A couple of people told me the daily notes didn’t hit their inbox yesterday, but some people said it worked fine! So, I’m not sure what happened there, and I hope things go better today. But if you’re really into reading these posts, I once again recommend the Substack app. That’s how I do it - it’s a great app. There’s even a feature on there that will read the notes to you. I listened to it the other day to see how it sounded, and I was really impressed. It did not sound like a computer reading it at all. It got the voice inflection and the proper stresses in the sentences right. Pretty cool.
I tend to stay away from the league’s known aces in these notes, because it’s not super useful to tell you that 100% owned studs are very good. And even when they do bad, it’s not really worth dwelling on. But we have to mention a 32-whiff outing from Tarik Skubal.
7 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 12 K, 0 BB, 33.3% SwStr%, 61.5% Strike%, 27.1% Ball%
He is on top of every single automated leaderboard below. It was one of the most dominant outings you’ll see. There have been 11 starts of 30+ whiffs or more since 2021. It’s a rare thing to see. Here they are, put into an Excel template that I just created because I like this shade of blue.
He had 19 in-zone whiffs last night. That was the fourth-most since 2021. Joe Ryan has the top spot in a start a couple of weeks ago - I guessed we missed that one!
I remember tweeting out before the season that Skubal’s Cy Young odds as given by the sports book were ridiculous and it would be foolish to take that line. But I’m not exactly sure who takes it from him as long as he stays healthy.
Hunter Brown is having a true breakout season. He was good last year, but the guy is better this year.
5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 9 K, 4 BB
The whiffs were not fantastic yesterday (11.9% SwStr%, 12 whiffs), and he didn’t have the greatest command (41.6% Ball%), but another donut in the “R” column and he has his ERA down to 1.48 with a 0.90 WHIP.
We now have 11 pitchers with
→ 6+ GS
→ K-BB% >= 24%
No real surprises on that list. And that’s the beauty of K-BB%. You don’t really luck into it. You aren’t going to see a non-elite pitcher putting up crazy high K-BB% over any sort of significant sample.
I think you could say it’s even more impressive this year since walk rates are up. The strike zone is being called smaller this year. So there’s a premium on the elite command guys. Here are your SPs with 6+ starts and a walk rate below 5%.
Eovaldi, Skubal, Ryan, Lodolo, Sears, Liberatore, Freeland, Lopez, Bassitt, Sugano, Greene, Wheeler, Wesneski, Woo, Schwellenbach, Ober, Littell, Senzatela
Hunter Dobbins had a really nice outing against the Royals.
6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 6 K, 0 BB, 16.0% SwStr%, 32.1% Ball%
The JA model kinda picked that out. It was projecting him pretty well, or at least a lot better than what the markets were saying. He was the Red Sox minor league pitcher of the year last year. That’s a fact I learned last night while watching the game. The Pacers were getting shellacked and my wife was reading so I turned on the MLB app. I found that I was blacked out from about 2/3rds of the available games, so I watched a little Royals action and found that out.
Anyways, Dobbins has now made four starts in the Majors:
22.2 IP, 2.78 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 19.8% K%, 4.2% BB%, 0.79 HR/9
He has two quality starts out of four starts and has gotten the job done. The weird thing is that his minor league starts haven’t gone nearly as well (13.2% K%, 11.3% BB% in 12.2 innings in AAA), but I guess the small sample rule applies even in the minors.
The most useful data we can use right now is the on the pitcher profile tab on the main dashboard.
His 13.2% SwStr% outpaces the 19.8% K%. He has double-digit SwStr% on the slider, sweeper, splitter, and curveball. And the slider and sweeper have been especially good. I do think this K% will trend up into the 20s.
But we have that classic problem where the fastball isn’t very good. It hasn’t gotten hit hard yet (.372 SLG), but a 46% Strike% and 5.4% SwStr% aren’t good early signs. The velo isn’t awful (95), so maybe he’ll get better. I don’t know, and I’m not going to get into the pitch movement stuff on it. But I do think Dobbins is sneaky and worth some adds in fantasy leagues right now.
