I think my most drafted reliever druing draft season was Ryan Pressly. During NFBC draft season, I kind of saw the trade coming, so I took him late in a few drafts. And then, even after teh trade, I was still one of the more aggressive guys on him. I thought he had the Cubs closer locked down, and I believed that the Cubs would win a lot of games.
What I didn’t consider was that… maybe Ryan Pressly is completely terrible. And you know, that’s a mistake. It turns out that when you’re drafting fantasy players, it is good to consider whether or not they are any good at baseball.
Pressly gave up five hits and eight earned runs without recording an out last night. That is tied for the most earned runs allowed by any pitcher without recording an out since at least 2020. Only nine pitchers in these last five seasons have managed to give up six or more earned runs with zero outs recorded. It’s an impressive thing to accomplish.
Pressly now has a 7.62 ERA and a 1.92 WHIP. I’m actually suprised it’s that low. Yesterday, he had a 2.08 ERA with four of the Cubs seven saves. But none of the indicators are any good for the veteran righty. His K% on the season is just 8.1%, and he has a 13% BB%. So that’s a negative five K-BB%. Not what you want to see. The guy is 36, and the Astros appear to have once again known what they were doing.
Porter Hodge was the closer for them at the end of last year, so there’s a decent chance he gets some save opportunities coming up. However, his numbers aren’t all that special this year with a 23.5% K% and a 13.2% BB%. That’s a poor 10% K-BB%.
If you have Pressly, I guess I don’t know what to tell you. Life is hard sometimes.
Tony Gonsolin is trying to make me look dumb for saying people shouldn’t have spent all that FAAB money on him last weekend.
5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 8 K, 2 BB, 22% SwStr%, 47.6% Strike%, 40.2% Ball%
He now has a 22% SwStr% and a 33% Ball% on 159 pitches.
The catch is that he’s faced the Marlins both times. His seventeen strikeouts have come against:
Agustin Ramirez (3)
Connor Norby (3)
Eric Wagaman (2)
Matt Mervis (2)
Jesus Sanchez (2)
Kyle Stowers (2)
Otto Lopez
Dane Myers
Ronny Simon
I don’t want to over-minimize it. It’s impressive to post a 22% SwStr% in two starts against any lineup. The signs are very good right now. I’m just not going to be able to shake his career 23.5% K% and 4.24 SIERA any time soon.
Four big names had big outings:
Chris Sale: 6.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 10 K, 2 BB, 112 pitches
Zack Wheeler: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 7 K, 1 BB
Nathan Eovaldi: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 1 BB
Pablo Lopez: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 11 K, 1 BB
The most interesting outing in my view came from Matthew Liberatore.
7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 8 K, 3 BB, 17.2% SwStr%
His K-BB% is now at 20% for the year (23.8% K%, 3.8% BB%), and the SwStr% got a boost up to 12.7% with a 32% Ball%. So he’s throwing a ton of strikes and getting the job done. This outing was against the Pirates🧂, but still - the guy has been very good this year. And I think he should be owned all over by now.
On the other side of Liberatore was Paul Skenes. He bounced back with a quality start, but it was a 6:4 K:BB in six innings. The K% is at 24.7% now and the walk rate is up to 16.3%. That’s an 18.4% K-BB%, and it’s not what you were hoping for with that first or second round pick you might have used on Skenes. He also has just three wins in eight starts because the Pirates are terrible. So everything is terrible in Pittsburgh and I’m really glad I moved away from that God forsaken city!
Our boy Drew Rasmussen is going the wrong way. It’s tragic to see.
First four: 20.2 IP, 0.87 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, 29% K%, 6.6% BB%
Last four: 20.0 IP, 4.95 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 20% K%, 8.3% BB%
I’m holding on for a bit longer, but he’s not someone I’m completely commited to. He did throw 86 pitches last night, so that’s a positive. He doesn’t have a true breaking ball, he just kinda throws a ton of fastball variations at guys. And that can work, but it’s not the greatest formula for success. In a ten-team league, I think you can move on from Rasmussen if there’s someone else you really like.
Andrew Abbott struck out eight Braves last night. He now has a 32% K% in five starts. That’s incredibly surprising. Especially since he has just an 11.6% SwStr%. But it does present an opportunity for me to share one of my favorite scatter plots
You can see the relationship between SwStr% and K%. There’s a strong positive correlation. So any pitcher with a high K% and a low SwStr% should be expected to regress in K%, and vice-versa. That means we’re expecting negative regression from:
Hunter Brown
Carlos Rodon
Tylor Megill
Logan Webb
Andrew Abott
Will Warren
Shane Baz
Zac Gallen
Clay Holmes
And some positive regression from:
Spencer Schwellenbach
Ronel Blanco
Nathan Eovaldi
Jacob deGrom
Tyler Anderson
Ryan Pepiot
Justin Verlander
Shota Imanaga (IL)
Casey Mize
Check out that scatter plot here.
It was not a good time for Lucas Giolito out there. This guy is prone to blow-up outings, and he showed us that last night against the Rangers:
3.2 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 2 K, 1 BB
His problem is usually the longball, but it wasn’t last night. He did not give up a home run, he just got singled and doubled to death. A .588 BABIP! But he did get hit hard (.385 xwOBA). He didn’t deserve all of those ten hits, but it’s not like he deserved to have a good outing either.
That reminds me of this start luck google sheet I have. It compares actual wOBA to xwOBA for every SP start. Giolito sat on top of the “bad luck” list from yesterday with a .543 wOBA allowed to that .385 xwOBA.
Your unluckiest starts of the year so far:
I filtered that to xwOBA under .325 to get some guys who actually pitched decent while getting whacked.
You can check out that resource here if you want.
On that note, why don’t we see the unluckiest pitchers of the year, as measured by this wOBA - xwOBA, and filtering to an xwOBA under .350.
I have begun tracking boom hitter results. I should have been doing this from the beginning of the season, but I wasn’t thinking. The results are positive since tracking began on May 1st.
The BOOM algo is tuned to finding extra base hits. So I’m looking for these guys to hith .300 or anything like that. The slugging percentage and the home runs is what we’re after. And so far, in all of six days, it’s going very well. Paid subscribers get those in the cheat sheet resource daily. Here’s what it looks like for today:
One more thing. I have to give a shout out to Byron Buxton. He is still healthy, and he is crushing this year.
140 PA, .267/.300/.519, 8 HR, 7 SB
The strikeouts are high (33%) and the walks are low (3.6%). That is who Buxton is. He likes to swing the bat, and he likes to hit the long ball, and he does not care if he strikes out. But the whole picture is a very good-looking one for fantasy leagues while he’s in the lineup.
And that reminds me of another scatter plot! The HR% vs. SB Attempt% guy on the MLB & MiLB Stats Dashboard. This plots our two favorite things together - home run rates and stolen base attempt rates.
So you can see that Pete Crow-Armstrong is in a league of his own. That’s pretty amazing to see.
The most exciting fantasy players will be guys with
SB Attempt% >= 15%
HR% >= 3.5%
So you can slap those parameters onto the plot:
The unlabeled dots:
Byron Buxton (above Chisholm)
Fernando Tatis Jr. (by Langford)
Kyle Tucker (by Langford)
Jackson Chourio (bottom left)
Brenton Doyle (bottom left)
It’s a cool plot. You can even do it for the minors:
That’ll do it! We have baseball all day long today, so we’ve gotta get to work! And I guess I’m going to the zoo after work. So I’ve really gotta get moving.
