MLB Daily Notes - May 22nd
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Quite a day in Pittsburgh for your boy. I worked in an office and did office stuff for eight hours, eight whole hours! Unbelievable resilience and strength from me.
And then brutal, grueling day of sitting and typing and talking was done, five of my high school buddies that still live around Pittsburgh came down and we all got some beers and went to the Pirate game - which ended up being probably the best game of the year when it was all said and done.
Oneil Cruz hit the two hardest hit balls of the season and added in a 116 as well, with the 121.5 coming as a two-out game-tying double in the bottom of the ninth off of Doval. That was incredible.
He’s now up to a .740 OPS with a pretty strong .261 batting average and an 18.4% Brl%, but yeah the K% is still up there at 34%.
The personal highlight of the night was Matt Chapman’s seventh inning homer, a rare barreled homer for the guy, which I caught. I bought seats for us all right by those bushes on Monday night thinking we could possibly get some homer action and that dinger came right to me. There’s a video of it here, I’m wearing the blue shirt because I’m afraid of conformity and glasses because I packed all left-eye contacts. Here’s me looking really sheepish with a very sore hand.
It hurt real bad, but I think I avoided any injury.
So anyways, fantastic day in the city but I’m ready to get back home to the family. Although I don’t have the baseball to give my kids because I immediately gave it to a kid sitting a couple rows above us. I have always told myself I’d do that if I ever caught a ball, so I came through… for myself.
Pitcher Review
Bryan Woo was the man of the day generating 16 whiffs across six scoreless innings with 7 strikeouts and no walks. He now has a 15.6% SwStr% with a 27% K% and a 3.6% BB% on the year. He’s pitching fantastically. Remember that he’s fastball-crazy with 51% four-seamer and 23% sinker usage, but it’s worked just fine so far in his young career.
Cal Quantrill has really taken a step forward this year, although after the last two seasons there wasn’t any room for him to step backward. Six strong innings with 17 whiffs and eight strikeouts against the Athletics last night, and that brings his season K% to 19% and BB% to 9%, so still not good - but maybe not a total and complete abomination to attack with hitters at all costs.
Casey Mize only needed 52 pitches to give up nine hits and six earnies, although the 15.4% SwStr% and 46.2% Strike% weren’t horrible numbers. Mize just isn’t a fantasy pitcher and every time we start thinking maybe he is, he proves he’s not.
Clarke Schmidt’s good run came to an end, but not in a horrible way. 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 6 K, BB. Still a nice 15% SwStr% and 50% Strike%, but the inefficiency came back as he needed 100 pitches for those five innings. He’s still a good 12-team option, but he has benefited from some soft matchups recently.
Charlie Morton showed he can still get some strikeouts, sitting down eight Cubs by the K last night. He was wild though with a 43% Ball% and four walks, so that cost him a shot at the sixth inning (5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 8 K, 4 BB).
Garrett Crochet saw the SwStr% drop to 11.8%, one of his worst efforts of the year, but he still didn’t hurt anybody with six scoreless innings on two hits and a 4:1 K:BB.
Robert Gasser seems like an Andrew Abbott type to me. A lefty without fantastic velocity or raw stuff that got a ton of strikeouts in the minor leagues but just won’t see that happen in the Majors. He did not strike out a single batter in six innings (80 pitches) and gave up 10 hits, but limited the run damage with just four earned runs.
Javier Assad still only gave up two earned runs but everything else was a disaster. A 5.9% SwStr%, 38.2% Strike%, 47.1% Ball%, and a 4:5 K:BB.
Hitter Review
Plenty of double barrel action last night in addition to the triple barrel game we saw from Oneil Cruz.
Bobby Witt Jr. hit his sixth and seventh homers of the year, a welcome sight as he hadn’t been hitting many long balls since that incredibly hot start to the year.
Byron Buxton showed us that he can still swing the bat. He quietly came back from the IL and raised his season OPS to .739 and season Brl% to 7.1%. The 32% K% and 41% hard hit rate suggest he’s not the hitter he once was, but maybe he’s shaking off some of the rust and injury stuff and will go on a decent run now, there’s still no denying the talent and he’s still just 30 years old (although with all of the injuries in the past that’s probably a pretty old 30).
Vinnie Pasquantino has had a bit of a weird season. The .230/.307/.412 slash line is bad but the 10.9% Brl% and 12.5% K% is exciting. He’s a Statcast page stud:
He’s also pulling the ball way more than before (46% to 40%) and the xSLG is way, way higher than the actual up at .514. So there should be some good days ahead for Pasquantino, you can call him a buy-low option.
Ezequiel Tovar… we might have to start calling him a young Javier Baez. One thing you have to give him social credit for is that he does not discriminate. Pitches down the middle, pitches on the corners, pitches four feet out of the strike zone, he loves them all equally.
His 44% Chase% is second highest in the league (to Michael Harris II), and his 62% overall Swing% is first in the league. He loves to swing. He has slightly below average bat speed and a low 66% Contact% which pushes the K% up (29% right now), but given the fact that he’s almost never taking a strike could end up limiting the strikeouts even with the low contact rate. But you’ll get plenty of bad contact from him when he’s making contact with those pitches he shouldn’t be swinging at. So he’ll be all over the place this year and probably in the future, but it turned into a nice game yesterday with two dingers. The 8.2% Brl% on the season is decent, especially for a Coors bat with speed. I think he’s a 15-team guy easily, and with some slight improvements to the K% and some nice warm Coors game, he could be a top-12 shortstop for the rest of the season, I don’t think that’s crazy.
And now I have to wrap it up. Things will be back to normal here and the notes will be a bit more detailed again starting tomorrow once I’m back in the basement.
