MLB Daily Notes - May 31st
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
.
There’s a family on my street with eight kids (yes, they are Catholic), and this week the mother asked my wife if my wife could watch the three youngest so she could go help at her older kids’ school for the last day of school activities. And my wife said yes. So there are six kids running around my house right now, it’s a mad house. Amazingly gracious move from my wife to help out like that, shout out to her. As for the eight kids thing, it’s funny to me that typically people will react to that in a very negative fashion even though that kind of family size was not abnormal at all until like five minutes ago (aka like 75 years ago). I found this plot which is interesting:
The AVERAGE in 1800 was 7! And I’m assuming that still counts the woman that couldn’t have children and posted zeroes, meaning for every zero on average there was a lady going for 14. Crazy.
It obviously becomes tougher to give your kids the proper attention and provisions when you have more and more of them, but I’m not going to be one to look down on or criticize a married couple for populating the earth like that.
I do wonder if the Catholics will just breed their way to domination. Everybody is having fewer kids now, but Catholics and other religions would have to be slowing down slower, right? So over time you would expect the country to become more religious if the religious people are the ones having most of the children. But maybe we would have already seen signs of that since the contraception stuff has been in place since the 70’s (in terms of legality and widespread use). But now here I am on a baseball blog starting to talk about condoms and stuff, so I should probably wrap it up (pun!).
I think kids are great and I think responsible people should have as many kids as they can, and I love the Catholics. I just hope these three young papists-in-development don’t rip up my house too bad.
There wasn’t a ton of baseball yesterday with just eight games.
Pitcher Review
Ray Kerr led the day in whiffs with 15 while striking out seven, but other than that he was wild with a 41% Ball%, two walks, and he made it just 3.2 innings. This year he has an impressive 17.8% SwStr% on 281 pitches with a 49% Strike% and 34% Ball%, so that all looks pretty good. His Stuff+ on FanGraphs is 99.9 with pretty average marks on all of his pitches. So there are plenty of worse pitchers, but I don’t think Kerr is a fantasy add right now, his future in the rotation is certainly in question.
Carlos Rodon had another good start with six innings, three earned runs, five strikeouts, and one walk. The SwStr% was great at 18.4% and he kept the ball rate low as well at 33%. Good stuff there, his season SwStr% is now 12.6% with a 47% Strike% and 36% Ball%, so once again - he just looks like an average big league starter.
Nick Pivetta struck out nine in 5.1 innings with a 57.6% Strike%, great stuff there. He has missed some time with injury but overall has kept up that late 2023 breakout with a big 14.6% SwStr%, 51% Strike%, and 33% Ball% on a 26% K-BB%. He’s an ace, I suppose!
Spencer Arrighetti has been better than you might think this year with a 25.5% K%, but a bad 11.5% BB%. HE threw six scoreless innings against the Mariners last night with eight strikeouts. The Mariners just continue to bleed strikeouts it’s really wild.
Jack Flaherty might be a legitimate Cy Young candidate. 6.2 innings, one hit, no runs, nine strikeouts and one walk. That brought his K-BB% to 30.2%, which leads the league by two full points now. His 16.2% SwStr% and 34.5% ball% are great, and there hasn’t been a ton of good luck here either with the .320 BABIP. What a year.
I have felt worse and worse about Christian Scott every start since his second one, and last night didn’t help. He only gave up two runs in five innings, which you’ll take in real life, but the whiffs and strikes have just been mediocre overall now even with that great debut he made. I don’t think Scott is a 10-team pitcher now, but in 12-teamers or deeper you probably can wait a bit longer to see what happens, we’re talking about a 454 pitch sample size.
Corey Seager has just been going nuts.
This is a beautiful example of where the xwOBA signals to you that things are turning around:
We have all this space between the green and red lines there through late April and May, and then the red line finally caught up perfectly today. That plot should be in a museum somewhere.
Chistopher Morel also homered yesterday, and that was a long time coming. He has still been limiting strikeouts and hitting the ball very hard, but the results hadn’t come for a spell there.
He still has a nice 22% K%, 11% BB%, and 12.6% Brl% on the year with a 42% GB%. The only hitters in the league under a 25% K%, above a 10% BB%, and above a 12% Brl% are:
Juan Soto
Kyle Tucker
Gunnar Henderson
Christian Walker
Christopher Morel
Brandon Nimmo
Marcell Ozuna
Rafael Devers
So it should be a really amazing summer for Morel and I think you should try to acquire him now.
Some other hitters really under-performing in wOBA vs. xwOBA in May:
And the other side of that with the lucky hitters:
If you’ve ever wondered what the relationship between whiffs and strikeouts is, I can tell you. Here’s a plot of every pitcher outing this year where they got at least five whiffs, and how many strikeouts that came with:
The average is 0.44 strikeouts per whiff. So you’re pretty close to expecting one strikeout for every two whiffs.
Tomorrow and Sunday will be short days here and there definitely won’t be any extra stuff like the game previews, we’re heading out for vacation but things will get back to normal quick after I’m settled.
