I never seem to stick to a theme here. I did the “spotlights” thing here for a few days, and then just completely forgot about it. It hit me yesterday that I had just stopped doing that theme. And it was a pretty good theme. It would be kind of nice to settle on a consistent pattern here. That would be make my daily notes life a little bit easier. So let’s try this. We’ll call it “Three Up, Three Down”. That sounds pretty baseball-ish.
I had Chris Sale here at first, but that was too obvious. It’s not going to do anybody any good for me to tell you that Sale dominated the Rockies (7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 10 K, 0 BB). So he’s just fine, you should be happy to have Sale.
Gonsolin was the most interesting man of the day yesterday. He gave back from a long, long time off and set down the Marlins beautifully.
6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 9 K, 0 BB, 22.1% SwStr%, 55.8% Strike%
That kind of SwStr% and strikeout total is super uncommon for Gonso.
Prior to yesterday, the last time we Gonsolin in the Majors was August 18th, 2023. During that 2023 season:
103 IP, 18.9% K%, 9.2% BB%, 1.7 HR/9
Those are all very bad numbers. His K% in the Majors since 2021 is 23% with a 9% BB%. Middle-of-the-road type numbers. He’s been about a league-average pitcher. Because of that, it’s going to take me a long time to ever be convinced that he’s a much better pitcher now after missing all of that time.
But if this was a rookie debut, we’d be pretty excited. So we should be somewhat fair to the guy. Here are the numbers:
Fantastic marks on all four pitches. The slider and splitter were especially devastating.
This is the same pitch mix as we saw in 2023, so that makes me even less likely to believe he’s a new man now.
So I would not spend a ton of money to get Gonsolin this weekend. I’d let someone else buy into him. But if you need an “at least decent” pitcher on a team that gives a ton of run support, Gonsolin is fine for that.
Ortiz has been impressing me this year. He threw up six scoreless yesterday to bring his season ERA down to a (still bad) mark of 4.78. The WHIP is also 1.41. So why do I have anything positive to say about Luis L. Ortiz?
→ 25.7% K%
→ 14.4% SwStr%
→ 35.7% Ball%
Those are nice strikeout indicators. Over his last four starts, he has a 34.8% K% with a 15.5% SwStr%. Elite stuff. However, the command is even worse over this time (13.5% BB%, 37% Ball%).
I think Ortiz can continue to get some strikeouts, and that makes him someone to own in a 15-team league points league. That’s the kind of situation we’re talking about. I picked him up last weekend in the MLB DW points league and I’m feeling pretty good about him now. He made up for most of that -53 I took from Bowden Francis on Tuesday…
We saw a few season debuts yesterday. Giolito returned to the Majors for the first time since October 1st, 2023. And he looked pretty decent:
6 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 7 K, 2 BB, 2 HR
If you unfamiliar with Giolito, he’s been a pretty good strikeout guy with a mediocre walk rate and a home run problem. That’s how we came to know him from 2022-2023. Yesterday:
That’s too many four-seamers. He doesn’t have a good fastball. The money pitch is the changeup. This was probably just easing into things? Maybe you don’t want to rip off 60% non-fastballs right out of the gate.
So I’d say the four-seamer usage comes down under 50% soon and then the changeup and slider come up a bit. That should turn into a higher SwStr% than 10%.
I’m not saying Giolito is a ten-team league guy. The whole picture from 2022-2023 wasn’t all that good (25.5% K%, 9.0% BB%, 1.7 HR/9, 4.94 ERA, 1.37 WHIP). But he is a legitimate MLB pitcher, and there are a ton of fantasy leagues out there where he should be owned. The best spots for him would be against teams that don’t hit the long ball very often, because that is usually how he’ll be giving up his earned runs.
He is now down to a 20% K% on the year after striking out just three Mets in six innings yesterday. He walked FIVE, and now the BB% is up to 12%.
So, do the math. That’s an 8% K-BB%. He is around some names you don’t want him to be around.
The cutter just isn’t elite anymore, it wouldn’t seem. He’s given up four homers and a .417 xwOBA on the pitch with a low 9.5% SwStr%.
