Bowden Francis had a great start yesterday. He has turned his season around of late.
5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 6 K, 1 BB, 16% SwStr%, 33.3% Ball%
He matched his season best in strikeouts, and he’s had double-digit whiffs in his last three.
The key for him yesterday was keeping the ball in the yard. He has given up the highest HR/9 in the league this year. Any time you’re leading the league in that stat, you’re almost surely having some bad luck. Francis’ HR/FB is still up at 28% even after keeping them all in the yard last night.

Remember the second half that Francis had last year?
10 GS, 67 IP, 1.75 ERA, 0.63 WHIP, 24.2% K%, 4.1% BB%, 1.2 HR/9
There was all kinds of luck that went into that, and most people weren’t too interested in drafting Francis this year.
But at the beginning of this year, it had flipped the whole way around to where he was performing in an unsustainbly bad way.
The key change for him this year, I think, is the four-seamer performance. Last year, he posted a 55% Strike% on the pitch. This year, that number is down to 49%. This month (May 2025), it’s at 50%. That’s improvement.
The other thing is that hitters have punished his splitter this year. Last year, it was a nearly unhittable pitch (.201 xwOBA, .169 SLG). This year, it’s been awful (.397 xwOBA, .566 SLG). But he has cleaned that up as well with a .226 xwOBA and a .421 SLG allowed on the pitch in his last four starts.
Francis might be entering “streamer” territory. He’s also an interesting DFS play in the short term, because as we saw last night, his price has really bottomed out.
Let’s take a look at Spencer Strider. He was a bit better last night but still inefficient.
4.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 4 BB
The thing we’ve been talking about is the fastball velocity. He’s averaged just 95.2 on the pitch this year. He was at 98.2 in 2022 and 97.2 in 2023.
I think he’ll get back to the 96-97 range before long. And 95 isn’t bad velo, by any means. The bigger problem is that he hasn’t commanded the pitch nearly as well with a 34% Ball%. And it’s turned in just an 8.1% SwStr%.
Strider’s success has primarily come from fastball dominance. So any decrease in the quality of that fastball is going to cost him. But what do you do? I doubt you can trade him right now for a great price, so I think you just hold on and hope that he rounds into shape as we move forward.
Cade Horton qualbanged against the Rockies and had a nice 6:1 K:BB. So he passed the league’s easiest test, which is good news. Let’s check on the pitch mix:
The first number that my eyes go to is the SwStr% on the fastball. And it is bad. A 4.3% SwStr% on 163 pitches is a very bad sign, and he’s not making up for it with a super low Ball%.
So he’s down there with Buehler and Berrios in that Senzatela territory. Scary stuff. The sweeper has been decent though with a 17.3% SwStr% and a 45% Strike%. Neither of those numbers are great, but they are fine. The sweper has been hit in the air a ton (52%) and that has led to a .600 SLG.
I don’t see much to like here. I think Horton is a lower strikeout, high fly ball rate pitcher. And that’s a bad mixture.
The big names pitched well:
→ Rodon: 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 10 K, 0 BB
→ Webb: 6 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 10 K, 1 BB
→ Brown: 6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 8 K, 0 BB
I guess Webb’s result wasn’t superb with those seven hits allowed, but the ten strikeouts were a nice surprise. His season K% is up to 28%, way ihgher than we usually get from Webb (20.5% last year).
Rodon is on one of his runs where he looks like a total stud. This start was a cake matchup with the Angels, but you can’t compalin at all abuot what the guy has done since April 18th:
1.27 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, 32.5% K%, 7.3% BB%, 0.54 HR/9
Sometimes I do think it’s useful to forgive every SP their first 2-3 starts. WIt’s okay sometimes to erase the first two weeks of thes eason and then check the SP leaderboard. Guys are rstill getting going, weather is super weird, and there’s just a lot of extra randomness and business in those first couple of weeks. So let’s chop off the first two weeks and start at April 10th. We’ll go to five starts minimum and sort by JA ERA, which is now the most important baseball statistic ever made.

Let’s show a screenshot of the lower-owned SPs on this list.
Ben Brown is interesting to me. He has gotten smacked in two straight starts, but the underlying numbers are still pretty interesting. The 13.5% SwStr% and 31.9% Ball% are very good, and the JA ERA likes him. He’s given up a .382 BABIP and a 62% LOB%. Very, very bad luck. I have him on my home league team and can’t seem to get myself to cut him.
Let’s look at some of these bad luck SPs.
The SPs getting torched by BABIP:
And the lowest LOB%:
The guys on both lists:
You still have to be intelligent about this. Neither BABIP nor LOB% are completely out of the pitcher’s control. Bad pitchers will usually put up bad LOB%, because they just aren’t good at getting hitters out ina ny situation. The two names that really stand out here are Cole Ragans and Ben Brown. Because both guys have strikeout stuff and at least decent command. They should improve in these two metrics.
