Added something new last night, now there’s a form where you can go to request a player or topic for me to cover in the notes. I get a lot of specific questions on Twitter about players, so I figured this would be a good way to formalize things. You can submit a player or topic in the form below, no login is needed or anything you can do it completely anonymously:
Request Player/Topic For Me to Discuss
The pitchers of the day were Eduardo Rodriguez and Zach Eflin, pretty clearly. They both went for a near 40-burg using the DraftKings scoring system. These were not pitchers that were not highly regarded during draft season and those are the names we want to spend the most time on.
E-Rod appears to be in full bounce-back mode after a tumultuous few seasons. Last night he went eight scoreless innings against the Mets, striking out nine. For the year he has a 23.9% K% and a 4.9% BB%, which is a 19% K-BB% which COUNTS. He also has limited hard contact, which doesn’t mean a ton to me but I’ll throw it out there - he’s given up just a .255 xwOBA with a 4.3% Brl%, but he has allowed hitters to get the ball into the air with a 42% GB%. The bad news is a low 10.7% SwStr%, and some very poor Stuff+ numbers.
None of these pitches have been bad,b ut none of them have been great. If you’re a believer in the pitch modeling stuff, it would seem that E-Rod has gotten there more with his command (102 Location+) than his Stuff (80 Stuff+), which sounds fine - but it turns out that Location+ is a lot less stable than Stuff.
Rodriguez has long been talented, and I think he can certainly be a guy you want to start all year long, but I think he’s over-performing right now and he makes for a decent guy to get rid of right now.
As for Eflin, oh yeah it’s just another mediocre pitcher turned great by the Rays. He dominated the Pirates yesterday to send them to their fourth straight loss.
For the year: 28.4% K%, 2.8% BB%, 13.3% SwStr%, 58% GB%
That’s a pretty attractive stat line. Only three pitchers have a SwStr% above 13% and a GB% above 55%, and those other two are high-walk pitchers (Edward Cabrera and Nick Martinez).
Let’s look at pitchers with a 13%+ SwStr%, a sub-8% BB%, and a 50%+ GB%
» Eovaldi, Peterson, Oviedo, Berrios, Eflin, T Rogers, Springs
Everything looks pretty darn good for Eflin if we go back to the pitch mix. He has the fastball variations that get ground balls and then the curveball which has been very good, and he also has a changeup to mix in there. Pretty impressive stuff, the Rays have done it again. I doubt he’s available in your league, but if he is - you know what to do!
Lucas Giolito led the day in whiffs, and he’s been pitching quite good this year. Good for you for buying-low on him after the bad 2022 season. The bounce-back was pretty easy to pick up on, and he was someone I touted as a good later-round pick. He’s still not a fantasy ace, don’t get me wrong, but he’s was never as bad as people thought watching him last year. At the very least, he’s someone you start every time out right now. The results at the end of the year should be solid or better.
Grayson Rodriguez was bad yesterday. He got just six whiffs and gave up three homers on four barrels with a 23.4% CSW%. That was his worst start of the year.
Nobody is questioning the talent (which is to say, the upside), but it seems like it will be a bumpy ride (at least in the short term) for G-Rod. I think it’s probably fine to cut him in redraft leagues, but certainly, I won’t blame anybody for riding it out if you don’t want to give up on the ceiling. I think he’s likely heading toward being a guy that I want to draft a ton of next year after his end-of-year numbers don’t end up very good this year and you can take advantage of that sophomore season discount.
Enmanuel Valdez had a double barrel yesterday. I had never heard of him before a couple of days ago, but apparently, he’s a Red Sox prospect that got the call-up! He has slashed just .225/.307/.405 with a 26% K% and an 11% BB% and 8 homers (31 PA/HR) in the minors the last two seasons (251 PA), so that’s not very good. Why am talking about this guy? Freakin’ prospect bro’s got me again.

And now to the player requests. The tweet last night generated THREE.
