The Pacers won in spectacular fashion last night, and your boy even stayed up for the whole thing. It was the latest I’ve gone to bed since election night, I think. But they made it worth it.
They led the game for 0.3 seconds and won. SPORTS!
There are a few starting pitchers worthy of attention. Let’s start with Robbie Ray. He and Framber Valdez are on the top of the lists tonight. Both of these guys have been absolutely rolling after slow starts to the year.
April 26th is when Ray really put it together. Since then, he has a 1.70 ERA with a 0.85 WHIP on a 31% K% and a 6.5% BB%. Elite stuff.
He locates that four-seamer very well and then has the slider/changeup duo that is really really tough. He’s used that changeup to post a higher K% to righties (29%) than lefties (26%) this year.
Ray was one of the better picks of fantasy drafts this year.
Valdez is looking the best version of himself this year. He’s one of just six SPs with:
→ K% > 25%
→ BB% < 10%
→ GB% > 50%
And that criterion is pretty lenient since Valdez has a 25% K%, an 8% BB%, and a huge 60% GB%.
The next guy to note is Ryan Pepiot. He had a tough start to the year as well, but now he’s made six straight quality starts and has the ERA down to 3.20 with a 1.13 WHIP. He is a solid MLB pitcher at worst, so it was wise to hold onto him through the early struggles, even though the home run rate is something that is scary with him as a fly baller in that ballpark. The 1.4 HR/9 is high, but he does everything else well enough to compensate for it.
Remember that the league average JA ERA is 3.70 and the league WHIP+ is 1.96. So he’s been about league average overall. Since May, his JA ERA is still kinda crappy at 3.87 but the WHIP+ is at 1.39. So the indicators haven’t changed that much, but he’s gotten better results.
During this run of six quality starts:
Very, very low 32% GB% with a “fine” K-BB% of 15.4%. He’s been lucky with a .211 BABIP and a better-than-average 14% HR/FB. You are still playing with a little bit of fire every time you roll out Pepiot because of his propensity for the longball, and the strikeout rate isn’t very high either, so he’s a risky SP, but it’s good to see him getting some results. His fastball is good, although it looks a bit worse this year than last, and he has at least a decent slider/changeup behind it.
Matthew Liberatore got thumped for the first time.
4 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 2 K, 1 BB
We haven’t talked about him in a while. Prior to yesterday, he had been rolling along pretty nicely to the tune of a 3.08 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. Yesterday’s result moved him up to 3.82 and 1.13. Let’s look at the full profile:
Nothing great in the strikeout department, but he throws a ton of strikes and limits the damage in the strike zone. The .310 xwOBA is solid and the JA ERA checks out with a competitive mark of 3.33.
He’s a command guy. And command guys are risky when they, well, don’t have the command. He does have the slider to get whiffs with (21.6% SwStr%), so it’s not as though he can’t get a big punchout when he needs it, but the fastball looks fully reliant on being located well since it has that low 8% SwStr%.
Brandon Pfaadt has to be in the drop zone now, even if he was even owned before these last two disasters. He’s now given up at least three earned runs in five straight outings and has a 5.51 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP. He’s lost more than six points on his K% this season, and the home runs continue to be an issue.
Pfaadt, in the past, had been a guy who was dominant against righties but pretty awful against lefties. This year, he hasn’t been very good against righties either.
Not great. I’m not sure if he’s pitching worse or if the league has just figured him out, but it’s hard to start Pfaadt in any context these days. The low walk rate is nice to see, and that offers some hope that he can figure out what’s going wrong and get back to being the effective pitcher when facing righties that he was prior. But the struggles with lefties are clear and probably not going away. And teams are stacking lefties against him. I wrote that sentence without even checking. I just assumed. But it does turn out that he’s faced the highest percentage of left-handed batters in the league this year at 63.5%.
You’ve gotta be able to get both sides of the plate out to succeed in the Majors. Teams will exploit you. The flip side of that leaderboard:
Noah Cameron has done it again.
That’s five starts of 6+ innings with less than two runs allowed to begin his career. And all of that on a 16% K%.
The Cameron approach has just been saying “here, hit it” and then he just gets the ball to go right at one of the guys who has the same jersey as him and is wearing a glove. And then those guys catch it.
A .148 BABIP!
2025 SP BABIP Leaders
Noah Cameron .148
Jameson Taillon .211
Carlos Rodon .220
Jack Leiter .221
Shota Imanaga .222
He also has a 99% strand rate.
He’s a real Houdini. You could say that Noah has been flooded with good luck this year.
On the other side of these luck marks:

Willson Contreras had a three-barrel day and no homers to show for it. He has just a 25% HR/Brl. That reminds us to check on the barrel details leaderboard.
The park adjustments in Baltimore haven’t helped Ryan Mountcastle with his two homers on 16 barrels. And he’s even pulling the barrels at a higher-than-average rate.
Contreras has sprayed his barrels (25% pull, 55% center, 20% oppo). That will naturally turn into a lower HR/Brl. But he’s also slugged just 1.50 on them when the league average is 2.23. The lowest slugging on barrels this year:
Largely the same list.
The highest pull rates on barrels:
The lowest:
You can find all of this on the “barrel details” tab of the main dashboard.
You will see Andrew Benintendi on the last three weeks’ barrel rate leaders below. He has a .238/.309/.415 slash line this year. Late last year he decided to start selling out for power, and it looks like he’s continued that this year with a 15.4% Brl% and a 28% GB%. He’s swinging for the fences. I’m not sure that’s the best strategy for his overall value, but it does make him a more interesting fantasy asset in deep leagues.
Miguel Vargas since May:
.254/.323/.518, .840 OPS, 15% K%, 8.7% BB%, .280 xBA, .372 xwOBA
Something has clicked for him.
He still isn’t hitting the ball hard (103 EV90), but he’s escaped the basement of the league in that category.
Here’s a big ugly screenshot showing you his key improvements from 2024 to 2025.
The reason I bring him up is because he’s on the super ultra mega hot leaderboard below.
I’ve set up my screen this week to have the Substack editor on 67% of the screen and then my text file on the other 33% so I can reference the notes while I write. And that has helped direct me to interesting players to highlight. Here, check it out:
I’ve also started using the Mac’s multi-screen thing you can do. You can just three-finger swipe your trackpad to get different desktops.
So I’m really in my freaking prime right now.
A lot of people have no idea how to best use their computers. They neglect so many great features. Many such cases, and it’s very sad. It’s probably one of the saddest things that happens in the world on a daily basis.
The cold hitter leaderboard at the bottom still sucks, and I’m meaning to change it. I wrote it like three years ago and haven’t touched it since. But let’s look to the main dashboard for high-owned sucky hitters over the last three weeks.
Pretty brutal season for Shea Langeliers.
Do you guys remember in the catcher preview when I said that Shea Langeliers was Cal Raleigh lite and a much better pick? That was awesome.
Gunnar Henderson has not had the best season with a .436 SLG.
The K% is up five points, the walks are down three points, and the quality of contact is worse as well. Nice. I’d call him a buy low, though. Maybe he was over-priced in draft season going right up there with the big boys (especially after the injury), but I have a lot of trouble believing he’s really this bad.
Today will be very interesting for Will Warren and Ben Brown. Those are the guys I’m watching. And I’d stream in Ben Brown where you can. I’ve talked about him a lot lately, but the underlying numbers all look really good and he quietly dominated the Reds last time out (he pitched behind an opener so you might have missed that outing since it wasn’t classified a start).
But that’s it for me today.
