Jacob deGrom had the standout start of the day on Memorial Day. And that’s not a good thing. He did not strikeout a single hitter in 5.2 innings, and his fastball velo bombed down to the second-lowest average of the season.
There’s some talk about a blister or something. Apparently he kept looking at his finger. We should be happy to find out that it’s just a blister. That’s a little scary though regardless. Jacob deGrom getting zero strikeouts… just not something you ever see.
It was the first time he’s done that since 2021. He hasn’t even had a one strikeout game since then. We’ll keep an eye on the news surrounding that situation.
Ryne Nelson has been messing with fantasy baseball players for a long time now. He pitched well against the Pirates last night, although that’s not a hard thing to do.
6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 4 K, 0 BB, 10.7% SwStr%
Nelson was one of those STUFF FOOLERS a couple of years back. He graded out really well on Stuff+ models, and that had people buying into him as a breakout pick. But it never turned into anything. And then the people re-did their models and all of the sudden he wasn’t that good in Stuff+ again. So that’s a good story about how trustworthy Stuff+ can be. His fastball does usually grade out very well, and so far this year it has a very strong 53% Strike% on 368 pitches.
But it doesn’t get a ton of whiffs, and he’s throwing it a freaking ton this year at 61% usage. That has led to another meidocre K%. Although it is his highest of his career at 22%.
But his SwStr% is under 10%, and his ball rate isn’t that great at 35.4%. He’s also not a ground ball pitcher, and the history will have me viewing him as only a good-matchup streamer moving forward.
Gavin Williams took a step backward against the Dodgers. That wasn’t surprising. He didn’t have the command and the Dodgers made him pay for it. He put up a 39.4% Ball% and six walks - yikes! It wasn’t a total obliteration though as he managed to only give up four runs, and his SwStr% was pretty good at 13.8%. His second start this week is against the Angels - so that’s the one we’re looking forward to.
Williams continues to be a volatile SP. If he has the command on a given day, it can be very good - because he does have the strikeout stuff. But on days like last night against good teams when the command isn’t on - he’s going to punish your team’s WHIP.
Don’t look now, but Jack Kochanowicz has four straight starts with 4+ strikeouts and a 15% K% on the year! 15%!!!!! That’s up 67% from last year! In May, he has a 17% K%. But a 14% BB% and a 4.50 ERA. He’s not good.
But it does show us a lesson about outliers. What J-KOCH did with the strikeout rate last year was nearly unheard of. He threw 60 innings with a 9.4% K%. That was the worst K% in 50+ innings since at least 2019:
As a projection guy, I had to figure out (or at least I had to tell my model how to figure out) what to project for his K% this year. And 60 innings is not a “nothing” sample. But the order of the created universe and math all makes us know that we should not project a 9% K%. We should always regress values toward the league average, at least to some extent. Now, if Koch had gone 300+ innings with a 9% K%, then that’s a different story. But you are still heavily regressing stuff until you get to a couple hundred innings.
My model settled on 15% for this year after advanced tweaks and general regression. And look at that. We have a 15.3% K% on Koch for the year. So that’s a win.
Ryan Yarbrough is showing up again. That guy has found a way to hang around Major League teams, and now he’s working as a traditional starter for the Yankees. He went six strong innings last night against the Angels.
6 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 1 BB
He’s made four starts in May and has done this:
4 GS, 20 IP, 2.25 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, 25% K%, 6.6% BB%, 1.35 HR/9
That is a bit interesting.
The trouble we have is that Yarbrough has been a 16-18% K% guy dating back to 2021.
You can see in that game log above that his matchups have been a cakewalk this month. But this still looks like someone we should check on. Has he made a change?
He is throwing more changeups and more cutters this year.
The sinker is being used about four points less. Not a huge change, but yeah - four pitches being used above 20% of the time with a sweeper that gets a good number of whiffs does make us believe in a little bit of a K% rise. His SwStr% is 12.3% for the year. That would suggest a 22% or so K%, so he’s a bit above that at 25%.