I’m not sure what you do with Burnes. You aren’t going to get a great return for him in a trade right now. But I’m not opposed to just saying take whatever you can get for him. It’s really not looking good for the big man.
I’m going to make this one quick. Jobe now has a 17.6% K% and a 13.7% BB% on the year. Sometimes, that’s all that matters. He has thrown 416 pitches now with a 10.1% SwStr% and a 39% Ball%. Very bad numbers. It looks like Jobe… sucks. Not good for the scouting bros who had him at the top of the league’s pitching prospects ranks for a few years…
Three walks, seven hits allowed. Roupp threw 92 pitches with a 10.9% SwStr% and a horrible 44.6% Strike%.
So the SwStr% on the season is good (14.1%), but the ball rate is not (39.5%). And the sinker continues to be awful.
A 4.1% SwStr% isn’t the worst thing in the world for a sinker if it comes with a high called strike rate and a bunch of ground balls, but that has not been the case for Roupp’s sinker. It’s a very bad pitch, and I am back to thinking this guy should just be a reliever.
It’s probably good news for Hayden Birdsong. I imagine that those two have their roles flipped at some point. He has a 28% K% and a 9.4% BB% out of the bullpen this year with a sick 17% SwStr% and decent enough 36% Ball%. He’s somewhat stretched out still (50 pitches last time out), so it would be a pretty quick transition for him into the rotation. I’m not a big believer in him (as a starter) either, but that would present an opportunity in the fantasy game to take a speculative buy on.
Big, big day for Winn in the double header. He has been the Cardinals #2 hitter for the last few days, and he rewarded them big time yesterday with two homers and a steal yesterday.
Since returning from the IL:
33 PA, .321/.394/.643, 18% K%, 2 HR, 2 SB, 37.5% SB Attempt%
The season OPS is now at a pretty decent .770, but the K% is still very high at 26%. I think that will continue to descend, because Winn just has not been a strikeout guy in the minors or in his full MLB season last year. It’s a good idea to add Masyn Winn right now.
He finally got on the board yesterday with a homer, and he even added a triple! It’s possible that Muncy is coming to the end of his rope. He’s up there in age, and the numbers so far this season are bad:
.194/.309/.301, 32% K%, 13.6% BB%
But the good news is:
.334 xwOBA, 11.9% Brl%, 105.5 EV90
Since April 15th, he has a much better 20% K% with a .371 xwOBA and a 12.9% Brl%. So he is doing more of the things we’re used to him doing.
He is back from injury, and he’s already done some notable things. First, he made this catch:
You cannot call this a good play. It was a bad play but he bailed himself out in a way that few other human beings could do.
It did bring back a Little League memory of mine. I was always a middle infielder. I played second or short in Little League, and still do to this day in this men’s league I’m in. But one time, I was in right field. And there was a line drive hit at me, and I started running in at it - completely misjudging it. So I had to pull up and then jump up in the air to catch it. And I caught it. So the coaches all started going crazy because I ended up jumping way up to get it. But even then, I knew like… that was not a praiseworthy play. That was awful. I could have just stood still and caught it easy.
Anyways, Varsho also blasted a homer last night. There is no useful data on him and his eight PAs so far, but it’s a positive sign about the health of his shoulder. I was a bit worried that the shoulder surgery might have zapped the power. And maybe it did, we can’t know yet, but this was a good sign that he can still swing the bat with enough force to hit a ball very far.
Varsho is probably only an option in 15-teamers or so. The batting average is going to be low, and there is no guarantee that he hits homers or steal bags. But at least he’s previously had the ability to do those two things, and that has always made him a bit interesting to me in deep leagues.
And I don’t have time for the “three down hitters”. Writing up 12 players every morning is a bit of a task. Not sure if I’ll be able to continue this format.
I would say that Matt Chapman is looking very bad this year. He’s on the list I just cooked up of hitters with K% above 27% and Brl% below 10%. It’s a list of mostly bad hitters, but Chapman sits there with the highest PA total of the qualifiers.
So, I guess you can call those dozen hitters the “down hitters” of the day. Have a good one!
