Let’s start with some good news. Lance McCullers Jr. went nuclear yesterday.
6 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 12 K, 1 BB, 17.6% SwStr%, 32.4% Ball%
That gives him 20 strikeouts in his last two starts. So he’s got that going again. The ERA is still a mess because of that disastrous second start he had (0.1 IP, 7 ER).
It’s very good to see McCullers getting a bunch of whiffs and strikeouts. That’s something he was able to do in his prime years, but it came with a bunch of walks and inefficiency. It would seem that he hasn’t fixed his lack of great command with a 12.1% BB% and 39% Ball% in his 18.1 innings. Let’s check on the pitch mix:
A six pitch mix, leading the charge with a slider at 33% usage. We’re always a bit wary of the guys leading their pitch mix with a non-fastball. But 34% usage isn’t out of control. The pitch, until yesterday, wasn’t very good with a 10.7% SwStr% and 43% Ball%.
Let’s just look at these last two starts:
So even in these two, the slider hasn’t generated a high SwStr%. The curveball has done a ton of damage with the 39.5% SwStr% and 68% Strike%. It has hardly been touched at all with a .004 xwOBA. That’s probably just one ball put in play hit weakly onto the ground or something like that. It’s a very good curveball - and that was always his best pitch.
It would seem to me that McCullers is one of these types like Max Meyer, Reese Olson, Ronel Blanco that we have talked a lot about. Good breaking stuff, but no good fastball to keep the results safe and consistent. I think you’ll have some very frustrating outings from McCullers and a poor WHIP. I’m not rushing out to add him. But at least we know that he’s capable of having the huge K outing when things are going well.
The nightmare season for Sandy Alcantara continues. It’s crazy how bad he’s been. I wouldn’t think even like some awful AA pitcher that got shoved into the Majors would do this bad. He has an 8.47 ERA in 51 innings. He’s given up at least four earned runs in eight of 11.
His K% is under 17%, his BB% is above 12%. His JA ERA is 4.65 and the WHIP+ is 2.47.
It’s all very, very bad and things are not getting any better. He got went for one whiff on 71 pitches yesterday. He has no command and no good pitches to throw. It’s not like a death knell for the rest of his career. He can probably get back going, but you can’t roster him in fantasy leagues right now.
Things got worse for Zac Gallen. He hasn’t been quite as bad as Sandy, but it’s ugly. Yesterday, against the Pirates:
5 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 6 R, 3 K, 3 BB, 12% SwStr%, 37% Ball%
And for the season:
12 GS, 66.2 IP, 5.53 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 22.6% K%, 11% BB%, 1.4 HR/9
These last four starts have been his worst work. He has failed against the Rockies and Pirates, both at home. So that’s tough to take. The JA ERA is up to 3.90 with a 2.14 WHIP+. Again, none of it is horribly terrible, I do think he’ll pitch better as we go forward, but he just does not have anything near the elite command he used to have - and that’s really what he relied heavily on in those years where he was good.
I’m not sure you cut Gallen in a deep league, but for standard leagues I think it’s fine to bail. The 11.3% SwStr% and 40% Ball%j ust aren’t going to work, and yeah it’s pretty concerning when you can’t even put up a good outing against the Rockies or Pirates.
Drew Rasmussen went six scoreless for the third consecutive start. His ERA is down to 2.33 with a 0.93 WHIP. It seems like there is a hard limit on his pitch count. He finished the sixth inning at 74 pitches and did not come out for the seventh. In the previous start he finished the sixth at 76 pitches.
So they don’t want him to start an innig if he’s over 70 pitches already, or something like that. That only really matters for fantasy if you’re in a quality start league, but even that hasn’t been an issue for him lately since he’s so, so efficient. He’s one of just nine SPs averaging less than five pitches per out recorded.
He has a low BABIP. And I would expect a low BABIP from him, but maybe not quite as low as it’s been.
