (34.2 IP)
Bryan Woo: 1.38 (26.0 IP)
Rasmussen has allowed a .541 OPS. That’s in the top ten of the league. The problem is, of course, that the Rays have a strict 8:30 bedtime for him.
If he’s sitting on the bench after having thrown at least 70 pitches, he is not allowed to stand up. Drew, thanks for five more totally elite innings that will win us this ballgame, but we’ll take it from here.
It’s really something to behold.
There was a rain delay in last night’s game, which might have affected their decision-making. I don’t know. But who cares, I’ll take a zero ERA in any innings sample, baby!
That’s all the time I have for today. I didn’t go back to that format I did yesterday, as you can tell. That format made it a lot easier for me to write. I really enjoyed it. I didn’t have to think of things to start typing, it just happened naturally from the prompts. But looking at it, man it was ugly and hard to read. The Substack editor doesn’t give me many options for formatting and stuff. It would be really cool to be able to do two columns with the automation on the left and my comments on the right, but that isn’t possible.
So that’s it, have a great Wednesday.
