MLB Daily Notes: Monday, May 2
We made the trip back to Pittsburgh this weekend, as my wife ran the Pittsburgh Half Marathon. For those of you who don’t know me, I grew up in Pittsburgh and lived there my whole life until about a year and a half ago, when we moved out to northern Indiana.
I took my daughter downtown to see her [nine-weeks pregantn] mom finish the race. We were coming in more than an hour after the race started, so all of the roads were shut down and we couldn’t get anywhere near the city to park. As someone who worked downtown for years and refused to pay the exorbitant parking prices, I knew a few spots on the north side of the city so we meandered over there and then had to walk a bit to get to the T (like a subway basically) by Heinz Field for it to take us downtown.
My daughter (three years old) was pretty skeptical of everything going on, but ended up having a good time. At one point she said “this is a yucky city”, at which point I realized… yes, she’s right.
It’s funny how quickly you can change your mind on things. I was a city guy for most of my life. Right out of college I moved within the city limits and took that train to work every day and lived that whole city life and quite enjoyed it. Now I live in the suburbs of the middle of the country in a newer neighborhood with a little bit of land and space and there’s no traffic or hills and people are really nice and I’m like … yeah, cities are yucky.
Missing a day of baseball stats has me feeling like I’m coming off an offseason again. It looks like Mike Trout took the JA algorithm crown over the weekend, and that top 10 is starting to fill out with mostly guys we already knew to be studs (Trout, J-Ram, Yordan, Judge are all in there). There are still the surprises (Taylor Ward, Joc Pederson, Alec Bohm), but things are starting to normalize a bit.
On the pitching side, the top ten is even more expected. Rodon, Burnes, Gausman, McClanahan, Ohtani, Cease, Wright, Crowe, Scherzer, and Sandoval make up your top ten right now. If we get rid of Crowe since he’s a reliever, Kershaw would slide into the top 10 there, so it’s just a list of guys we already knew were studs plus Kyle Wright.
Jose Berrios finds himself second-to-last on the list ahead of just Carlos Hernandez out of 137 pitchers ranked. And we’ve got a pretty decent sample on him too with 24 innings. I mean that’s not really a decent sample, but enough to show that he’s actually pitching really bad. These JA ranks have been insanely fun for me, and I hope people are enjoying!
Okay now we’ll get to the notes
