New addition! I’ve incorporated the “xwOBA Over Expecation” stuff into the daily notes now. I wrote about what that is and how to use it here.
Do with this what you will. I do think it’s a better way of determining what hitters are “hot” right now. So these are the 15 hitters who have performed much better than expected in xwOBA when compared to what the expectation would be on the pitches they’ve seen:
I imagine you’ll see the big boys (Judge, Soto) on here most days. The consistent quality of contact you get from those guys keeps them above expectation pretty much always. But it will be fun to monitor it. The sneaky names to keep an eye on this weekend are probably Perez (see if he can finally bust out of his power outage, he’s been hitting really well), Beck (he’s been striking out a ton but crushing the ball when he gets to it - 20% Brl%), Torres, and Volpe.
The bottom 15:
The opposite of what I said about Judge and Soto applies here as well. The light-hitting guys of the league will be on here often. That’s just because they aren’t really able to hit even the best pitches very hard. But it’s interesting to see those two Braves names on the list (Albies & Riley).
It’s also seemingly a bad sign for Nick Kurtz. He has a zone contact rate of 59%. That’s egregiously bad. And pitchers are coming right at him (31% Ball% against, no walks). My long-term opinion on the guy has not changed, and it would not be surprising at all to see him make an adjustment and start hitting well by June or so. Typically, you’ll see a 100-PA or so adjustment period needed. So, if Kurtz gets dropped in a deep league, it’s not a bad idea to jump at him and just hope the adjustments are made. But this is just another reminder that MLB pitching is way, way different and better than AA-AAA pitching.
So I’m glad to have missed out on Kurtz… so far. The one guy I have been holding in both main leagues is Zebby Matthews. And that is looking more and more like a really dumb and ridiculous thing to have done. With the MiLB Statcast 2025 dashboard, we can see that the increased velocity has dissipated.
He started at 97 and now he’s lost a tick, and the numbers haven’t been nearly as good these last two outings.
Still a strong 29:7 K:BB on the year, but without that extra velo it’s a lot tougher to believe. I don’t have a … reason to believe.
Even if he does get called up soon, there’s no guarantee he’s any good. So I think I’ll cut my losses tomorrow and ditch him.
One guy who did get the call up and who looked very good was Gunnar Hoglund. The A’s gave him a start against the Marlins, and I’d say he’s earned another start or two.
6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 0 BB
The pitch mix:
That’s a lot of fastballs thrown under 95mph! Not great. The changeup was only used 9% of the time to lefties. It worked out well for him last night, but the Marlins matchup certainly helped. And I don’t like pitchers who are very dependent on mediocre fastballs. Next up would be the Mariners in Sacramento if he stays with the big league club. So that’s a decent matchup. But I don’t think I’d spend real resources to get him.
A lot of studs did stud things last night. There are no surprises at the top of the algo ranks. Skubal, Greene, Yamamoto, Ryan, and Woo. They all pitched great.
Grant Holmes was #5. It was good to see him have a good outing. And “good” is an understatement. He really ripped the Dodgers apart.
6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 9 K, 2 BB
It was his best start by many metrics:
Good to see, and it looks like his job in the rotation is pretty safe with Strider and Lopez out. The early splits on Holmes are pretty interesting:
vs. RHB: 20% K%, 13% BB%, 11% SwStr%, .401 xwOBA
vs. LHB: 30% K%, 14% BB%, 11.4% SwStr%, .287 xwOBA
Plenty of randomness in there this early in the season, but it’s always nice to have a right-handed pitcher with the ability to neutralize lefties.
Bryan Woo is really something to watch, man. Such a unique pitcher
6.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 8 K, 0 BB, 13.8% SwStr%, 59.8% Strike, 26% Ball%
The guy has command of the baseball that you don’t often see. He fills the zone up like nobody else. 59.1% of his pitches this year have been in the strike zone.
He throws the first pitch in the zone 68% of the time.
0-0 Zone Rate Leaders
Lugo 70.7%
Woo 68.0%
Mikolas 68.0%
Irvin 65.9%
Taillon 65.7%
That’s only a good number if you’re also a bit nasty. You can see that most of the names at the top of this list are pretty unimpressive pitchers when taking the full picture. But Woo is so unique and tough that it works out amazingly well for him.
That four-seamer is such a good pitch. His 18.5% SwStr% on the pitch leads baseball. There are only nine pitchers in baseball with four-seamers that have 12%+ SwStr% and sub-32% Ball%:
If you want to be a great pitcher, have a great four-seam fastball. Woo leads the league in efficiency (as measured by pitches per out).
SP Efficiency Leaders
Woo 4.62
Schwellenbach 4.79
Mize .4.80
Liberatore 4.85
Pivetta 4.92
Heaney 4.93
Shane Smith 4.95
Kochanowicz 4.98
Irvin 5.00
deGrom 5.01
A better way to use this leaderboard is probably to filter to guys who are also earning high strike rates. Five names qualify with a Strike% above 50% and a “POUT” below 5.25.
Woo is the man.
Two ninth-inning homers from Riley Greene last night. That brings his total to eight, and he has the SLG over .500 for the first time this year.
He was clearly a buy-low while he was struggling. The power is very real with him, and I do think the K% will trend downward toward the mid-20s, where we’ve typically known him to be.
Pete Crow-Armstrong also homered twice. He’s now hitting .271/.302/.550 with eight homers and eight steals. He joins Kyle Tucker and Oneil Cruz as the only hitters with 8+ homers and steals.
Fernando Tatis Jr. and Shohei Ohtani join the list if you go seven homers and seven steals. If you drop it to six, we get Jazz Chisholm (RIP) and Byron Buxton showing up.
And that will have to do it for today!