He’s still filling it up with fastballs. He’s at 88% fastball usage. Maybe it’s not quite fair to call the cutter a fastball. Clearly, Rasmussen is getting it done with deception and great command.
The 21.6% K% and 10.6% SwStr% do make you nervous. I don’t think he’s a “two-something” ERA guy in reality. The JA ERA is 3.35. But I do think he should be pretty close to universally rostered because of the command. His WHIP is going to be very good - and he’s a tough guy to hit, so I think the ERA will be quite good at worst, even if the BABIP stuff does turn around.
Something weird happened with Jackson Jobe. He lost a bunch of velo:
And then the Detroit media was lighting it up because he didn’t talk to reporters after the game. I’m not sure if that’s a significant thing or if some reporter was just offended and being petty on Twitter (many such cases). But it’s possible that Jobe is hurt, or something. But he’s not a super relevant fantasy pitcher at this point, so I guess we don’t care too much about that.
Griffin Canning blew chunks against the White Sox.
3 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 5 R, 3 K, 4 BB
It wasn’t shocking to me that Canning would have a letdown outing even against a bad team. He’s been good this year, but not as good as the numbers really suggested. And now he’s on two pretty bad outings in a row with eight walks in 5.2 innings. I believe his previous start was cut short by rain, so maybe it’s not super fair tojudge him on that.
But he’s at just a 21.8% K% and a 10.9% BB%. That’s an 11% K-BB%, which is not the kind of thing you want to be on.
Cade Povich struck out nine, but otherwise had a very bad outing with eight hits and five runs given up. His 2025 profile:
The K% is up from what we saw last year, but the ball rate is bad, the GB% is low, and he’s gotten hit pretty hard. I don’t think Povich is much of a Major League starter. Just another case of a guy not having the fastball needed to hold his own at the highest level.
Noah Cameron is a magician or something. He has the largest ERA vs. JA ERA gap in the league now when you restrict to just 4+ starts.
ERA: 1.05
JA ERA: 4.52
SIERA: 4.71
FIP: 3.77
xFIP: 4.42
A .153 BABIP! That reminded me of the Pitcher BIP Analysis tab on I have on the main dashboard. I whipped this one up early last year, I think. It breaks down a pitcher’s balls in play allowed by the six categorizations that baseball savant gives us.
This also gives me the chance to show the batted ball classification plot again. That shows you in one image what these classifications means.
And then you can compare the pitcher’s performance with the league averages with the “benchmarks” table above.
Click here to see Cameron’s page.
To his credit, he’s generated a lot of soft contact. He’s given up just a 4% Brl% (league = 9%), a 7% solid (league = 6%), and a 20% flare% (league = 24%). Those are the three you want to avoid. He’s generated 24 unders (weak fly balls) and 23 topped (ground balls). You’d expect pretty good results on those types, but not quite to the extent that Cameron has gone.
He’s allowed a .042 AVG on his unders (league = .061) and a .087 average on his topped (league = .172).
But we’re probably going too deep on the guy. The 16.3% K%, 8.2% BB%, and 42.8% Strike% show you that he has not been fooling hitters or managing walks in a super great way, he has just avoided hard contact in an unsustainable way. I’d steer clear of the guy.
Pretty much everybody hates Juan Soto now, as far as I can see. Mets fans are mad about his lack of production, and every other fan is happy to see Soto struggle after signing the crazy contract.
Soto has a .745 OPS on the year with just eight homers. He has slashed .202/.333/.404 in May.
The good news for Mets people, and I guess the bad news for everybody else, is that he has been the unluckiest hitter in the league for the year:
The moving averages:
Soto will be fine, and you should probably see if you can buy low on him right now.
The unluckiest hitters of the last two weeks:
And that’ll wrap up the notes for today. I have an updated top 100 SPs coming out soon, I just need to finish writing it up.
But it’s a nice day to take off. Very short slate of games today, so I’m going to use today to get away from baseball a bit and get some other stuff done.
