So German Marquez is at the top of some leaderboards today. He led the day with a 16.5% SwStr% against the Phillies. I guess Philadelphia just got all of the hits out of their bats in those first three games. But they still won the game 2-0 to push the Rockies to 8-42. That’s a .160 winning percentage. 16%. They’re on pace for 26 wins. That is remarkable.
If you look at their pythagorean expected record, they’re much better at 11-39. That’s a 36-win pace. I am pretty sure that I would not have thought that an 8-42 start to a season was even possible. If you asked me like how many games a AA team would win in the Majors in a 50-game sample, I’m sure I would have guessed at least 10.
I’m getting older and more set in my ways, but this is opening my mind a bit. More things are possible than you think, kids.
I don’t know what got into Marquez, but he threw 34 curveballs and got 13 whiffs. So that’s cool for him. I won’t soon forget what he did in the second half of the 2018 season.
It really looked like Marquez had found a way to beat Coors. He was a legitimate MLB ace for those three months. And that had us drafting him pretty aggressively in 2019.
And that’s probably why I still remember this. Because I drafted him in 2019, and it did not work out for me. I don’t have much of a memory, but things like this really stand out to me. If there are two things I remember about 2018
This German Marquez run
The birth of my first child
The most fantasy relevant thing that happened on the pitching front yesterday was clearly Tanner Bibee finally getting a good result. And it was a very good result.
7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 8 K, 1 BB, 14.6% SwStr%, 37.5% Ball%
That dropped his ERA down to 3.57. He had not been very good prior to this. He had a few decent outings, he went seven innings with one run allowed a couple of times recently, but the strikeouts weren’t there in those starts to really be convincing. This was his first time above 25 fantasy points.
The problem/question with Bibee has always been about the fastball. He has shown great secondaries in his career, but the fastball has been shakey and has been a cause of holding him back.
The fastball was still bad last night (39% Strike%), but nobody took advantage and he racked up the outs and strikeouts with the sweeper, cutter, and changeup. He has changed his pitch mix a bit this year.
Tanner Bibee Pitch Mix 2024 → 2025
FF…. 43% → 32%
FC… 26% → 22%
CH… 18% → 13%
ST…… 7% → 15%
CU….. 6% → 3%
SI…….. 1% → 15%
So he has spread out the pitch usage. So far, you can’t really say that it’s worked super well. His 10.5% K-BB% is terrible. But he’s got that up to 16.5% over his last three starts.
Looking at the pitch mix, I’m just not sure where the whiffs and strikeouts are going to come from. Even over these last three, he has just an 11.4% SwStr%. The changeup gets whiffs (27% SwStr%), but he doesn’t love that pitch with just a 12.5% usage. The main pitches are the four-seamer, cutter, sweeper, and sinker, and none of those seem like hard pitches to make contact with.
I still think Bibee has a decent floor. He’s been healthy, and he usually isn’t out there getting tanked. The deep pitch mix and all of the fastball variations should keep hitters off balance, but I’m not really seeing much of a strikeout rate from him - and that caps the ceiling significantly.
Pretty wild start from Tyler Anderson.
4.2 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 0 K, 6 BB
The old 0:6 K:BB! But whatever, shame on you if you trusted Tyler Anderson.
AJ Smith-Shawver’s run of good starts came to an abrupt end against the Nationals.
3 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 1 K, 3 BB, 2 whiffs
It was pretty clear to me that he wasn’t actually going to stay good for long. But I don’t think he’s quite that bad.
The 12.5% SwStr% and 37% Ball% aren’t good, but it doesn’t make him look like a guy who can’t hang around in an MLB rotation.
There’s good velo on the fastball and the splitter can get whiffs. This is a good application of the rule to never trust a splitter. Live by the splitter, die by the splitter. He’ll have good starts, but he’ll have bad starts - and he’ll probably have a little more bad than good. But he’s still young and getting experience and he could very well develop into a legitimate MLB starter. I just don’t want to trust him on a fantasy team right now.
Here’s the list of the SPs throwing the most splitters. By raw pitch count instead of by usage.
Kevin Gausman
Nathan Eovaldi
Yoshinobu Yamamoto
Tyler Mahle
Shota Imanaga
AJ Smith-Shawver
Paul Skenes (although this is sometimes called a sinker)
Tomoyuki Sugano
Zack Litell
Bowden Francis
Roki Sasaki
Taj Bradley
Mitchell Parker
Cal Quantrill
Casey Mize
It does seem like Yamamoto and Imanaga have mastered the splitter - because they’ve both been quite consistent since debuting. They both have very low walk rates, which is usually the struggle with splitter bro’s. It would be interesting to know if the Japanese guys throw it differently. They certainly seem to throw it more over there. Every Japanese pitcher that comes over seems to me to feature a splitter. Difference of culture, I guess.
So if we could real racial with it - we could say that you shouldn’t trust a freaking AMERICAN splitter.
Taylor Ward, what an explosion
He bottomed out around May 3rd. And since then:
.301/.350/.740, .301 xBA, .439 xwOBA
He ranks #7 in xwOBA in the league since that date.
Lots of Juan Soto hate going on recently. And it’s pushing me into actually being more and more of a Mets fan. Or at least a Mets sympathist. Kinda funny that could slash .211/.365/.386 like Soto has along with the elite .504 xwOBA.