Will Warren has now turned in two very good starts in a row. This was another spot the projection model nailed last night.
7.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 7 K, 1 BB, 14.9% SwStr%, 32.2% Ball%
I guess his outing before this wasn’t “very good” because he went just 4.2 innings, but he now has 15 strikeouts in his last two.
We now have a solid 26% K% on the guy with a 10% BB%. That walk rate isn’t good, but it’s not like crazy terrible either. I don’t like that 10.8% SwStr%, that would suggest the K% is bloated. And the SwStr% is at 10.6% even in these last two starts. So I guess the strikeouts aren’t for real.
But the fastball velo and pitch counts both trending up:
Maybe he’s not a standard fantasy league guy, but I think you can view him as a streamer and a DFS play, which we did last night and it worked out quite well!
It’s definitely time to cut Roki Sasaki. That bad start against the Diamondbacks was easy to see coming, but it was the absolute last chance for me. He’s done for!
4 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 0 K, 2 BB, 6.6% SwStr%, 42.6% Strike%, 29.5% Ball%
Funny enough, it was his best ball rate by far. But a good ball rate only works if you can not get destroyed in the strike zone. And Sasaki’s inability to get whiffs is clear. He now has an 8.7% SwStr% on the season, and his ball rate is still higher than his strike rate.
There are only two pitchers in the league with
→ 5+ GS
→ SwStr% below 10%
→ Ball% above 40%
Those are Sasaki and Andre Pallante. That’s a combination of stats you want nothing to do with. Here’s a full list of every SP with a SwStr% below 10% and a Ball% above 38%.
CORBIN BURNES is there, my oh my!
I see Jacob Misiorowski in the notes. He had a big outing at AAA last night:
6.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 11 K, 1 BB, 21.2% SwStr%, 31.3% Ball%
We know that the guy can rack up whiffs and strikeouts. The question is just about if he can throw enough strikes to succeed as a starting pitcher in the Major Leagues. So far this year, the signs are pretty good.
K%: 33.1%
BB%: 11.0%
SwStr%: 14.8%
Ball%: 35.8%
His fastball is one of the best in baseball, but he relies heavily on it:
I still think he’ll end up in the Brewers bullpen rather than their rotation. But the Brewers, wisely, are giving him this year to see if he can run with a rotation job. He has now thrown 92 and 99 pitches in his last two outings. I’d imagine he’ll be making a start in the Majors pretty soon. Decent stash if you’re in a league that rewards strikeouts and doesn’t punish walks that bad… I’m not sure what kind of league that would be, though!
A couple of hitters to cover before I take my kids out of here to do a last-minute Mother’s Day dash. My wife loves Sweet Tarts, and I was at the store yesterday on my own looking for them, and they didn’t have any. So I bought her a filet mignon instead, which I will cook for her over butter on my cast iron skillet, which I have named “The Nick Casty”. My wife has no idea why I call it that.
Addison Barger. Have you seen this guy?
I thought they had strict gun control in Canada…
He joins Vlad, Oneil Cruz, Ohtani, Noel, Judge, Schwarber, Noelvi Marte, Mountcastle, Caminero, Jordan Walker, Wood, and Conine (?) in the 116+ mph club.
Speaking of exit velocity, Agustin Ramirez hit four balls above 100mph last night. And he went 1/5. He now has 21 batted balls above 100mph out of 45 total batted balls. That 46.7%, putting him in the top 25.
He’s hitting .286/.322/.643 on the year with a very impressive .315 xBA and .395 xwOBA on a fantastic 81% Contact% and 18.6% K%. It would seem like the guy is a very competent MLB hitter. Although we’re still only about 60 PAs into his career. But I’d want him on my team right now.
Only six hitters are below a 20% K% with a 15%+ Brl%.
Go get that man! His xwOBA has not fallen below .360 even during his “cold” streaks. My chart can’t even contain him!
Okay, I’ve really gotta go! I’m going to see if I can get a mini slate preview out since we have a ton of baseball going after 4pm. But, no promises. Gotta find those sweet tarts first.
