So we made fun of Jackson Jobe and Chase Dollander last week when they pitched against each other and both laid massive turds on the mound. Well, they both pitched very well yesterday.
Jobe:
→ 5.2 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 7 K, 5 BB, 15% SwStr%, 39% Ball%
Dollander:
→ 6.0 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 7 K, 3 BB, 9.4% SwStr%, 42.4% Ball%
So they got into the sixth inning and they had the strikeouts going, but the command was bad in both cases. In Dollander’s case, the whiffs weren’t there either with just eight. That Rangers lineup didn’t have Corey Seager or Josh Smith, so Dollander had a pretty soft matchup there and the Rangers just couldn’t do anything with the bats.
We should always be a bit more patient with these young pitchers and not dwell on their earliest starts in the Majors, but you can’t start either one of these guys in standard fantasy leagues this year. Everything looks pretty rough.
But we’ll keep an eye on them as they go. The arm talent is there for them to develop into decent fantasy pitchers.
I am guessing that I led some of you into this Ryan Gusto blow-up. I’m not going to say sorry. But at least you can know that I, too, started him. So I got my Monday destroyed right there with you. And isn’t that the most important part?
Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
Romans 15:16
Let us mourn, but let us mourn… together. But I’m starting Gusto again. I’ll do it again. I still like him. Those seven earnies could not take away a single checkmark from him.
Maybe it’s stupid, but I will start a five-check SP every time. I love these checkmarks. I love them.
And look, I even watched some of Gusto last night. And then I remembered why I don’t watch the games. I saw his fastball and I was like dang that’s a good-looking fastball. And it’s a four-seamer that has a 15% SwStr% on 267 pitches so far. So, it has been a good fastball.
I thought we might see some more effective velo than actual, but that’s not the case:
So he’s below 94 on average in both actual and effective. So how has this fastball daddy gotten so many whiffs?
I have a feeling it has something to do with everybody else’s favorite fastball stat that I have been intentionally ignoring for years now. And I’ve been ignoring it because:
It’s induced vertical break. I think that’s just the amount of vertical movement of the pitch. No pitch moves vertically unless it’s thrown submarine style, but some guys do a better job fighting gravity than others.
I do have this somewhere on the main dashboard. There’s a pitch movement tab. So we go there and sort by “Vertical Movement”. And isn’t that a better name than induced vertical break. That seems like one of those terms they just came up with cause it sounded really smart. There’s a saying from Einstein that comes to mind:
You’re not smart just cause you say something that sounds smart. True intelligence is in what Einstein says - the ability to make difficult things understandable. I know I wasn’t born yet, but yeah, I’m pretty sure Einstein was talking about me.
So here it is on the main dashboard. Many of you have been on this page more often than me, I am sure. But maybe it’s time for me to pay attention.
And we all should see the real reason I’m doing this today. I am trying to justify my bad advice. And I will look anywhere I need to in order to make myself look better!
So Alex Vesia’s four-seamer leads the league by a good margin in vertical movement. I’m actually just going to call it “vert”, because that is short and it sounds cool. I was a big Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater guy growing up, and I always like the vert skating rather than street. So I have an affinity for the word “vert”. So that’s what we’ll do.
The Statcast leaderboard for this is here. I think there’s a different way to do the calculation with some kind of weight for gravity or something - that’s the part I’ve never understood. So the other dashboard’s numbers will be different than mind, but the order of everything should still be the same.
To get to the freaking point. Ryan Gusto grades out extremely well in this.
And I could see that when watching him. I would like to now just shut the book and declare victory about my love for Ryan Gusto. But instead, I will take the next logical step and compare vert with swinging strike rate and xwOBA. If the two are correlated, then we have something. If they’re not, then none of this matters to me. So I’m a little bit nervous about what we might find here.
Sure enough, my instincts were right. There’s no correlation here between vertical movement and swinging strike rate.
So it’s not as simple as “MORE VERT GOOD”.
