There is a handful of young hitters I want to cover in my short time this morning, but first, we have to touch on this Bryce Elder start, right? He joined Skubal, Meyer, Webb, Wheeler, Gallen, and Gore as the only pitchers this year with at least 12 strikeouts and no walks in a start.
This is a guy who averages 4.5 strikeouts and 1.98 walks per start. He put up a dozen strikeouts on 14 whiffs. That was the fourth-highest strikeout-to-whiff ratio for pitchers with double-digit strikeouts in a given outing.
The average strikeout-to-whiff ratio is about 0.6. So that’s 0.6 strikeouts for each whiff you get. Your season leaders:
These are the guys getting strikeouts without many whiffs. You could say they’re more likely to see their strikeout rates drop as we move forward. The reverse:
You shouldn’t be adding Elder. Weird stuff happens like that. Pretty embarassing showing for the Giants, I’d say.
Someone asked me about Ranger Suarez yesterday. They correctly noticed that he’s done very well without the underlying numbers looking all that great.
The 15% K-BB% is mediocre, the 10.5% SwStr% is very low, and he appears a bit pretty lucky with a 7% HR/FB.
But this isn’t new with Ranger Suarez. He’s one of these guys who usually beats his indicators.
He has fantastic command, and he keeps the ball on the ground. That doesn’t mean he’s safe. You might remember last year when he put up a 1.75 ERA and a 0.82 WHIP in his first 11 starts, and then went for a 5.26 ERA with a 1.55 WHIP the rest of the way. I would consider Suarez a sell-high if you can pull it off, but it’s no guarantee that he won’t pitch well for most of the rest of the season.
Let’s get to these hitters.
Jac Caglianone has two hits in 21 PAs. Slow out of the gate. But he has hit the ball hard already, and the K% is just 19%. That’s the good news. The bad news is a super, super low 72% Z-Contact%. He’s been aggressive with a 55% Swing%. Pitchers are going to exploit that. I’m sure he’ll run into some homers before too much longer, but he does look like a guy who might hit .200 for a while before he adjusts. I don’t think anybody expects him to have a good strikeout rate, and the early signs with this Z-Contact% would suggest he’s on his way to a 28-30% K%. But we need a lot more data on him to really evaluate him at the Major League level.
Kyle Teel has been called up for the White Sox. He was one of their two big catching prospects. I’m going to pull the minor league profile for each guy.
Teel hits the ball pretty hard with a 104.7 EV90 in AAA, but that’s far from elite power. He didn’t have a GB% issue at AAA at 44.5%, but it wasn’t fantastic, either. And you see the higher K% there at 25.4%. He’s a very patient hitter with a 43% swing rate.
Teel has had plenty of success in the minors, but I think you know what I’m going to say next! A mid-20% K% in the minors is pretty close to a death sentence for me. And I say that in terms of guessing at what a player can do in the Major Leagues in the short term. I am in the business of telling you what is likely to happen in the next 3-6 months here, we’re not often talking about dynasty or long-term stuff.
It’s okay not to swing much, but you have to pair it with a high contact rate if you’re going to do that. And Teel doesn’t seem to have that. You’ll get some walks from him (he has two in his first eight PAs), but the strikeout rate is likely to be very high, and that caps what he can do. Unlikely Caglianone, he is not an elite power guy, either. So I don’t think we need to have Teel on many fantasy teams out there.
The Phillies called up Otto Kemp. Here’s the basic minor league profile on him:
Plenty of pop in the bat with a huge .594 SLG this year. But you see the 25% K% there. The advanced profile from this year:
I saw a few analyst guys saying his contact skills were “underwhelming” and “below average”. Trying to put lipstick on a pig. His contact skills are awful. A 66% Contact% against minor league pitching is the reddest of flags.
I’ll say this. It’s kinda tough to get worse than 66%. But to be in any sort of consideration for fantasy leagues, we need that to get significantly better while facing way better pitchers. So that isn’t going to happen.
Here are your MLB hitters with a K% below 66% this year.
So I guess it’s not a total dealbreaker. I mean, Aaron Judge is pretty good, right? But I would guess that Otto Kemp is more Kyren Paris than Aaron Judge.
The Astros have recently called up two somewhat intersting names. Shay Whitcomb and Jacob Melton.
I talked a lot about Whitcomb in my “deep league targets” articles in the offseason, so his call-up was interesting to me. However, the Astros haven’t started him once since calling him up, and he has one plate appearance. So I guess this will be a short analysis. They aren’t viewing him as a starter right now. That’s because of his defense, I suppose. He’s an infielder by trade, and the Astros are pretty set in the infield.
Jacob Melton has played in the outfield. He has some nic enumbers in the minors:
Gotta love the high contact rate (80.5%) with the barrel ability (24.4% Brl% on a short sample of 41 batted balls). He is 2/16 so far in the Majors with six strikeouts in 18 PAs. And I don’t think he’s an everyday player, and could very well end up back in AAA before long.
So this has been a pretty lame edition of the daily notes. But it’s Sunday, and I usually don’t even write these on Sundays, so I feel okay about it.
Enjoy your days!
