MLB Daily Notes: Monday, June 6
Introduction / Explanations for New Readers
It’s Monday and I’m back to “work”, but still out here at the beach while my family takes another week of vacation - although calling this week a vacation for my wife is not an accurate description since she has even less help chasing these two little wrecking balls around all day. Our one-year-old boy quite literally does not stop moving unless he’s asleep or strapped to something. It’s pretty wild to see - we’re really looking forward to the times when he kinda settles down and can sit and play with one thing for a while. For any prospective new parents, just be warned that the first 3-6 months are actually a freaking cakewalk compared to when they are between six months and two years. In my experience, the first three months (for the dad at least) are super easy, and then after the second birthday things really get easier from there on - but I’m pretty inexperienced here.
I need to do quite a bit of work for my real job today, which is a pain. It would be nice if someday I could pull off this fantasy sports thing full-time. That’s really not possible just doing writing and things like this, but maybe with my data science skills and all that business, I could someday pull it off. I think I could probably make enough doing this kind of stuff as well as some other side data jobs and whatnot if it were just me I had to support, but soon I’ll have four other human beings completely dependent on my ability to make money - so this is probably a side-gig for life. Health insurance is a real drag too, you basically need a full-time job with a corporation so you can get your health insurance through that, or else you get totally jobbed… I don’t know, we’ll see where life takes me. I’m certainly insanely happy with everything I get to do right now - but if anybody has any ideas or opportunities - hit me up! I’m always listening!
Braxton Garrett topped the CSW% leaderboard below but didn’t put up great results in the box score. His leading pitch was the slider (27), and then he mixed four-seamers (15), sinkers (12), curveballs (12), and changeups (6). So that’s a super deep arsenal, but it’s always a bit alarming to me to see a starting pitcher be this reliant on a breaking ball. He put up dominant SwStr% on both eh slider 922%) and the four-seamer (20%), but got zero whiffs on the sinker and only one on the curveball. He should probably be left alone for now even if he does stick in the rotation.
Aaron Ashby had another brilliant outing on Saturday and now is a top-10 JA pitcher, we didn’t get to mention that yesterday. He’s seemingly a stud right now, but it’s surely too late to add him for free. But he’s someone I’d be willing to give up quite a good amount to acquire right now - he’s really impressive.
Yordan Alvarez was the hitter of the day with three barrels, a homer, and no strikeouts. He’s now the JA model’s #1 hitter when we look at only hitters with 150+ PA. Total stud and such a bright career ahead of him.
Kyle Farmer is a guy to highlight as well. Since May 15th (arbitrary date I just picked) he’s hitting .422/.460/.733 with four homers and a 10.3% Brl% while only striking out 14% of the time on an 82% contact rate. He’s my age though (31), so probably not a super exciting dude moving forward, but hey hitting in Cincinnati is a pretty good place to be in right now - he should be added speculatively and probably started for now.
Not much baseball action today so we’ll take a bit of a breather on the DFS stuff for today and get back on it tomorrow! Here are the notes, enjoy your Mondays!
