Pitcher Review
Big 9:1 K:BB from Carlos Rodon. He is the #23 pitcher on my L60 player rater with a 3.79 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP with a whole bunch of strikeouts. He has come quite a way from early on. He started the year with a 23.5 K% in his first ten starts on just a 12.9% SwStr%. Over his last 18, it’s 28.6% K% and a 15.6% SwStr%. That makes Rodon one of just ten SPs with a K-BB% over 20% since June began.
Paul Skenes is on that list. He had another very good start. His rookie year now looks like this:
19 GS, 114 IP, 9 W, 2.13 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 32% K%, 6.8% BB%, 25.2 K-BB%
According to Statcast, he has added a sweeper in these last two outings. He threw it twice last time and four times last night. So he’s now thrown six different pitch types this year.
I don’t think he needs much more than the four-seamer, that sinker/splitter, and maybe the slider. It’s a good bet that in a couple of years, we’re looking at different type of pitcher with Skenes. No matter how good he’s been this year, there’s always room for improvement as he figures out more and more what works and what doesn’t in the Majors.
He will probably get to 140 or so innings by the end of this season, and that should set him up for 170 or so next year - which is essentially a full season in these modern days. He’ll be a top-five SP pick, and maybe even top three?
Reid Detmers:
6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 8 K, 2 BB, 14.4% SwStr%, 50.5% Strike%, 35.1% Ball%
We now have Detmers with a 50% Strike%, a 34% Ball%, a 27% K%, and a 9.6% BB%. He’s the #37 SP on my automated SP ranks. He’s good. He will be a pretty nice back-of-the-fantasy-rotation target next year.
How about Joey Cantillo!
7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 10 K, 0 BB, 14.1% SwStr%, 52.5% Strike%, 34.3% Ball%
This was his best Major League start by far.
That’s his best outing of the year by 15 full fantasy points, and that includes his nine AAA starts. I don’t need to keep saying it, but the White Sox are really bad. Here is who we’ve got lined up to face the White Sox over the next 11 days:
DETMERS! And, oh boy, we might be putting our fantasy playoff results in the hands of the great Griffin Canning next week. He will surely twirl a gem, and I will rank him in my top 15 SPs next year.
David Festa sucked, so I have to eat some crow on that one. I loved this two-start week for him, but it started horribly against the Angels.
66 pitches, 4 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 4 K, 3 BB, 12.1% SwStr%, 45.5% Strike%
There’s no such thing as a hot pitcher. I didn’t recommend him solely on those last two starts, I was citing the season-long numbers the whole time, but I was fooled once again by the #recency. With guys with so little MLB data, we don’t have much of a choice but to react to the recent data, but the lesson is - no rookie is trustworthy (unless they are Paul Skenes, I guess).
Hitter Review
Austin Wells homered. He’s had a nice rookie season. He’s the #8 catcher on the last 30 days player rater.
His season:
.252/.344/.442, 13 HR, 39 R, 49 RBI, 1 SB
That’s a 20-homer pace with a fine batting average and a good OBP.
What I really need to do, and what I will do for the offseason, and build in a tab on the main dashboard where I can just get all the numbers for an individual player on one spot. I’m tired of jumping around to see the plate discipline and detailed EV stuff!
His 90th-percentile EV is a concern at just 104. That’s not awful, but it’s not to the point where we’d say, “This is a guy with a 30-homer upside”. We don’t need 30-homer upside at catcher, but it does cast some doubt on the success he’s had this year power-wise. Some more numbers on him:
49.9% Swing% (a bit high)
37% GB% (that’s where we want to be)
.262 xBA
.360 xwOBA
9.6% Brl%
40% Hard%
I think the take is that he’s a better hitter than the average catcher, and he benefits quite a bit from being a Yankee (park-wise and lineup-wise).
Speaking of catchers, Salvador Perez added another homer to his tally. His strikeout gains are one of the most surprising data points of the season.
582 PA, .275/.335/.474, 26 HR, 56 R, 98 RBI, 20.3% K%, 6.7% BB%
He ended up being a super-steal in drafts this year.
Salvador Perez K% & BB% by Year
2021: 25.6% / 4.2%
2022: 23.0% / 3.8%
2023: 23.4% / 3.3%
2024: 20.3% / 6.7%
Big gains in both categories there. He’s swinging less this year than last (43.1% vs. 46.9%), and he’s posted his highest zone-contact rate since 2018 at 84.8%.
Good stuff. #MyRoyals are still in the hunt at 79-66. They possess the second wild card spot right now, but there are six teams all within three games there, so that should be a fun race.
I forgot I was a Royals fan for a couple of weeks there. If you guys could remind me when October rolls around, I’d appreciate it.
My interest was piqued yesterday with a sweet spot rate. This is a stat you’ll see on Baseball Savant pages. It measures what percentage of your balls in play that fall within the 8-32° angle range. If you’re asking WHY:
Batting Average by Sweet Spot:
In Sweet Spot: .581
Not In Sweet Spot: .179
But I have some questions.
Is it better than line drive rate?
Is it predictive?
That’s something I will have to explore in depth at a later time. Here’s the relationship between LD% and Sweet Spot%:
There is a 0.614 correlation coefficient between them, so they’re pretty closely tied.
The one difference here is that the line drive classification considers exit velocity. You can see that overlay here:
With sweet spot, it’s a one-variable consideration. Python spit out these horrible colors for the plot, but I’m going to make you deal with it instead of changing it:
Here’s that same mess, but colored by “IsLineDrive”:
Sweet Spot Leaders:
I think it’s important to note that this isn’t something every hitter wants to succeed at. No hitter wants to trend toward the ground-ball side of this range, but plenty of hitters do want to trend toward the fly-ball side of it. Yordan Alvarez has the second-best FB% in the league at 37%, but his Sweet Spot% is around the league average. And that’s not an issue.
Note that you won’t hit many homers above that 32° max, but it’s okay if you’re falling often in the 28-35° range. Half of those balls won’t be “sweet spots”, but they’ll still be balls in the air that have a chance at extra bases.
More to come on that. In the meantime, it’s been added to the “BB Profile” tab on the main dashboard, and that’s where that screenshot above came from.
That’s a wrap! It's a huge Tuesday of baseball as these semifinal and final fantasy baseball matchups really get established!