But anyways, Taylor Ward was one of my money matchups yesterday, so I looked pretty sweet when he hit that grand slam. Money matchups has been pretty… money, so far.
Some unlucky hitters of May:
Buy-low windows open on:
→ Bryan Reynolds
→ Wyatt Langford
→ Matt Chapman
→ Christian Walker
→ Brenton Doyle
In the case of Reynolds and Doyle, you do have the motivation factor. I usually won’t consider something like that. But it would be pretty tough to put in full effort on such a bad team, especially since neither guy is playing for a contract any time soon. But we probably shouldn’t consider that.
If your job is being a professional baseball player, all you’ve ever done is play baseball. It’s not like your mind is on something else, I wouldn’t think. I mean it’s a case-by-case basis, surely, but I doubt you truly see guys mailing it in too often.
I studied this once.
Hitter Motivation: Do Hitters Perform Worse on Bad Teams?
The way I did it was to find the really bad teams in recent history and then compare their player’s performances in those seasons between September and the rest of the season. You would think that a guy on a 100-loss team would be pretty anxious for the season to end come September and would kinda stop trying for at least the last few weeks.
And I found that there was a very slight reduction in performance at the end of the year, but nothing significant. Like a 2% difference.
How about your LUCKY hitters.
Freddie Freeman’s wOBA vs. xwOBA graph just for fun:
One interesting question might: should you sell high on Pete Crow-Armstrong in a redraft league? And the answer is… maybe. Let’s break his season down into clumps of 50(ish) PAs.
First 50: .200 xBA, .255 xwOBA, 23% K%, 7.7% BB%, 0% Brl%
Second 50: .270 xBA, .348 xwOBA, 26% K%, 4% BB%, 14.3% Brl%
Third 50: .317 xBA, .470 xwOBA, 12.5% K%, 0% BB%, 24% Brl%
Last 60: .230 xBA, .302 xwOBA, 33% K%, 5% BB%, 13% Brl%
One thing that stands out in the numbers is how pitchers have adjusted to PCA. He’s an aggressive hitter. His 61% Swing% is third-highest in the league since last season (Tovar & Rafaela). So what do you do to a swing-heavy hitter who is torching everybody? Start throwing him fewer pitches in the zone.
And that is what the league has done:
On like April 25th the league was like hold up, this guy is dangerous, and they made an adjustment. By May 3rd, he had seen a ten-day window of a very low in-zone rate, and it’s continued ever since.
Before May 3: .271/.302/.550, 20% K%, 78% Cont%, .266 xBA, .359 xwOBA
Since May 3: .294/.319/.559, 32% K%, 64% Cont%, .230 xBA, .347 xwOBA
The power production has not gone away. He’s actually slugging even higher since the change, but he has been somewhat lucky, and it’s hard to imagine a guy slugging above .500 with a 32% K%. I’d believe that maybe someone like Stanton or Judge or Ohtani could do that since they’re usually absolutely crushing the ball, but not a guy like PCA. He has made power improvements, no doubt, but he’s still an average raw power guy at best.
Let’s add swing rate to this plot:
So that’s not good. His swing rate has actually gone UP since he started seeing fewer strikes. It’d be great to see the orange line following the blue line downward. That would mean he’s onto what pitchers are doing and isn’t putting up with their junk. But he’s swinging just as much even while getting fewer pitches to hit.
He’s survived it so far, but I don’t think it will sustain for long unless this orange line drops down. If nothing else, he will be very prone to slumps.
All of that to say that I think you actually should try to sell high on PCA. There’s little doubt that somebody in your league values him as a top-20 hitter, and I’d love to cash in on that if I could.
Different story for dynasty/keeper leagues, of course.
While I have this plot handy, let’s do Juan Soto. And the plot is Mets colors anyway, how providential!
There’s been a lot of talk about Soto’s attitude and all that business. He has not been swinging the bat lately, and he took 15 straight pitches or something at one point this week.
And of course, everything you do in The Big Apple is magnified - especially in your first year of a record-breaking contract. Do I believe Soto hates his life and is being super petty and disinterested? Not really!
Let’s check out the swing scatter. For the season:
We see our two featured hitters at the extremes. PCA is swinging at everything. Soto is swinging at nothing. Both guys seperate themselves in completely opposite ways. This section of the daily notes is like poetry right now.
Now let’s check May:
It’s an 11% Chase% and a 53% zone swing rate. Only one hitter has swung less in the zone this month - and that is Isaac Paredes.
Not swinging and not inherently a good or bad thing. It all depends on what you’re trying to do. If you want to get on base a ton - don’t swing. If you want to rack up dingers and RBIs and base hits - swing.
The perfect hitter would have a 0% chase% and a pretty high zone-swing%. The closest we have to perfection is Kyle Tucker. He has a 72% Zone-Swing% and a 17% Chase%. Incredibly impressive. Other standouts
→ Gleyber Torres: 67% Z-Swing%, 17% Chase%
→ George Springer: 66%, 17%
→ Anthony Volpe: 65%, 18.5%
→ Matt Chapman: 65%, 19%
→ Gavin Lux: 65%, 18%
→ Alex Bregman: 63%, 19%
It seems like mostly an old man’s game. There is no replacement for experience. It’s the Malcolm Gladwell 10,000 hours idea. No matter how good you are at something, you’re never as good at it at the beginning as you will be after practicing it for a long time.
So that’s it, I’ve gotta get to work!