I’m not buying into Yarbrough, but there are some real changes in the pitch mix right now, and he’s getting through 5-6 innings now on a good team - so that makes him someone to consider for streaming opportunities.
While we’re on the topic of K% increases, let’s see the pitchers who have most increased their K% this year, compared to last season.
The Andrew Abbott thing continues to confuse me. But that started moving in the other direction last time when he struck out two in 5.2 innings against the Cubs.
How about your SwStr% gainers:
I’ve written a good amount of Luis Ortiz already, so I don’t really see much to dive into from these lists. Just a lot of guys who were already studs last year becoming even more studly.
Royce Lewis barreled a couple of balls up yesterday, but he didn’t get a hit on either one. He is not having a good 2025 season:
66 PA, .148/.212/.230, 15% K%, 7.6% BB%, 1 HR, 0 SB (0 attempts)
Since Lewis returned from the IL in June last year:
389 PA, .211/.275/.399, 22% K%, 8.5% BB%, 16 HR, 0 SB (0 attempts)
He is not even hitting the ball hard this year with a 102.8 EV90. His 10.4% Brl% is better than average but still not very good. His xwOBA is awful at .291. He’s been really bad.
The .149 BABIP should come up, but still, it’s just a .218 xBA. He is either not healthy or just not good. I’m not sure you can really start the guy in a standard league right now.
Let’s check on the median launch angle vs. 90th percentile EV plot.
The sweet spot here, of course, would be towards the upper-right of the plot. That’s kind of the rule when making scatter plots - make the really good outcomes go towards the upper-right. Nobody is super close to the top right corner of the plot. The guys that are closest:
Kyle Schwarber
Corbin Carroll
Aaron Judge
Shohei Ohtani
Jake Burger
Byron Buxton
Matt Olson
Wilyer Abreu
Bobby Witt Jr.
The guys who just need to lift the ball more to be power studs:
Oneil Cruz
Vlad Guerrero Jr.
James Wood
Yandy Diaz
Jarren Duran
Manny Machado
Junior Caminero
Fernando Tatis Jr.
Elly De La Cruz
Christian Yelich
Most of the guys on that list are not a surprise. That’s a list of hitters who have had trouble lifting the ball in the past.
And maybe it’s not even right to say “have had trouble”, because it’s not guaranteed that they even want to lift the ball. Maybe they’re just fine with scorching grounders and line drives - or maybe that’s just what the pitchers are giving them and they’re happy to take it. I don’t know.
I have an easier time believing that kind of approach from a veteran like Christian Yelich or Yandy Diaz or Vlad, but with young power studs like Junior Caminero and James Wood, you’d have to think they’re working on trying to lift the ball more when they can.
I think Caminero is a buy-low right now if you can pull it off. If he can even get the ball in the air a little bit more, that swing speed will play into a bunch of homers. But it’s not a guarantee that it can happen. His EV90 overall is elite at 109.4. But on fly balls, it drops to 105.1. Yikes! Does that mean his swing path plays better into line drives and ground balls or something?
That did inspire me to make this new tab on the dashboard just now. It’s called “EV90 By Type”. Here’s Caminero:
He murders his ground balls and line drives, but when it comes to fly balls - he’s mediocre. That’s interesting. As I alluded to above, I’m sure the bat path tracking stuff could explain some of this. But I’m not familiar with that data yet and I don’t really care that much. But somebody can go after it and tag me, you will get a retweet on it.
Caminero has the same problem that Vlad has. That’s probably the best comp for him. Vlad is #2 in the league in EV90 on ground balls at 111.3.
But if you lookat the fly_ball column, he’s down there at 105. Same with Michael Harris and Yandy Diaz, and then we see Caminero there.
So this is a good lesson on exit velocity data. You should filter by batted ball type if you have enough data to do so and if you’re trying to figure out which guys can hit for power.
Let’s move on to Tuesday, I will talk to you later in a slate preview!
