So that is another way in these notes to determine hitters over and underperforming in recent weeks.
It is free today, along with everything else, because every once in awhile I want to put one of these out that shows everything that is available for paid subscribers, but it will go behind the paywall soon.
Last night was the first game of this wood-bat men’s baseball league I joined this year. I haven’t played actual baseball since little league and had never in my life swung a wood bat at a pitch coming from an actual human, so it was an interesting experience. The good news is that it’s a pitch-to-contact situation where pitchers can’t throw junk or really throw as hard as they can, so with some moderate hand-eye coordination you can hang around.
I have enough of that to get by, and I put balls into play in each of my two at-bats. Nobody cares about me talking about my performance, of course, so here’s the story I have to tell.
There is a two-hour time limit and after that you can’t start a new inning. So we were tied 7-7 after the fifth inning, but they don’t do ties. So it went to a tiebreaker, which was that each team picks a pitcher and a hitter to throw and hit three pitches, and whoever hits the most balls into the outfield grass on the fly wins.
So I’m subbed out for the fifth inning since we have 12 players and need to rotate defensively, and the manager of the team comes up to ask me who I think should be the hitter for the tiebreaker. I told him bro I’ve seen two at-bats from all of these people, you have been managing this team for years, obviously, you should pick based on what you know.
And his reply to me, I’m not even making this up, is “Yeah but who has been hot today?”.
Now if you don’t read this blog on a regular basis, you won’t understand the joke here, but man I just about shit my pants. The hotness question follows me everywhere I go. It’s possible this guy is a reader of mine and just pulled off this elaborate troll of me to get me all hot and bothered.
Anyways, I didn’t answer the question and we won in the tiebreaker, and I played fine - I didn’t make a fool of myself which is always the goal with first impressions. But my wrist freaking hurts today those bats are heavy.
Sandy Alcantara had the bounce-back start yesterday with 15 whiffs. It was another strong 13.3% SwStr% and he brought his K% up two points. I talked about him as a guy that had K% (positive) regression coming, and that began yesterday.
I don’t have any Sandy in my leagues because he was too expensive for what the expectation should have been, but the early season performance was flukey and we should expect him to be a top-ten fantasy SP moving forward.
Roansy Contreras kept the Pirates losing streak going and continued to crush my dreams, but he did pop up with 14 whiffs to get his season SwStr% to 12.1%.
The slider is still working well, and it’s good that he’s throwing it more this year, but you can see that the fastball still just isn’t good. A 12.1% SwStr% with a 40% GB% isn’t going to work very well, and he was someone we also identified as over-performing early on. I think he’s a Major League pitcher, but I don’t think he’s a fantasy option at this point, again this is all very sad for me to say. If the Pirates don’t win this series against the Rockies at home I might like cut my left foot off or something.
Julio Urias came in with more velocity yesterday, here’s a screenshot from the “Pitch Logs” tab on the main dashboard:
He struck out only three last night but for the year has an elevated 25.5% K% along with the always-great walk rate of 4.9%.
I am really struggling with Clarke Schmidt, who will be someone to focus on this week. He should make two starts this week and he has been awful this year, which makes it weird that I’m even talking about him.
The reason I’m struggling is that he shows up on the magic formula qualifiers with a 28.7% K%, a 4.6% BB%, and a 45% GB% over the last three weeks. That’s a K-BB% well over 20%, and it’s hard to struggle when you’re doing that, as we always talk about here.
For the year he’s at a 19% K-BB%, so just to try to make my point I’m going to give you the long list of pitchers that have made at least six starts with a K-BB% above 19%, ordered by how many innings they’ve thrown:
Gerrit Cole, Julio Urias, Logan Webb, Framber Valdez, Nathan Eovaldo, Eduardo Rodriguez, Joe Ryan, Pablo Lopez, Zac Gallen, Clayton Kershaw, Kevin Gausman, Luis Castillo, Mitch Keller, Cristian Javier, Alex Cobb, Jose Berrios, Spencer Strider, Jose Berrios, Spencer Strider, Shane McClanahan, Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn, Domingo German, Shohei Ohtani, Zack Wheeler, Chris Sale, Freddy Peralta, Nick Lodolo, Logan Gilbert, Hunter Greene, JP Sears, Jacob deGrom, Reid Detmers, Clarke Schmidt, Matt Strahm, Grayson Rodriguez
If we take all of those pitchers together, they have a 3.57 ERA with a 1.14 WHIP.
Seven of those pitchers have ERAs over 5:
I think with any pitcher with an ERA above 5, we should expect it to come down. ERAs tend to move toward the mean, which would be in the mid-fours. But with these names, I just can’t see how you can really pitch to a 5+ ERA with a K-BB% that good. I’m buying in on all of those names, and I think you can even stream Schmidt this week for the two-starts.
The top 3 hitters on the JA algorithm ranks are all Blue Jays so that’s ridiculous.
Guerrero Jr.
Bichette
Chapman
Smith
Acuna Jr.
Diaz
Pasquantino
Goldschmidt
Reynolds
Kelenic
Maybe that makes me feel a little bit better about the Pirates going 0-6 against the Rays and Blue Jays, but again - if they lose these next two I’m going to lose a foot.
Alright that’ll be it for my writing today. Again, everything is free today - the whole report is available for you all, but tomorrow all of the really interesting stuff goes back behind the paywall, so become a paid subscriber today to get access to that plus all of the other stuff for the rest of the year.