But I’m being overly simplistic in checking it this way. Certainly release point and velo matter a great deal. The proper way to study this would be to compare only pitches with similar velo and release points and then see how this vertical movement might play into it. But I don’t have time to do that right now.
So I can conclude this with some appeal to other people’s expertise. There are people who know what they’re doing who really like this stat. They love to see high marks in this regard. And there much be a reason for that. And while I think some of these guys get way too into the details and don’t see the forest for the trees, and that doesn’t mean I think they’re wrong about everything. There’s probably something here.
And actually, I’m not done yet. I took four-seam fastball movement data from right-handed pitchers and told Grok to tell me whose fastballs are most like Gusto’s. And I initially again wrote “please” in the prompt. I really have to stop doing that. The robots do not deserve our politeness.
Here’s the answer it gave me:
I don’t like seeing Bowden Francis and Dean Kremer there! But let’s look at the stats from the four-seamers coming from this group this year.
Mixed results, so… not very helpful. Schultz’s heater works well (although on 46 pitches), as does Cruz’s. But Francis and Kremer (the other two starters with bigger samples, mind you) have bad fastballs.
So yeah I did all this to learn pretty much nothing. What I’m going to do instead is just start Gusto again this weekend and then re-evaluate. He gets the Rangers next, a good matchup.
So I blew most of my team on all of that business when I should have just stuck with the checkmarks. But now we all know a little bit more, or a little bit less, about induced vertical break aka vert aka Bucky Lasek (my favorite skateboarder from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2).
Maybe that’s what I’ll call the stat. How does this dude’s fastball grade out on in Bucky Lasek!? What kind of Bucky you got on that four-seamer? Hey have you seen the Bucky on Alex Vesia’s fastball holy cow!!!
The Yankees blew up Emerson Hancock and the good times kept rolling for Trent Grisham. I can no longer deny Grisham. He is now slashing .300/.381/.690 with a 1.071 OPS, an 18.6% K%, a 10.6% BB%, a 17.7% Brl%, a .432 xwOBA, and a .289 xBA. The dude is seven in the league in fantasy points scored per plate appearance.
It’s firework city on the Statcast page.
Look at these changes from last year:
xBA: .203 → .287
xSLG: .389 → .632
xwOBA: .305 → .422
Brl%: 12.0% → 17.1%
K%: 27.3% → 18.6%
BB%: 10.5% → 11.0%
Avg EV: 90.6 → 92.1
Max EV: 107.7 → 109.4
Bat Speed: 70.4mph → 71.4mph
Fast Swing Rate: 5.7% → 13.4%
Astounding changes. It makes very little sense to me. But like I’ve always said - the world is a better place when Trent Grisham is murdering baseballs at the highest level.
You know who else has been a bit sneaky? Yoan Moncada. He double-barrled last night (nothing to show for it). And here’s what he’s at for the year:
.244/.393/.511, 25% K%, 17.9% BB%, 19.4% Brl%, 73% Cont%, 104.7 EV90
It’s just 56 PAs, so this could go south in a hurry. The 85% Z-Contact% is good though and he’s getting the ball in the air (32% GB%). And he’s walking a ton with that extremely low swing rate. He’s at a 40.7% Swing%, more than six points below the league average of 47%. I’d say he’s just someone to monitor for now.
And it’s not good to think about him right after what we just did with Trent Grisham. Both of these guys are known bad hitters. They have had all kinds of chances in their careers, and they’ve never been good. And 95% of the time, that means they’ll continue to not be good. You get yourself in trouble when you find one of the 5% and then immediately look at another guy in the same boat.
But I’m trying to throw out some names for you deep league bro’s. I think the daily notes (even just the automated part) are really good for that. You’ll see some real sneaky, low-owned names in the reports below - and that gives you the chance to dive into a bit of your own research to see what’s going on.
I do think Moncada is a fine deep points league add right now since he’s taking so many walks.
Well that was quite a ride, but I enjoyed it. Have a good Tuesday or whatever.
