Hunter Greene left early with a groin. We’ll know more today. But it seems unlikely that a groin thing completely derails his season. Maybe he misses a start or two, but you should feel relieved that this wasn’t an arm or shoulder injury.
I have to make fun of someone in the Discord. And I’m allowed to do that, because when I established the Discord - I made sure everybody knew that there would be potentially offensive talk in there. Someone asked me if they should start Dylan Cease against the Yankees. And I said YES. But the guy didn’t listen to me. He didn’t listen to little old me, can you believe it?
Cease struck out nine Yankees in 6.2 innings, giving up just one hit and two walks. Fantastic start. Classic, classic Cease here sucking for three weeks and then ripping off a gem.
He did get hurt and left the game in the seventh, but they are saying it was just “forearm cramping”. So, okay.
Cease is one of those guys where the Blake Snell Rule applies. That rule:
You will get a bad starts, but you’ll get a bunch of elite starts, and at the end of the year the numbers will be good.
Jackson Jobe vs. Chase Dollander could have been an intriguing matchup of youg aces, except that neither guy is an ace. They’re both awful, it would appear. Jobe ruined our little $20 → $200 challenge on the first day. So we’re 0/2 on that. Maybe I should stop doing dumb stuff like that.
Both guys have strikeout rates below 20% and double-digit walk rates. It’s been ugly. There is more to pitching than throwing the ball hard, it turns out!
Shane Baz’s season has gone south. He has now given up 13 earned runs and 17 hits in his last two outings (9 innings). At least that’s a very ERA calculation to figure out.
ERA = (ER*9/IP
ERA = (13*9)/9
ERA = (13*9)/9
ERA = 13.00
Let’s check in on the full profile:
Down to a 15% K-BB% with a very bad 10.7% SwStr% and a mediocre 35% Ball%. He’s also letting the ball get into the air (43% GB%), so nothing looks very good for the Bazinator. I think he’ll continue to be a fringe-worthy guy. I’m not saying cut him in 15-team leagues, and I do think he’s a useful guy in good matchups. I’m sure he’ll have plenty of good outings the rest of the way, but that early-season breakout wasn’t for real.
Yusei Kikuchi finally had a good start.
6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 6 K, 1 BB
The Strike% went crazy at 59.3%, but it was mostly foul balls and called strikes, as shown by the 12.1% SwStr%. The numbers are still bad for the year with an 11.5% K-BB%, a 46.4% Strike%, and a 36.4% Ball%. But it was good to see some life for Kikuchi. I do think you can let him go in 10 or 12-teamers, but I wouldn’t be giving up on him entirely. I could see Kikuchi getting it together and having a pretty good stretch of starts. Don’t forget about how his 2024 season went.
Kikuchi 2024 Halves
April - June: 4.18 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 24.8% K%, 5.6% BB%
July - Sept: 3.92 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 31.3% K%, 6.4% BB%
Big nine-strikeout day for Ben Brown. His season update:
7 GS, 36.1 IP, 4.95 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, 26.0% K%, 9.5% BB%
So that’s a non-awful K-BB% but awful ratios. That is a formula for a buy-low. However, I don’t think Brown will be consistent enough to deserve any run in a standard league.
But let’s look at some ERA and K-BB% mismatches across the league. If we have to put hard numbers on things, I would say a 15% K-BB% is about as low as you want to go for standard league purposes. Meaning that anybody under that, you probably shouldn’t be dancing with. So let’s make that the minimum and then sort by ERA.
There are eight SPs with K-BB% above 15% and an ERA above 4.50:
E-Rod, man. He is doing some stuff!
Let’s flip it. K-BB% under 15%, ERA under three;
Lots of names there!
I might have to redefine what a “Magic Formula Qualifier” is, because there have been a ton of them most days in the notes:
The criteria is K% under 20% and Brl% above 14%.
An even better quick resource to pick out interesting hitters is that Player Checklist I developed last year. This looks for well-rounded hitters in three areas
→ Power
→ Steals
→ Plate Discipline
It gives a checkmark or an X in seven different categories. Here are the 6+ checkmark hitters going right now:
You will see some surprising names here quite often. Right now, Bo Naylor is the most surprising. Let’s take a quick look at that.
The Good
→ 20% K%
→ 77% Cont%
→ 10.4% Brl%
→ 28% GB%
→ .194 BABIP
The Bad
→ 103.7 EV90
→ .208 xBA
→ 19% LD%
So he is barely earning these checkmarks. None of “The Good” is really aanytihng special, those are all just “decent” numbers, I would say. But we have long known that Naylor has home run and stolen base ability. He had a 20-20 season in the minors a couple of years back. And he is hitting a lot of fly balls, so I think the homers will keep coming at at least a non-awful rate. He’s a decent target in super deep leagues where you need a second catcher.
