We can be glad that that series in Mexico is over. What a mess that is for the data guys. Here are the updated park factors from this year. Of course, two games aren’t going to tell you very much of anything about a park, but it’s still funny to see:
That sorted column is “home runs per batted ball”, so yeah 15% of the balls put in play went for a homer in those two games, and hitters hit .480 with a 1.059 SLG. Pretty ludicrous stuff. At some point, you have to #RespectTheData and just not play regular season games in these ridiculous parks. No more of this! And no more Field of Dreams games! And I am saying this knowing that most people don’t agree with me because they don’t watch the game of baseball through the lens of how this will all fit into a Tableau Dashboard, but this is my blog!
Nick Lodolo turned in another not-great outing against Oakland yesterday giving up three earned in five innings and then getting pulled after just 70 pitches.
He’s been bad in the box score over his last three. He didn’t even get whiffs in the previous two starts, but the good news is that yesterday was much better on that front - he went for a 22.9% SwStr% and generated 16 whiffs.
He’s allowed a whole mess load of hard contact this year, allowing 11 barrels in his last five starts. But if you know me, you know that doesn’t scare me as much as it scares other people. There’s plenty of randomness in that, and it shouldn’t surprise anybody if he goes on a streak of hardly allowing any barrels right away. I would so much rather have a pitcher that has allowed a bunch of hard contact in the last few starts with a high SwStr% as compared to the other way around. Stick with Lodolo.
Kevin Gausman had a 28-whiff start this weekend. That popped him into sixth place on the SwStr% leaderboard.
Hunter Greene has also been quite good overall this year after a few questionable starts at the beginning. He has that 32% K% and 9% BB% which will work just fine for him.
Another stand-out name this year has been Josiah Gray. He beat the Pirates yesterday and has turned in five really good outings in a row now after getting beat up in his first start of the year.
That’s three starts in a row without a homer or a barrel allowed, and he’s racked up 41 whiffs and 18 strikeouts in that time.
He’s been another one of these guys really relying on his breaking stuff, but it’s very much noteworthy that his fastball continues to work for him with that 13.5% SwStr% and no homers allowed.
The reverse of what I said about Lodolo is also true, of course. Just because Gray has gone three starts without a barrel allowed doesn’t we can be confident he won’t give up a high barrel rate moving forward. But it’s good to know that he has quite good stuff and can get whiffs at a high rate, he should be picked up in most leagues given the current state of pitching.
I’ve been taking plenty of questions about Drew Smyly in the DMs since people are scrambling for pitching. I typically just ignore Smyly when he goes on these runs of pitching very well, but maybe that’s the wrong approach at this point. Here is the Cubs SP situation so far this year:
It’s incredibly hard for me to look at a 19.1% K-BB% over a month of pitching and then say something negative, so I guess you can start the guy with some level of confidence right now. Last season he wasn’t bad by any means with a 4.18 xFIP and a 1.19 WHIP. He’s controlled the walks marvelously (5.8% last year, 5.5% this year) - and that helps a lot. The K% is up to 24.5% this year, but maybe it’s a little tough to believe that with 21.4% in 2021 and 20.4% in 2022. The 12.7% SwStr% is above average though, so if that keeps up I suppose 24% is believable.
You’re definitely starting Smyly this week in a two-start week, so you can go stream him in if he’s available right now - just don’t get too rlieant on him being in your fantasy team’s rotation come July - he’s not been able to exceed 130 innings since 2016 and he’s almost 34 years old now.
Jonah Heim continues to assault the ball with two more barrels yesterday. He now has a 14% Brl% and a 16% K%. That’s quite impressive, and it comes across a moderate sample size of 88 PA.
Only 16 hitters have a Brl% within 3 points of their K%:
Heim is one of them. I’m starting to believe it! He should 100% be started at catcher in every single league out there, so go ahead and make that happen.
Heim’s teammates Josh Jung also deserves a shout. He has six homers now with a 12.3% Brl%. Unlike Heim, however, he’s still whiffing (66% Contact%) and striking out (32%) a ton. If we just look at the last few weeks, he’s still whiffing (65% Contact%) and striking out (40%) a ton. That’s called a sell-high, folks.
Keibert Ruiz has also improved a bit this year, and you’ll see his name throughout the notes.
But that’s all the time we have for today, enjoy the rest of the post!
