I am very backed up with my real job, so I have to be brief here today. There were five SP outing this weekend that really stood out.
8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 11 K, 1 BB
That was of the highest-scoring start of the season. He put up 42 DraftKings points in that one. And Blanco has been popping a bit in my automated ranks and other things.
He’s now #14 on the automated SP rankings.
There are plenty of imperfections with that ranking system. All it does is look at the numbers provided there and weights them in a somewhat arbitrary way. But it’s a lot better than a random number generator, and all of those stats have some predictive power. So it’s a good thing to be near the top of the list.
What we have known about Blanco since last year is that his secondaries are really good, but he has a crappy fastball. He’s a Reese Olson type pitcher. I say this a lot - but it needs repeating. These kinds of pitchers will give you elite starts from time to time. When they go out there and locate the fastball well (or maybe the hitters just don’t punish the fastballs they should), they set up their secondary stuff well and that turns into a lot of strikeouts. And that’s what happened yesterday against Cincinnati.
He threw 40 sliders, 29 fastballs, 19 curves, and 132 changeups. The four-seamer was bad (3.4% SwStr%, 41% Strike%, 52% Ball%), but nobody did anything with it. He didn’t allow a hit on it.
And that let the whiffs and strikes pile up on the slider (22.5% SwStr%, 23% Ball%). And the curveball (15.8% SwStr%) and changeup (23.1% SwStr%) were also effective in generating swings and misses.
The season numbers:
The 15% K-BB% is mediocre. But he has not been hit hard whatsoever with a .195 xBA and a .276 xwOBA.
Eventually this bad fastball is going to catch up to him. He’s allowed a .357 xwOBA and a .500 SLG on the pitch.
He took a lesson from Max Meyer and hid the fastball against the Reds, and it worked wonders for him just like it did for Max.
So that got me thinking - is this just the book on the Reds? I mean a pitcher like Meyer or Blanco should be perfectly happy to lean into their secondaries. They won’t need to be told twice to throw fewer fastballs in a certain matchup. I pulled some fastball vs. non fastball data to look into this.
The Reds are the fourth-worst offense in the league (measured by xwOBA) against non-fastballs. Consequetially, perhaps, they see the fifth-lowest rate of fastballs against them.
This can turn into the “chicken or the egg” question pretty quick. Does a team not see fastballs because they’re good at hitting fastballs? Or are they not good at hitting fastballs because they don’t see many fastballs? Or is something else?
The Dodgers see the fewest fastballs in the league.
The Blue Jays and White Sox see the most.
And it’s pretty clear that the Dodgers would be up there among the “most feared” lineups, while the Blue Jays and White Sox would be near the bottom. I doubt it’s quite that sample, but we do see a relationship between being good at hitting fastballs and not seeing a lot of fastballs.
Eight teams are aboev a .375 xwOBA against fastballs. They’re all below 55% fastball usage against.
But they’re all at least decent at hitting non-fastballs too. I mean what do you do when you’re against the Dodgers who are second in the league against fastball and fourth against non?
I guess the more interesting takeaway here would be to answer the question about which teams present the biggest opportunity to guys like Blanco? Which teams are much worse against non-fastballs as compared to fastballs? The answer would seem to be:
So the Yankees murder fastballs but become a middle-of-the-pack offense against non. They are seperated from the rest of the group by more than two points - a huge gap. Notably, the Reds aren’t even in the top six. They’re down at #9.
But again, this is all too simplistic. It is not as simple as just telling Emerson Hancock to go out there and not throw any heaters to the Yankees tonight. Non fastballs are hard to locate. And they are (I think) more tiring on your arm. You can’t just go out there and throw 20 straight sliders and curveballs. It doesn’t work like that.
So what do we do with any of this? I’m not sure, but I guess you could take this data and choose when to and when not to deploy fantasy pitchers like Blanco who dominate with their secondaries but have terrible fastballs. We clearly saw a shift away from the heater yesterday against the Reds, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that Max Meyer start against Cincy wasn’t discussed with Blanco prior to the game yesterday.
Somehow, my main dashboard calls him “Matthew” while the MLB & MiLB Stats Dashboard has him as “Matt”.
Boyd has a 2.78 ERA on the season now, and he’s not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his outings. He has a 15:0 K:BB in his last two outings and has the K-BB% up to 16.7%.
