Somewhat back to normal now! Still at the beach, but I’m tucked away on the computer now back to work. Remote work can be a beautiful thing. The wife and kids get an extra long vacation with the extended family, and I don’t have to burn all of my vacation and neglect you guys for two full weeks.
I’m mostly caught up on the real world job, so let’s get into some baseball stuff. It feels great to be back.
I try not to comment on big name pitchers too much here. It’s not very useful for you guys to have me tell you that stud pitchers are good. But we do have to tip the cap to George Kirby yesterday. He put his owners at ease after opening up his season with three pretty bad starts.
7 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 14 K, 0 BB, 62.5% Strike%, 28.1% Ball%
That is about as good as Kirby has ever pitched. He previous high was a dozen strikeouts, and this was his first time over a 10:0 K:BB. Let’s look at the pitch mix for the year:
He’s throwing a lot of fastballs early on. Last year, the slider was his second most-thrown pitch at 24%, but it’s down a bit to 19% so far. Probably just a result of matchups and the fact that he’s been behind in the count a bit more this year. Nobody ever should have been worried about Kirby coming off of just three starts after a late start, but yeah, it’s relieving to see him post an elite outing like that one.
Cade Horton gave up four earned on seven hits, but did get a career-high 17 whiffs on a 20% SwStr%.
His sweeper has worked well in the Major Leagues with a 20.2% SwStr% and 33% Ball%. But the four-seamer is still very questionable.
At least he’s throwing it for strikes (32% Ball%). I think he’ll give up some hard contact on that pitch from time to time, but it looks like he’s a guy who can at least hang around the bigs as an SP3-SP4, and obviously there’s a lot of upside for the future if they can improve his fastball a bit.
Zac Gallen continues to pretty much suck.
6.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 5 K, 3 BB, 8.5% SwStr%, 34% Ball%
He’s now at a 3.96 JA ERA with an 11.6% K-BB%. I wonder what happened, man.
The regression started to hit for Tomoyuki Sugano as well. He gave up eight hits in 4.1 innings for three earned runs on a 2:1 K:BB. That raised his BABIP from .236 to .251. His JA ERA is very poor at 4.25 with a 9.9% K-BB%. He is fully reliant on generating soft contact, and that’s a tricky, tricky thing to do day in and day out.
The best “soft contact creators” of the year so far, as measured by xwOBA allowed on contact:
Ranger Suarez
Paul Skenes
Ronel Blanco
Bailey Falter
Robbie Ray
Taj Bradley
Zack Wheeler
Taijuan Walker
Clarke Schmidt
Quinn Priester
There are two ways, as far as I can see, to help yourself int his regard.
Be really nasty
Keep the ball on the ground
If your pitches are really hard to make contact with, then it follows that they’re also really hard to square up. So those two things would be correlated. A ground ball is a much better outcome for a pitcher than a line drive or fly ball as far as expected wOBA goes.
Average xwOBA by Batted Ball type
Ground Ball: .231
Fly Ball: .455
Line Drive: .660
Therefore, we need to really careful with the pitchers that are generating soft contact without high whiff rates or ground ball rates. Some of the names that fit that criteria (soft contact without high whiff or ground ball rates):
It’s all bad news for Taj Bradley. Not sure what happened with that guy. And I don’t think the park is the only reason for it.
Tanner Bibee had a good outing. He has looked a lot better of late. His last four outings:
→ 27.8% K%
→ 5.2% BB%
→ 12.4% SwStr%
→ 36.8% Ball%
→ 2.62 JA ERA
→ 1.40 WHIP+
The SwStr% + Ball% is pretty muh league average there. That’s a little bit concerning. Bibee’s fastball isn’t great, and it’s been even worse this year. But he has a good sweeper and changeup behind it and a very deep pitch mix. I think he’s still a guy to start every time in a standard league, but he doesn’t seem like a guy with true ace upside like we might have thought previously.
Eury Perez will return today. As we mentioned yesterday, he should push past 80 pitches against the Pirates. He threw 82 in his last rehab, so it seems like he’s built back up. I do think he’ll get a pretty quick hook if there’s pressure on him, but it’s good to see that they aren’t thinking of putting some hard 70-pitch limit on him or something like that.
A couple of hitters I meant to talk about yesterday but forgot…
Christian Encarnacion-Strand. He has been back for all of two games, but he has three homers and a double in those. That has a lot of people asking about him. It’s a tough situation, because you really can’t judge anything from two games no matter what happens. If we look at what he’s done in his Major League career so far:
438 PA, .240/.285/.426, 27% K%, 4.6% BB%, 20 HR
That’s a really nice home run rate. It would pace for almost 30 homers. So that’s good news. What has hurt him is the strikeout rate. He was at 28.6% in 2023 and 28.5% last year in his short time. This year, it’s 20.3% in 74 PAs. That’s a good early sign. An even better sign is the 85% Z-Contact%.
