MLB Daily Notes - May 6th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Good morning to everybody except the weird blue grass growing in my front yard. All of the sudden there’s just this nasty tall grass with a bunch of seedlings at the top towering over the regular grass. I don’t know if I should try to kill it or just cut it and wait it out, from my reading last night it said it’s a cool-weather variety which should go dormant again when the temperatures are high for an extended period. There’s so much weird crap that can grow in your yard and a lot of is really disgusting. I get legitimately grossed out by a lot of the weeds that sprout up.
I paid very little attention this weekend so we have to do a bit of Saturday-Sunday recap.
Top Pitching Scores
Jones 35
Means 34
Glasnow 32
Gilbert 30
Skubal 30
Taillon 29
Gausman 29
Kremer 28
Lopez 28
Crochet 26
Cortes 25
T Walker 22
The interesting names ehre would be:
Crochet: Two really good starts in a row now after the bad stretch. 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 6 K, 0 BB yesterday, although the SwStr% was just 9.1%. He threw a ton of strikes though (31.8% Ball%), so he’s looking very good. Good for you for holding on / buyin glow.
Kremer: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 6 K, 1 BB against the Reds. For a few years now he’s been a guy that can have some really good starts but overall is mediocre. This year it’s a 23% K% and 7% BB% with an 11.1% SwStr%, so I’d view him pretty much as a league-average pitcher.
The Reds are really scuffling, hitting just .181/.250/.279 since April 21st. They now have just one player (Elly) over an .800 OPS and three other players (Steer/Fraley/Stephenson) above a .700 mark (and Fraley isn’t even a regular).
Benson: .670
India: .637
Candelario: .634
CES: .519
Not what we expected from the Reds, but a reminder that young offenses cannot be trusted.
Some really bad pitching performances from the last two days:
Rogers -15
Winn -12
Waldron -10
Boyle -6
Wacha -6
Elder -5
Fedde -2
Valdez 2
Pepiot 2 (injury)
Feltner 3
Manoah 3
Yes that’s right, Alek Manoah returned.
4IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 6 K, 4 BB, 8.7% SwStr%, 43.5% Ball%
The question of how he was good in 2021-2022 will baffle baseball fans for the rest of time.
Stats by Season, Alek Manoah
2021: 20 GS, 3.22 ERA, 19.0% K-BB%
2022: 31 GS, 2.24 ERA, 16.4% K-BB%
23-24: 19 GS, 6.21 ERA, 5.0% K-BB%
Your top weekend hitters (Friday-Sunday):
Ohtani: 81 fantasy points (3 HR, 2 SB, 5 R, 6 RBI)
Rooker: 69 fantasy points (3 HR, 7 RBI)
L Garcia: 68 fantasy points (2 HR, 1 SB, .778 AVG)
Muncy: 51 fantasy points (3 HR, 3 R, 4 RBI)
Caballero: 50 fantasy points (4 SB, 5 R, 5 BB)
Judge: 47 fantasy points (1 HR, 4 R, 2 RBI, 1 SB)
Baty: 45 fantasy points (2 HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, .417 AVG)
Wills Contreras: 44 fantasy points (1 HR, 1 SB, 4 R)
Arenado: 44 fantasy points (6 RBI, 1 HR, .444 AVG)
Michael Busch is struggling lately.
Before April 20th: .328/.405/.656, 1.062 OPS, 6 HR, 28% K%, 12% BB%
Since April 21st: .176/.200/.275, .475 OPS, 0 HR, 0 SB, 38% K%, 2% BB%
Yikes!
