Fun weekend for your boy. The weekends used to be a real grind with the young kids. It felt like I’d work 5x harder on weekends than during the week, but now the youngest is two and a half, so things are a breeze. My kids are so good. There is nothing like a loving family, man. My wife and I have such a great thing going, man. She’s such an amazing mother, my kids are so great. I’m very happy.
Every day is fun for me now. And now it’s Monday so I get to go back into baseball mode. So first, let’s talk about some more weekend standout players. And then I’m going to shift my attention to a big slate preview post for this nice Monday slate we have.
The man of the day on Sunday was Mick Abel. I know it was the Pirates, but he was impressive.
6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 9 K, 0 BB, 32.5 fantasy points
His numbers in AAA don’t make you believe much in that kind of ceiling:
8 GS, 2.53 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 26.6% K%, 9.9% BB%, .78 HR/9
Those are good numbers, but you would not expect him to come to the Majors and be a 28%+ K% guy with that. Last year in AAA:
24 GS, 109 IP, 6.46 ERA, 1.81 WHIP, 22.7% K%, 15.1% BB%
Massive command issues. This was a guy who was near the top of a lot of prospects list for awhile, but he fell off the table after that poor 2024 season.
Let’s look at the pitch mix.
Massive fastball numbers there. Seven whiffs on his 33 heaters with elite marks on the curveball as well. The fastball averaged 97.3, which was up from 95.6 in AAA. I would doubt he comes out again with that kind of velocity. His highest average of the minors league season has been 96.8, but he’s been under 96 in five of seven.
My guess is that he just had some extra adrenaline going for the big league debut and he took advantage of a poor lineup - and all of the variance went his way.
There’s also the problem that the Phillies don’t exactly have a rotation spot for him. He took Nola’s spot, but that’s not for long, as Nola will be back. But you would have to imagine he stays in the rotation for at least one more start, and that will likely be over the weekend against the Athletics in Sacramento.
His mound opponent yesterday Paul Skenes led the day in whiffs, by the way. He posted a 21.6% SwStr% in eight brilliant innings.
8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 9 K, 1 BB
And he earned his first career complete game, because the Pirates got beat 1-0 on the road. And then the Pirates thought it’d be a good idea to brag about the complete game with a Twitter post.
Andrew Abbott continues to look like a better strikeout pitcher than he has been. He went for a 16.7% SwStr% yesterday in five strong innings. For the year, he has a 30.3% K% with a 12.7% SwStr%. The SwStr% still does not support the K%, but it’s getting closer. He has double-digit whiffs in three straight outings. The four-seamer has been legitimately good (11.8% SwStr%, 52% Strike%), and the changeup has been very good (16.8% SwStr%).
The best part is that nobody has been able to square him up very often with a .245 xwOBA against.
But we talked last time about his soft schedule - and that continued yesterday as he faced a pretty tame Guardians lineup. His GB% is still one of the lowest in the league at 26.5%, and that’s going to catch up with him at some point. He’ll face some tougher offenses, and he’ll face them at home, and things will go south in some regard.
But improvements are improvements. He does look a lot better than in the past.
Shane Baz’s disaster continues. Remember that sweet start to the year he had?
First 3: 19 IP, 3 ER, 27 SO, 4 BB
Well that was a long time ago!
Last 6: 30 IP, 26 ER, 21 SO, 15 BB, 7 HR
That is a 7.80 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP with a 4.3% K-BB% over these last 30 innings. The SwStr% is down to 10.9%, and the Strike% is at 48.8%. So it’s not as though there is a silver lining here. He’s been very bad.
There has been some bad luck (24 HR/FB is very high, .313 BABIP is a touch high), but he’s not getting whiffs. His fastball isn’t great, and he doesn’t have a ton else behind it.
I don’t think Baz is a standard league fantasy pitcher, but you probably figured that out by now!
I just now realized that it appears that FanGraphs has blocked me from scraping their API. So that’s another wrench into the works. I used their API to get my Stuff+ data for the dashboards. So you won’t see any new Stuff+ marks unless I can figure that out. I also used it to make some personal reports for myself for stuff like SIERA. So I guess I’ll have to figure something else out. Why can’t we all just get along, you know? Do you think they blocked my IP because I’m white?