Request 1: Manny Machado
Come on now, Dustin! You must be scared that you wasted a first or second-round pick on a bust! Manny Mackadoo is slashing .235/.281/.378 with four homers and two steals so far.
But that’s irrelevant honestly. This is a lesson we all have to learn, especially us fantasy writers. The game we all play here is essentially for clicks. You want clicks, you have to put out content. Saying nothing is doing nothing. But when it comes to a guy like Machado, the best thing to say is nothing.
I could sit here (and lots of iNDusTrY folks probably would) and give you like a super in-depth look at Machado and pick out crazy granular things about his swing decisions and batted ball impact and all that - but what would be the point? Do I really think that I can paint a more accurate picture of Manny Machado with one month’s worth of games rather than the picture that has already been painted by his long career? He’s 30, so it’s not like we have to really question the age. The only possible thing I could hope to pick out is something about him maybe being hurt - and that doesn’t seem to be the case, and it would be wild speculation anyways.
So what should you do with Machado? Nothing! Treat him like you treated him three weeks ago, he’ll almost surely have a very good season from now on.
Request 2
Abner Uribe, Jeremiah Estrada and Carlos Vargas - Can you please speak on the next wave of high upside relievers in the upper minors. Thank you.
Thanks for the thanks, but I’ve never heard of these guys. I don’t spend much time in the minor leagues because I prefer to deal with the known rather than the unknown. There is so much in life we don’t know, and can’t know, and trying to make the unknown known is an exercise in utter meaningless.
“Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”
Ecclesiastes 1:2
This is like an onion on meaningless too. Not only are we talking about minor leaguers, we’re talking about minor league relievers. And relievers is where the data tells us the least! There’s just nothing I can offer here (and nothing anybody else can offer you either of real use, don’t buy the snake oil), I’m sorry. I hope you appreciate my honesty.
Request 3: Luis Robert
Alright, this is better! Robert is not a known player like Machado. We’ve only seen a few years of him and the results have been all over the place.
This year:
» .218/.254/.429, 6 HR, 11% Brl%, 29% K%, 3% BB%, 68% Cont%, 40% GB%
YoY numbers:
His K% is a smiley face, which is always annoying. He made us think he wasn’t a high strikeout rate player from 2021-2022, and collectively that was almost 700 PAs so it was pretty believable.
I suppose I still should believe he’s not going to be a 28%+ K% guy since that data sample is so much bigger, but it’s not great to see the contact rate drop to 68% this year. When I think of Luis Robert, I think of your classic free-swinger, so let’s check on the plate discipline marks and compare them to last year.
Stat: 2022 → 2023
Swing%: 61.5% → 53.1%
Z-Swing%: 83.5% → 69.5%
Chase%: 43.1% → 36.7%
Swing Dec%: 61.5% → 65.3%
A clear approach change here. He is swinging much less, and therefore taking many more strikes. That perfectly explains the heightened K%. The rule of thumb would be that if you’re going to take some strikes, you better have a good contact rate to make up for it since you’re having fewer chances to avoid a strikeout. His swing decision mark of 65% is below the league average of 69% (that stat is the % of your swings that come at pitches in the strike zone), so that’s not a great sign either. He seems to have become more passive but not in a great way.
It could all change in a hurry, and it’s certainly reasonable to give a player even more time to figure it out after he undergoes a change in approach. We know that he has huge power and speed, and that makes him a guy you’re not going to want to be dropping any time soon, but I can’t sit here and say the high strikeout rate is just a blip that will come down - because it seems like that might be part of the package deal.
So I can’t really make a definitive statement about Robert since he's given us so many different things over the years, and he seems like a new version of himself again for 2023. It would be hard for me to bench him right now, but I wouldn’t say it’s crazy to do if you have a good replacement.
Alright thanks for sending in the requests, I hope this didn’t completely piss all three of you off!
I’ve included the entire report for free today, maybe we’ll do that on Fridays. All of the stuff that is usually below the paywall you will find below, become a paid subscriber today to get that stuff every day along with the dashboards, projections, reports, etc.
