MLB Daily Notes - June 9th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
There is no quiet anywhere. It’s been a very noisy vacation week, and it is wearing me down. But now I have escaped to the porch to write these daily notes. It’s still not quiet, but at least the sounds of the birds and the ocean and the … air conditioners … are consistent and not asking me for chocolate milk.
I can’t even say at this point how much I like writing these daily notes every day. Actually I can say it - I really like writing these daily notes every day. I’m halfway through my third season writing these every day, and I have never missed a day, I don’t think. You would really think that I wouldn’t be as interested in it as I was at first, but none of that has gone away. It’s awesome. I don’t know if I’ll still be doing this in 10 years or whatever, but for right now I can’t really see anything ahead that would make me stop. The most likely thing would probably be that I get my hand chopped off trying to cut the grass or do something else handy around the house, that would make it tough. I’m not a very handy guy, so I could definitely see me like dropping my car on myself while trying to change my oil myself or shocking myself to death trying to turn an appliance on or something. But for now, we’re writing.
I think my wife and in-laws might think I’m weird and wonder what I’m doing here every morning. My wife should know by now, but I don’t think she knows how much I enjoy it, so maybe she thinks I’m just trying to ignore the kids. I don’t know, maybe that’s something I should communicate. Nah.
I had the best tasting rum and coke of my life yesterday after a long day doing beach stuff. It’s freaking hot here and by like 4:00 the non-stop nature of the day has me begging for a stiffner. It was a glorious drink, and I even got to watch the Pirates game, a super clutch midday reset. Alcohol is cool, kids.
I probably have too big of an audience to make jokes like that without following up in some way. Alcohol can ruin your life, of course, but if you have the temperament to moderate - it’s definitely a life-enhancer, especially for a parent.
Pitcher Review
More good stuff from MacKenzie Gore with five strong innings, two runs and seven strikeouts. He’s now over a 20% K-BB% with a 3.57 ERA and 1.37 WHIP. The change in homers allowed has been the key for him along with an improved walk rate. If you remember back to the offseason, I liked Gore because he was crushed a lot by allowing a high barrel rate last year, and that’s typically something that regresses toward the mean.
We can even apply this rule in-season. I like to look for pitchers with decent K-BB% (15%+ or so) and high barrel rates, you’ll typically find some bad ERAs there because they’ve given up a bunch of homers, but with a decent K-BB%, a regressing barrel rate could really help them. Some of those names right now
Dane Dunning (16% K-BB%, 14% Brl%)
Dean Kremer (15% K-BB%, 12.9% Brl%)
Bryce Miller (17% K-BB%, 12.7% Brl%)
Kevin Gausman (18% K-BB%, 11.2% Brl%)
Joe Ryan (23% K-BB%, 10.9% Brl%)
Ben Brown (20% K-BB%, 10.9% Brl%)
You should expect less regression for high fly-ball pitchers (like Joe Ryan here), but still.
More on that fly ball vs. barrel stuff, here’s the relationship between Brl% and FB%.
About 30% of fly balls will be barrels, so we can look at the names furthest away from that 30% and say they’re probably due for some regression as well. Cristopher Sanchez is at the top of the list here, he’s given up just 20 fly balls all year, but 12 of them have been barrels. That’s 60%, not a number likely to stick. He rarely gives up fly balls though, so it doesn’t really matter that much. The top 10:
Cristopher Sanchez 60%
Taijuan Walker 58%
Patrick Corbin 53%
Logan Webb 49%
Jose Soriano 49%
Brady Singer 49%
Dane Dunning 47%
Randy Vasquez 46%
Paul Blackburn 46%
Keaton Winn 44%
And the bottom 10:
Nick Martinez 10%
Albert Suarez 12%
Hunter Greene 17%
Cristian Javier 18%
Jameson Taillon 18%
Nick Lodolo 19%
Luis Severino 19%
Brandon Pfaadt 19%
Ross Stripling 19%
Nathan Eovaldi 20%
The two big Reds arms being at the bottom here is quite fortunate for the Reds. That regression will hurt badly in the 50% chance it happens at home.
That was a tangent I didn’t expect to go on.
Taj Bradley bounced back against the Orioles. Stupid Ass Clint™ in my league benched him after that nine-earned thumping, classic Stupid Ass Clint™.
It’s a 30% K% and a 7.6% BB% for Bradley on the year, and speaking of the barrel stuff - dude has allowed a 17% barrel rate this year. The highest barrel rate is seems even possible to allow over a full season is probably 13%. Michael Kopech led the league in that last year and he was at 12.7%. Bradley is looking like an absolute stud and you’d never know that by his 5.17 ERA (3.23 SIERA). Even after that nice start, he’s a fantastic buy-low SP. But I certainly won’t be able to pull that off since Clint is reading this and I’ve insulted him several times in this section.
