MLB Daily Notes - September 11th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
When you read the Bible or any other really old writings, you see that the thing on the top of every person’s mind was having children. It was the most important thing to human adults for most of human history. I understand that this had a lot to do with the fact that you often needed a lot of children to help your family survive, but aside from that - there was an emphasis put on reproduction. On family, on passing on your family name and legacy. That’s largely gone now. I’m not really trying to make a specific point here; it is just wild to me how the #1 priority of humans seemingly forever is now on a back burner. Plenty of people still want kids and have that desire and calling, but to have kids or not now is viewed as a neutral choice.
I am trying to everyday constantly remind myself that my children are a blessing from God to me, the best thing I could possibly have on earth. To view or treat them as anything else is wrong and awful, and I hope to get better and better at this as I continue to grow up. And there are any young men out there reading this who value my opinion - I would tell you to get married, stay married, and have as many kids as nature allows you. The financial stuff will work itself out, don’t let that kind of stuff stop you from the full, purposeful life that children bring you.
I added two new tabs to the main MLB dashboard yesterday. I am honestly embarrassed that it took me until September 2024 to create them. It took like an hour total of work, and it was such an obvious thing to do. They will surely be my most-used tabs moving forward.
They are Pitcher Profile and Hitter Profile. They are both single-page summaries of an individual player. I’m no artist; they could both be designed better. But to me, they are the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in months (don’t worry, my wife doesn’t read these notes).
I will be leaning hard on those for the rest of this year, and especially in the offseason as we ramp up for 2025. If you’re a paid sub, you have the link to the main dashboard - so have at it!
Pitcher Review
It was a big night for Albert Suarez with 21 whiffs.
6 IP,4 H, 1 ER, 8 K, 2 BB, 20.8% SwStr%, 50.5% Strike%
He has been nothing but inconsistent this year, and overall the numbers are pretty bad (19% K%, 7.6% BB%, 12% SwStr%). The one thing he has done is generate weak contact (.316 xwOBA, .292 BABIP, 46 PA/HR). I do not like to put any kind of trust in pitchers relying on weak contact, but you got a positive result from Suarez last night.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto finally returned to the Majors. That’s a very good sign for the Dodgers, with three weeks left until the playoffs begin.
4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 8 K, 0 BB, 18.6% SwStr%, 59.3% Strike%, 28.8% Ball%
Incredible numbers there, it seems that Yamamoto is ready to finish the season out as one of the top arms in the league. He was limited to 59 pitches there, and we’ll probably see an incremental ramp-up back to 90+. I recommended a sit yesterday just because I figured it would be four innings max, but he should be above five innings here on out - and he’s an ace.
I am guessing that looks pretty crappy on mobile, so I’m going to take a look at that on my phone after this is published and decide if I should just not post big screenshots like that.
Many of you probably streamed Ben Lively against the White Sox last night. He left the game after two scoreless innings due to an injury, so that’s unlucky.
Reynaldo Lopez also left early with an injury. We’ll get an update on that today; it could be the end of his regular season. The Braves are now tied for the last wild card spot, so they could be on the outside looking in as soon as tonight. It could be the end of the season for Lopez, but don’t drop him until we get the news on that.
It was a bounce-back start for Spencer Arrighetti.
6.2 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 7 K, 1 BB, 12.4% SwStr%, 46.4% Strike%
He did not have the greatest strike numbers, but he had a 7:1 K:BB, and he got deep into the game. We will likely be seeing a lot of the spaghetti man in the postseason.
Seth Lugo painted his Mona Lisa. The cherry on top of this excellent season he’s had. He took down the Yankees in Yankees Stadium for #MyRoyals.
7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 10 K, 0 BB, 13.3% SwStr%, 60% Strike%, 26.7% Ball%
Here’s the pitch mix from yesterday:
That is really something else. We have to bust out the pitch plotter for that.
You’d need the whole damn crayon box to draw that! I may have just invented a new term!
“The Crayon Box” = When a pitcher throws a ton of different pitch types
Kutter Crawford qual-banged with a 6:1 K:BB, but gave up two more dingers to make it 31 on the year.