Expanding it a bit to find a few more bad luck SPs to buy low on:
E-Rod is hurt, so you don’t have to worry about him. Houck is bad, so I wouldn’t be looking him in standard leagues either. But Nola is a decent buy-low here, and Dobbins could be a sneaky add for the rest of the season as long as he stays in the Red Sox rotation.
One more SP to mention - Richard Fitts. He got back from IL last night, even though that wasn’t the original plan. He had the rehab cut short so he could throw a few innings for Boston last night. He threw just 44 pitches, so that sets him up for 60-70 next time, and that’s not something you want to use a fantasy start on.
His season K-BB% is bad at 11%, but he’s thrown just 293 pitches so it’s hard to judge. The good news is the 13% SwStr% and 30.7% Ball%. His fastball has been good, and he has a decent slider/sweeper/curve trio behind it. I’m watching him closely as we move forward.
I talked about German Marquez last week becaues he finally had a non-awful start. And he had a pretty good one last night as well. His last two:
13 IP, 11 H, 3 ER, 11 K, 3 BB, 16% SwStr%, 32.5% Ball%
This curveball has been electric in the last two starts with a 31.8% SwStr% and 56% Strike%. I picked a random video of Marquez getting a whiff on his curveball last night, and it happens to make PCA look really stupid and dumb so HAH:
It looks like most of Marquez’ good marks on the curveball were courtesy of PCA. He was flummoxed last night.
Marquez stuck him out twice on the curveball and got four whiffs from him.
PCA chases a lot of bad pitches, but that’s beside the point. The thing I’m trying to say is that maybe we shouldn’t stack hitters all the time against Marquez. Nobody should add him to a fantasy team, but maybe he’s good enough to warrant the not-auto-stack-against treatment.
Jose Altuve double-donged last night in a good matchup with JP Sears and the A’s bullpen. He has been much, much better of late.
Let’s check the time splits on him, using that Hit Time Split tab on the main dashboard, which I’ve been using a lot lately.
Last 30:
Last 15:
Last 7:
Lots more zone contact of late, and much better quality of contact as well. He’s 10th in xwOBA OE in the last seven:
Really useful dashboard there, and I encourage you all to check it out. Let’s check lower-owned hitters in xwOBA OE over the last 30 days:
So no slow-downs from guys like Kyle Stowers, Ryan O’Hearn, and Daniel Schneemann. And I kind of expected all three of those guys to cool down.
How about a look at Matt Shaw since his return to the bigs.
34 PA, .355/.412/.516, 20.6% K%, 8.8% BB%, 4.2% Brl%, .294 xBA, .356 xwOBA, 92% Z-Contact%, 100.5 EV90, 38% GB%, .458 BABIP
He is making a lot of contact and hitting a ton of line drives (38% LD% - super high), but he has not hit the ball very hard and the BABIP is inflated. He’s added three steals (two last night), and that has made him a very useful fantasy bat.
The exit velocity is a bit concerning. His EV90 is under 101 for the year on 64 balls in play. He posted a 105.5 EV90 on his 79 AAA balls in play, so that’s encouraging.
But his bat speed in the Majors has been really low. He’s down there around Nico Hoerner territory.
I’m not sure how much that means. Bat speed isn’t the most useful stat in terms of predicting outcomes. His bat speed is higher than Taylor Ward, and he’s had no trouble hitting homers this year. So this is far from some death sentence on his power potential, and Shaw had no trouble hitting dingers in the minors.
But maybe we’re viewing him as more of a batting average + steals guy in fantasy leagues than a 20-homer threat right out of the chute here. Either way, he has really improved in making contact and the launch angle stuff has looked fantastic. And since he’s very willing to steal bags, I think he’s a good add in 12-teamers or deeper.
One more thing! Kody Clemens. This is Roger Clemens’ son. He’s been around the Majors a good bit over the last four seasons. But it hasn’t been great:
463 PA, .213/.264/.411, .675 OPS, 26% K%, 5.8% BB%, 19 HR, 1 SB
But things are looking up right now. In 2025:
.268/.359/.607, .967 OPS, 26.6% K%, 9.4% BB%, 17.9% Brl%, .316 xBA, .442 xwOBA
The EV90 is there at 107.4. And that’s good. It would be kind of disappointing if Roger Clemens’ kid was a whimp.
It’s only 64 PAs, and the longer history still means a lot more than this short sample. But he swings hard and gets the ball into the air (33% GB%). So, if the K% can stay under control (under 27% or so), it’s believable that he can put up a decent home run total.
At the same time, this was a guy who was traded already this season. The Phillies shipped him to Minnesota for cash considerations. So nobody seems to really believe in him, and the track record shows you why. I wouldn’t spend any sort of resource to get Clemens. But if you need some dingers in a 15-team league or something like that, go for it.
