MLB Daily Notes - May 4th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
It’s that Star Wars day today, May the Fourth. I am upset I even realized that when I looked at the calendar. I liked Star Wars a lot when I was a kid, but I was the absolute lamest kind of fan. I never even watched the original trilogy and was just really into the first three. My earliest memories of BLOGGING comes from that time of my life when I would read this dude who called himself “Super Shadow”, he claimed that he knew George Lucas and knew stuff about the script of Episode two. So in the months leading up to the release of that movie he would write these blogs talking about what will be in the movie. I remember being so lamely excited to find out that Yoda was going to be in a light sabre (saber?) fight.
Thinking back, probably that Super Shadow dude was a total fraud 600 pound dude in his mom’s basement… not unlike myself right now, although with some of the extra body weight. Went to the Wayback machine to see if I could find his blog but I have no idea what the URL even was. Did find this reddit post from someone who had this memory just like I just did six years ago. The Internet is great, man. I mean it’s ruining our younger generations and getting millions of people addicted to porn and unhealthy self-comparisons, but for me, it’s great. My Xanga was so lit.
There were a lot of pitching performances yesterday, that happens on a Friday. Nothing stands out over the top to me. There weren’t any true elite outings, but the top two:
Cal Quantrill vs. PIT: 6.1 IP, 0 R, 8 K, 2 BB
Dylan Cease vs. ARI: 6.2 IP, 1 ER, 8 K, 0 BB
Chris Paddack had a pretty good one in his own right.
It’s been a bumpy ride, and I suppose it will continue that way.
And man are the Pirates pathetic. That was just the fourth time in Quantrill’s career he went above 30 fantasy points, and the first time since 2022. He posted a 34.6% K% and 0% BB% yesterday compared to his career marks of 16.7% and 7.2%. The Pirates are one of the main teams to focus on streaming against right now.
Fantasy Points Scored Per Inning Pitched, Best Matchups
SEA 3.36
OAK 3.35
COL 3.34
CWS 3.31
CIN 3.14
PIT 3.12
LAA 2.99
STL 2.99
TB 2.97
BOS/DET 2.92
The guys that got lit up:
Cecconi vs. SD: 4.1 IP, 6 ER, 4 K, 2 BB
Quintana vs. TB: 2.3 IP, 10 H, 8 ER, 2 K, 1 BB
Bibee vs. LAA: 5 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 4 K, 1 BB
And the guys with 3+ walks:
Stroman (5), Hicks (4), Nola (4)
Overall a pretty boring night on the pitching side.
Brett Baty was the lone man to hit multiple dingers. Those were much needed homers for him. He came up as a big power threat but with a lot of strikeouts. And this year he’s not been striking out much but he had not been barreling the ball either. Now on the year:
.271/.340/.385, 3 HR, 5.2% Brl%, 17.9% K%
Still low on the power, but a double-doink night really does wonders for your SLG (he was at .304 yesterday).
Slugging percentage is such an underrated stat, it has gotten lost in the shuffle with all of the newer stats. Here are your SLGs above .570 (85 PA minimum):
Let’s look at the HR% vs. SB Attempt% Plot:
That dot by Abrams is Cedric Mullins. You can check it out yourself here.
Corey Seager is coming alive, and shows up on the MFQ today.
Salvador Perez hit a three-run bomb and now has his red line way below his blue line
This start to the year makes no sense for Perez. But I’m enjoying it as I took him in the ole home league. Only two other hitters have higher Brl% than K%
Juan Soto
Shohei Ohtani
I love those plots.
Lots of interesting SPs to watch today
Jared Jones vs. COL
Tyler Glasnow vs. ATL
Kevin Gausman vs. WSH
Brandon Pfaadt vs. SD
Christian Scott vs. TB
John Means vs. CIN
Should be a fun day, have a good one!