6.1 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 6 K, 1 BB, 11.2% SwStr%, 42.7% Strike%
He has not been as good as he showed early on this year.
He will be an interesting SP to rank next year. His season:
29 GS, 162 IP, 4.00 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 22.7% K%, 6.6% BB%, 1.7 HR/9
My general strategy to is to upgrade the pitchers who lead the league in home runs allowed. There’s a lot of randomness that goes into a stat like that, so when you’re coming off of a year where you give up 30+ homers, you are quite likely to improve on that the next year just due to the ole #Regression #To #The #Mean. That doesn’t mean I want pitchers that gave up homers, but when it’s teamed up with a decent K-BB% and SwStr% and whatnot, I’m into it.
HR/9 Leaders 2024
20 GS Minimum
Logan Allen 2.03
Nick PIvetta 1.75
Kutter Crawford 1.72
Carlos Carrasco 1.65
Andrew Abbott 1.63
Taj Bradley 1.61
Griffin Canning 1.61
Kyle Hendricks 1.61
Aaron Civale 1.61
The two names I will be interested in next year are Crawford (16.1% K-B%) and Bradley (18.8% K-BB%).
Taj Bradley also started yesterday:
6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4 R, 6 K, 2 BB, 17.8% SwStr%
If he can just figure out how to avoid the barrel (11.2% Brl% this year), he will quickly become a stud. His 27% K% and 8% BB% are a nice combo, and we have seen his ceiling a bunch this year. He’s gone for double-digit strikeouts four times and seven or more on nine occasions.
Five scoreless innings for Rhett Lowder:
5 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 K, 0 BB, 7.1% SwStr%, 42.9% Strike%, 39.3% Ball%
It was good to see him with no walks there after walking four in each of his first two starts. The pitch mix now on the season:
I’m extremely unimpressed with him. The fastballs seem bad. I’m probably being overly simplistic when I say this, but I don’t know why you would draft a pitcher in the first round who cannot. I’m going to show you a BOX PLOT now. I have not used BOX PLOTS (you’re support to write it in all caps, don’t ask me why) very often in these notes, but here is one:
This shows you the distribution. The orange line is the average, and everything inside the box is within one standard deviation of that average. The lines at the top and bottom are the max and min. There is a ton of data given in one simple plot, it’s very powerful.
I can even do actual and effective velo right next to each other, so that’s pretty dope.
His effective velo is even worse! I don’t get it, man. If I am a GM, the only way I’m spending a first-round pick on a pitcher is if the guy can rip at least 98.
Let’s see this plot with Logan Gilbert, who has the biggest (I think) positive difference in actual vs. effective velocity.
The circles are outliers. So the top and bottom lines aren’t the raw max and min, they are the max and min when you get rid of the outliers. I would tell you the math on that if I knew it! The point would be to say that just because Gilbert threw a fastball at 100.2, we wouldn’t truly call that his “max”. He’s very unlikely to hit that mark in his next start, for example, so that top line better represents what you might see from day to day.

Hitter Review
We had five different double-dinger days yesterday:
Cedric Mullins
Trea Turner
Michael Harris II
Christian Walker
Tommy Edman
Tommy Edman is of interest. He’s on the Dodgers now, in case you missed that. Here’s what he’s done in 75 PAs:
.296/.320/.424, .743 OPS, 2 HR, 5 SB, 17% K%, 4% BB%
He finally returned from injury on August 19th, and since then he’s started all but one game for LA. Here’s his batting order breakdown since then:
4th: 2
5th: 3
6th: 8
7th: 1
8th: 3
Tommy Edman hitting clean-up for the Dodgers in 2024… some things you can just never see coming. Teoscar Hernandez hit the IL on September 6th. Here’s how the Dodgers have done their lineups since then:
It’s been a boost for Edman and Pages, but Hernandez will be back next week. Edman is roster-worthy if you’re looking for a guy with position flexibility that can steal some bags and help you in batting average. But I wouldn't expect much in terms of other counting stats.
FINITO!
