It’s double-header day! None of the scripts or reports have been tested for teams having two games in one day, so this will be interesting.
That’s one of the big hurdles in the data world, when multiple things happen with the same date when usually you only get one on a certain date, or when two people in the database have the same name and everything you do aggregates on the name. Shoutout Luis Garcia…
In the Statcast database, you have unique ID numbers for every game and player, so we can leverage those to solve these problems, BUT nobody wants to see the ugly ID number in reports and stuff. I could have solved the problem by having every player's name look like “Juan Soto 682924” but that’s not a good solution.
Anyways, we shall overcome!
For paid subs, I’ve added a new sheet that tracks pitch mix changes for 2022 as compared to 2021. It finds all pitches that are either new this year, have significantly added velocity, or significantly added spin. It’s also a Tableau Dashboard that subs have access to. Here’s how it looks:
Me and Producer Lee talked about week one yesterday for an hour. Talked about a bunch of risers and fallers on both sides of the ball. Check it out at the links below and subscribe to that pod!
Wow the Apple pod embed centers the thing and the Spotify one doesn’t, how ugly is that! Substack gives me absolutely no power over formatting HTML, which really sucks. Like I can’t even embed tables in here.
That’s kind of where we’re at in life, I think. If you’re in my generation, your first experience to “social media” very well may have been Xanga and Myspace. You basically like had to know a little bit of HTML to make your stuff look cool at all back then - it forced you to learn something by dangling the carrot of social approval in front of your eyes. I suppose that’s still true with like graphic design & video editing… I’m sure some of these Tik Tok kids know a decent bit about editing and lighting and stuff, so maybe I’m just being a grump for no reason. Shoutout Xanga though.
Update: wrote a sick for loop to change to append a “2” on to any team name that is playing two games today, so now I can project BOTH games instead of just one. Don’t let your wives see this, they just may leave you because they can’t get me out of their heads.
I wrote up a slam piece about Justin Steele & Hunter Greene here and their ridiculous and unsustainable fastball usage.