Jordan Westburg is on the IL, so maybe he won’t be the same guy when he returns. His first few weeks were very poor in the results category, but there were a lot of positive signs. I wouldn’t be giving up on Westburg yet. It sounds like he’ll return next week.
→ xwOBA: .330
→ xBA: .251
→ Brl%: 12.9%
→ EV90: 106.0
He is also a guy with a good amount of speed, so I think there’s a world where Westburg returns and performs at a 25-15 pace the rest of the way out. But it’s no guarantee.
Let’s look at a few hitters crushing at AAA before we end the notes for the day.
155 PA, .341/.422/.615, 6 HR, 12 SB, 23% K%, 11% BB%
It would seem he’s ready to go! The Snakes just don’t have a clear spot for him to play with how well Geraldo Perdomo has been playing. I do think Lawlar will get most of his fantasy value from steals when he does arrive. The raw power isn’t anything special (10.6% Brl%, 103.7 EV90), and the strikeout rate is in the danger zone with a mediocre 77% Contact%. Now, a 23% K% and a 77% Contact% would work just fine in the Majors, but we cannot expect those numbers to translate from AAA to MLB. They’ll both likely get a lot worse. So a guy with a 27% K% and poor EVs isn’t a great bet. But the steals should be there, and the power potential is certainly there. He’s not a Jacob Wilson / Chandler Simpson type by any means.
160 PA, .336/.425/.672, 10 HR, 5 SB, 27.5% K%, 9.4% BB%
The son of Matt Kemp! How about that. The immediately red flag is that K%. And it gets even worse when you see that the contact rate is at 65.5%. So the only way he would have much of a chance at success in the Majors (this year, at least) is if he hits the ball super duper hard. And he does! The EV90 is 108, the max is up there at 113.
He has an 18% Brl% at AAA and has the GB% down there very, very low at 32%. So I do think he could hit some homers in the Majors, but you’re going to see a lot of strikeouts.
.301/.417/.496, 5 HR, 3 SB, 19.4% K%, 17.3% B%
Good to see the K% under 20%, but this guy has just one homer in his last 70+ PAs. He hit two on Opening Day, you might remember, so he hasn’t been doing a ton of round-tripping since then. But at least it has come with a reduction in strikeouts.
His season Brl% is still north of 20%, and the contact rate is okay at 71%. I do think he’ll strike out a lot in his first go at big league pitching. You could have yourself a Nick Kurtz situation here. He’s also hitting a ton of ground balls down there at AAA (51%), which isn’t what you want to see. I’d bet against him being a useful player this year in the Majors for a standard fantasy league.
You know about Bubba Chandler, but it’s Hunter Barco who is having the best pitching season for the Pirates down on the farm.
6 GS, 25.2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0.70 WHIP, 36.2% K%, 7.4% BB%, 18% SwStr%
ERA isn’t a predictive stat, especially when looking at going from AA to the Majors. But zero is a pretty good number!
Barco is a 6’4’’ left-handed pitcher, and he was just promoted to AAA. So we’ll get some Statcast data on him soon. But I don’t think the Pirates bring him up to the Majors any time soon, if at all this year. But maybe the injury bug will hit them and they’ll have to, I don’t know.
Chandler should be up soon, and after that - it seems like Barco would be their best minor league arm. But the incentive to get him up this year is very, very low for the Pirates front office.
6 GS, 36.1 IP, 1.73 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 31.7% K%, 5.5% BB%, 18.4% SwStr%
He has been at AAA all year, so we could see him get a call-up any time, I’d say. That doesn’t mean it will be happen, but there’s not much holding him back. He clearly can dominate minor league hitters, there’s not much question about that.
He is a 6’0’’ lefty, and according to his minor league pitcher profile, he has been dominating minor league hitters without even looking at them.
Amazing stuff. Imagine what this guy could do if he was looking in the right direction!
The problem for me is that his fastball averages just 91.1 miles per hour. It might play up significantly above that as a lefty, but it’s tough to get the job done consistently in the Majors with that little fastball velo. We saw this with Cade Povich last year. His minor league numbers were elite, but he hasn’t had much success at all in the Majors. You need a good fastball to be a good MLB pitcher, and it’s hard to have a good fastball when you can’t touch 93+.
The End!