He hasn’t hit the ball super hard this year (104.5 EV90 on 52 balls in play). but I don’t have many questions about his raw power. And the home ballpark is a boost.
I would be adding him in most leagues just to see what happens. I think it’s fair to expect a 25-30 homer pace, and the batting average could end up being pretty decent too if these contact and strikeout improvements are maintained.
Ronny Mauricio is the other one I missed. He’s up for the Mets and has been a starter for them since getting called up. We have hardly seen any of him over the last two seasons due to injuries. In the minors this yar he slashed .323/.384/.508 with three homers and six steals in 73 PAs before getting the call-up. The power/speed combo is there, but he is a guy who figures to strike out a bunch in the Majors.
He does some MLB experience prior to this year. He slashed .255/.298/.357 with a 28% K% in 104 PAs back in 2023. I’m not sure if that experience is helping him now since it was so long ago, but it can’t hurt. I think Mauricio is a decent spec add in deep leagues, but my expectations are pretty low, and he’s going to have to perform to keep his job. The Mets have a lot of guys, although none of them seem capable of taking the job and running with it
How about a look at this Jacob Lopez guy. He is another young starting pitcher for the Athletics. They have been trying a lot of things to figure out that starting rotation. Lopez last season in the minors:
19 GS, 89 IP, 27.9% K%, 11.8% BB%, 4.26 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 1.4 HR/9
This year in the minors:
4 GS, 27 IP, 36.5% K%, 7.7% BB%, 2.33 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 0.7 HR/9
And in the Majors:
4 GS, 24 IP, 27.0% K%, 10.4% BB%, 6.00 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, 2.3 HR/9
That strikeout rate piques some interest. The SwStr% is good so far at 14.6%. But he’s been wild with a 40.2% Ball%.
The fastball velo is really low, but he does have double-digit swinging strike rates on all four pitches. That’s surprising to see.
He has a funky left-handed delivery.
That is an uncommon release point.
Or at least my eyes are telling me it is. But I know better than to trust my eyes.
Let’s look at the NUMBERS. I forgot I had this Release Points plot on the dashboard. Shout out to me.
So we see him over there with Nick Lodolo. And that helps the stuff play up. But starting at 90mph on the fastball, there’s a lot of upward movement you need to get to a good place.
Lopez is interesting for super deep leagues, and maybe even for some prop betting or something. It would seem like he’ll sneak some extra strikeouts in there with that delivery. And you’d think he’d be really tough for lefties to hit as well. And indeed that’s what we see:
He’s been able to strike out hitters on both sides of the plate, but you see the huge difference in WHIP+ there. Righties have racked up extra bases on him while lefties have not.
So if there is ever a spot where Lopez gets to face 4-5 lefties in a lineup, he’d be in a good place.
Jo Adell has been crushing of late. You’ll have that sort of streakiness with him, and right now he’s on the positive side of it.
I think we are a long ways past thinking Adell can truly break out. But there are some real positives in his profile this year. The strikeout rate is down to 24% (28% last year), and he hasn’t sacrified power for it (108.7 EV90, 13.4% Brl%).
With the power + speed combo he’s always had plus these improvements, I think Adell deserves a spot in any sort of deep league. You’ll probably get a couple of really rough cold streaks, but there’s a lot of good with him too.
Luis Garcia has started to wake up as well. Since May 15th:
.324/.343/.529, 11% K%, 13.3% Brl%, .426 xwOBA
Crushing. His xBA is at .310 for the year with a .370 xwOBA. He’s lifting the ball more this year (45% GB%, down from 48% last year), and he has maintained his good power (104.9 EV90).
Remember that Garcia went for 18 homers and 22 steals last year on a .282 batting average. He was a great roto fantasy player. He’s at 5-7-.259 this year, but he’s done a lot of that damage lately.
One more guy to sneak in here. Jacob Latz has joined the Rangers rotation and struck out seven yesterday. He was working as a reliever for them this year, but now he’s been pushed into the rotation. For the year, he has a 29% K% and a 10.9% BB%. That’s pretty good. The K% will likely come down if he’s really going to be a traditional starter, but he showed us decent fastball velo and a lot of whiffs on the changeup + slider yesteday.
That’s just another guy to keep an eye on for now if you’re in deep leagues.