Some other scufflers in this sample (since April 21st)
Nootbaar: .135/.167/.192, 359 OPS, 0 HR, 24% K%
Bichette: .146/.196/.188, .384 OPS, 0 HR, 0 SB, 14% K%
Olson: .116/.255/.140, .394 OPS, 0 HR, 26% K%
Seager: .140/.214/.200, .414 OPS, 1 HR, 23% K%
Soler: .128/.209/.205, .414 OPS, 1 HR, 28% K%
Carroll: .163/.234/.186, .420 OPS, 28% K%, 0 SB
Mullins: .136/.208/.227, .436 OPS, 1 HR, 3 SB, 21% K%
Steer: .137/.224/.235, .459 OPS, 1 HR, 24% K%
Bregman: .167/.231/.229, .460 OPS, 1 HR, 1 SB, 12% K%
Chapman: .200/.231/.240, .471 OPS, 0 HR, 1 SB, 34% K%
Torkelson: .186/.200/.279, .479 OPS, 0 HR, 31% K%
Still much too early to give up on anybody. If we flip the calendar back one year and look at some surprisingly bad OPS marks on April 5th, 2023 (100 PA minimum):
Jose Abreu .524
Springer: .576
Torkelson: .577
Casas: .580
J Naylor: .602
Arenado: .615
Those were the guys you were probably panicking about last year, and with Abreu it was pretty much justified. With Arenado it was a sign of a down season (only in hindsight, of course), but the other guys here ended up just fine.
The guys from the list I’d be trying to buy low on right now would have to be:
Bichette (buying very low though given his lack of HR/SB the last couple of years)
Olson (I’d still take him as a top three 1B if drafting today)
Seager (still viewing him as a top-four SS)
Soler (the homers will come, but he’s not good for a ton else so offer accordingly)
And that’s probably it. I mean I don’t mind taking the shot on Carroll either, but the K% coming up and just the lack of anything good coming on contact does make you wonder. Now if you can get him for a player you acquired outside of the top three rounds then I still think you do that - but I’m not offering like Kyle Tucker or Ozzie Albies or someone like that for him like I would have a couple of weeks ago.
Painful injury news on Trea Turner, my personal most-drafted first round player (I just kept on getting 10th pick…). Someone DM’d me “Trea Turner replacements?” and I didn’t respond. But here are some ideas
If you are just focused on replacing those steals:
Jose Caballero
Brice Turang
If you’re looking more at overall replacement value:
Luis Garcia: Guy is now hitting .337/.381/.510 with a 19% K%, 3 HR and 6 SB
Ezequiel Tovar: Really struggling with the K% (32.2%), and he is way too close to Javier Baez-type plate discipline, but I think the K% will come down and he can hit you a few homers and steal you a few bases. He’s Trea Turner lite, like very, very lite - but maybe he can become less-lite with warm Colorado weather and an improving strikeout rate. The kid is still just 22 years old, by the way.
Jeremy Pena: I’m not sure if I buy the mini-breakout here, but he’s another younger bat (26) so it’s not a huge surprise to see improvement. He’s hitting .323/.367/.446 this year wtih three homers and a very ince 14.4% K%. Not much power (4.5% Brl%), and only a few steals… but an everyday player who contributes across the board, or at least he has contributed across the board so far.
Zach Neto: Another really young guy (23). Doesn’t have a good line right now with the .237/.387/.360 line and just two homers. But a decent 7.7% Brl% and five steals with a really high 32% attempt rate. He could turn into a really nice roto player at some point, and maybe that starts soon.
Jackson Merrill: Hit his second homer this weekend and now has a good .284 batting average with four steals. He’s the youngest of them all at age 21, the early signs have been encouraging and he’s a guy I think you could really see hit more and more homers as he adjusts to big league pitching (or maybe the league will adjust to him and it will all go south, best of luck to you.)
Oswaldo Cabrera: Here’s your dseperation option if all of the above are taken. He’s at .250/.285/.397 with four homers and two steals. He’s 25 and playing most days for the Yankees, albeit at the bottom of the lineup. Nice 18% K% and 85% Contact%, but a low 3.2% Brl%.
Some signs of life from Oneil Cruz this weekend, by the way. He had 12 plate appearances and two homers on his two barrels. Still struck out four times… but if the “boost of confidence” bump is a real thing, he should have gotten that over the weekend. Thanks, Rockies!
That’s it for the daily notes today. I’d tell you what’s coming next but I have no idea.