If anybody hasn’t figured it out yet, Clint is one of my very best friends. I stayed with him a couple of weeks ago when I was in Pittsburgh, great guy, and a really cool apartment in the city. In case you want to know what he looks like, here he is celebrating my Matt Chapman home run catch (shout out to me).
Kinda looks like Paul Skenes is standing up there too, guy must have sneaked out to centerfield for a brewski since he wasn’t pitching.
If anybody is ever in Pittsburgh and needs a place to crash, just let me know and I’ll give you Clint’s address I’m sure he’d be happy to have you.
Hunter Brown had yet another good result.
6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, K, 4 BB, 11.1% SwStr%, 44.4% Strike%, 33.3% Ball%
So none of the underlying stuff is good. We’re not talking about a must-own guy or anything like that, but given how awful he was at first this last month or so is very interesting. As I’ve mentioned before, he started throwing a sinker in early May. His numbers since May began:
6 GS, 3.05 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 27.4% K%, 9.6% BB%, 17.8% K-BB%, 56% GB%
The ground ball rate was 47% before that, so this sinker has helped him greatly in keeping the ball out of the air, and that’s a good thing. The 27% K% is also huge, although it’s a shaky foundation with the 12.4% SwStr% and 47.6% Strike%.
He’s ripped off four straight quality starts now with 23 strikeouts in his last three starts, so in 12-teamers I’m adding him. In fact, I added him a few starts ago in my 10-teamer, so that’s why I’m writing so much about him.
I think I said I wouldn’t write about Casey Mize ever again, but the dude got one whiff yesterday on 97 pitches. What in the world. That was only the fourth time all year a pitcher threw at least 80 pitches with a sub-4% SwStr%.
If Mize were just a normal bad pitcher, I wouldn’t have to light him up like this all the time, but he’s not. He was a former #1 pick and #1 pitching prospect in baseball and even this year people were still hyping him up after years of being just awful because he had one good number on the movement of his fastball or something. I can’t get over that.
Matt Waldron had another quality start
6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 K, 2 BB
The most important number there is the two walks, because his over 1.5 walks prop bet was one of the best bets my model has picked out all year, so I’m glad that one hit.
The props have been just crushing in June with an ROI of 13.6%. That number if 7% for the year, which is still quite impressive if I do say so myself. At this point the paid membership pays for itself, just put a dollar on each recommended bet each day. That’ll be about 7 bets per day or so, so over a 30-day month with a 7% ROI% you’d make $15. So that’s a paid membership plus six dollars which you could use to, I don’t know like buy a lollipop or something with - thanks a lot Obama.
We have the Hurston Waldrep debut today. You may be asking yourself, why does Jon only cover some rookie debuts while he ignores others? Well, the answer is - I focus on the guys that I have added onto my home league fantasy team and I don’t care about much else! I do try to cover everything and not give preference to my own teams, but obviously the players at the top of mind will be the ones on my teams so it’s inevitable that this will happen.
Waldrep is interesting because he was a first round pick just last year out of Florida. He went on to make eight starts in the minors in 2023 and made it the whole way to AAA. This year he’s been mostly in AA, but the overall numbers from his minor league career:
18 GS, 2.55 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 27.7% K%, 9.4% BB%, 0.43 HR/9
He’s only made one start at AAA this year but that’s enough for us to know what kind of pitch mix he has:
Seems like a really interesting dude with 46% splitter usage, at least in that one start. I’m guessing that’s not your typical splitter, it might be more like the Skenes sinker/splitter thing. I guess I could look that up and read something from a scout about it, but we’ll just look more at it later when we can get some big league footage on him.
The overall SwStr% this year is 16.6% and the ball is at 36%. The fastball velo isn’t great but I believe he does have upper-90’s in there sometimes. We’ll see. I can’t say you should drop anybody useful for him, but if you have a streaming spot on your team it makes sense to make a speculative add on him here.
I’m really pushing my luck here with the computer time so I’m going to hang it up. We’re off to get the kids dressed and go back into the sun. There’s this dope church down here that has guest speakers every Sunday during the summer, and apparently today there’s this real strong preacher from Philadelphia so I’m pretty pumped to hear him.
I know I’m nearly completely alone on this, but one of my favorite things to do is to listen to an old man give an expository sermon.
Enjoy your Sundays!