Another stinker from Spencer Schwellenbach, this time against the Red Sox. I mean it wasn’t that bad:
7 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 3 K, 1 BB
But the whiffs disappeared. That dropped his SwStr% to a still very strong 13.8% on the year. He still has a great 4.5% BB% and a 32.6% Ball%, and he’s still throwing six different pitches (at least 9% usage on all of them). So there’s a lot to like, but the results just haven’t been there. The big thing is the 20% K%. That’s low.
You can see a lot of similarities between this year and last year. The big difference seems to be the called strike rate. Last year he put up a 16.2% called strike rate, this year it’s down to 15.6%. But overall, I don’t see anything majorly different. His four-seamer has been even better this year than last.
I’d be trying to buy low on Schwelly. But maybe I’m just blinded by my love for him.
Tony Gonsolin had a bad outing against the Angels.
4 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 3 K, 5 BB, 2 HR
It turns out that life isn’t as easy when you don’t get to face the Marlins. This year:
Gonsolin vs. MIA: 38.6% K%, 4.5% BB%
Gonsolin vs. Not MIA: 17.5% K%, 17.5% BB%
The SwStr% is still strong at 13.8% (but again, that’s only because of those Marlins starts, he has a 6.6% SwStr% in the last two), but his ball rate is very high at 39%.
Luis L. Ortiz continues to look much-improved. He has been a whiff machine (14.5% SwStr%) this year. The early concern was the lack of command, but the ball rate has been dropping. He has a 15.4% SwStr% and a 35.4% Ball% in the last two starts.
For the season, he’s above a 15% K-BB%
→ 26.5% K%
→ 10.9% BB%
So there are some things to like in the profile. The four-seamer has been better this year. He still doesn’t earn enough strikes with it (46% Strike% on a four-seamer is bad, and he has a really poor 40% Ball% with it), but the whiffs are there to make up for some of that.
The slider has been deadly. The fastball has always been the thing holding him back. He has a live arm, and the slider has always been strong. He just hasn’t been able to set it up well enough with the four-seamer or sinker. But those pitches have improved this year, and he’s been delivering some decent results. If nothing else, he’s a reliable guy for 5-6 strikeouts per outing on your fantasy team. I like him.
I have to show you some of this Orioles pitching disaster. Here are the numbers on the guys who have made a start for them this year:
Of the six guys that have made at least four starts, five of them have an ERA above five. And Kyle GIbson put up a 16.77 ERA before being let go. Rough end to his career! Imagine if they hadn’t signed Tomoyuki Sugano. What a disaster, man. They do have Grayson Rodriguez and Kyle Bradish in the organization, but neither of them are healthy. And things keep looking worse and worse for G-Rod.
It’s been pretty profitable to play hitters against them, and I think it will continue to be so.
Some good news for Baltimore is that Jackson Holliday has been so much better this year. He’s now up to a .275/.338/.449 slash line with six homers. The biggest improvement has come in making contact.
→ 2024 K%: 33%
→ 2025 K%: 21%
→ 2024 Z-Contact%: 76%
→ 2024 Z-Contact%: 86%
He homered twice over the weekend and is now settled into the top of their lineup. He does only have two steals, but the attempt rate is still up there at 15%, so the steals should come. It’s very good to see the improvements he’s made. And I think that’s just how we should expect top prospects to perform. It takes time to adjust against Major League pitching. These kids have never seen anything like Major League pitching. The gap between the minors and Majors is huge. It takes repetition and time to get it together.
For fantasy purposes, that means we should follow the rule of not buying to these guys in their rookie year or right on their first call-up. And we should buy heavily into them in their second year. Or maybe even their second call-up in the case of Matt Shaw.
We’re seeing this currently with Nick Kurtz as well. You should give these guys at least 100-150 PAs before making a decision on them. And that’s tough to stomach. It’s tough to eat 4-5 weeks of Kurtz killing your fantasy team all in hopes that he’ll break through in month two or three when there’s no guarantee that will happen.
So I typically let other people grab the rookies, and then I try to buy low on them after those first several weeks of them being very bad. I just picked up Matt Shaw in my home league. Someone drafted him and obviously dropped him after the demotion. It’s quite possible his MLB struggles will continue throughout this year, but it’s a good time to buy-in and see if he can get over that adjustment period and start doing some of the things we think he’s capable of.
That will wrap it up for today, back later to break down this nice Monday slate.