Cubs fans are probably pretty happy with the guy. He has kept them in every game he’s started. But we don’t freaking care about that. We want to know if he should be started in 12-team fantasy leagues.
The arsenal:
So the SwStr% is above 13% and the Ball% is at 34%. That works very nicely for us. The other thing he’s been able to do is manage the long ball. Now, the 36% GB% is low, but even with that he’s limited it to just a .99 HR/9. The .401 SLG is pretty good, and he hasn’t been overly lucky in home run prevention with a 14% HR/FB (league average is around 15-16%). He’s actually pretty similar to his teammate Shota Imanaga in that he’s a lefty with decent K-BB% stuff but a fly ball problem. Last year, Imanaga took advantage of the colder weather and managed home runs early in the year:
First 9 starts: 0.50 HR/9
And he did that until he didn’t:
Last 20 starts: 1.8 HR/9
Warmer temperatures don’t benefit fly ball pitchers. But it’s not like a world-changing difference. At the end of the day, I don’t believe in Boyd as a sub-1 HR/9 guy. I think he’ll give up more of those, and you’ll see the consequences of that in the ERA. The SIERA currently sits at 3.74. That’s not a great number, but it’s very much competitive.
Boyd is just better than he’s given credit for, and I think he always has been. So yeah, he’s a top 70 or so SP in my book. There are questions about workload given that he threw just 59 innings total last year. But we don’t have to worry about that kind of stuff when we’re just playing the fantasy game week-to-week.
He went out there on Sunday Night Baseball and struck out nine Phillies while giving up just one run (a solo shot to Schwarber). His K% is now up to 26.1%, a pretty nice number. But the command continues to hold him back. The walk rate is up to 11.2%. The good news, I think, is that his 36.8% Ball% would predict more of a 9%ish BB%. So maybe that BB% will come down into the single-digits the rest of the way out.
His four-seamer does have velo (96.1 on average), but it’s not a good fastball. Hitters have a .370 xwOBA against it, and it also has a very, very high ball rate for a fastball at 41%. That caps Ortiz’s ceiling substantially. But all of this stuff was true last year and he was also not getting many strikeouts. So there’s been a big improvement on that front, and that’s probably the most important thing for a pitcher.
I’d say Ortiz is a mighty fine streamer, and a 14+ team league starter. He’s better than the 11% ownership.
Smith has single handedly made the White Sox rotation not the worst in the league, I think. Okay well I guess the Rockies and Orioles would be worse no matter what, but Smith has been a bright star in a very dark sky.
Six scoreless innings on Saturday against the Marlins with a 7:0 K:BB.
HOWEVER, his 21.5% K% and 8.5% BB% on the year aren’t good. That’s a K-BB% well below what we’re looking for.
But he’s young, right? And the trend is going in the right direction.
The 13.6% SwStr% is great, and the 37% Ball% isn’t a huge problem. It’s also a big boost that he gets ground balls (47%) and limits hard contact (.298 xwOBA, .269 SLG). There is no guarantee that the soft contact numbers continue, you can never put your trust in that - but it’s a littel bit more believable for a guy with a changeup this unique and good.
That changeup has been superb with the 17.4% SwStr%, 60% GB%, and .200 SLG. If the fastball can continue to play around a 54% Strike%, I think Smith is going to have more good starts than bad. That’s a really nice combo of pitches.
I did not intend to write all of this, and now I’m even more behind on the stuff I should be doing - but it’s okay. AJSS has a great two-start week for those of us who streamed him in, and now he’s got us thinking about holding on for this week!
He now sports a 2.75 ERA in the Majors across six starts. He took advantage of two soft matchups last week.
So the results have been good, but the underlying stuff isn’t very convincing.
Strike%: 44.4% (awful)
SwStr%: 12.9% (good / not great)
Ball%: 38.0% (bad)
xwOBA: .362 (bad)
The SIERA is 4.06. The HR/FB is very low at 10%, and the stand rate is very high at 85%. He’s been quite lucky. He gets another advantageous matchup against the Nationals this week. And actually, it looks like his next two starts will be against him.
I think my take is anti-AJSS. The underlying stuff still looks pretty bad.
That will do it.
