MLB Daily Notes - September 18th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Prop bet trackers:
Seven weeks left in the home league, and I’m in the finals. I take on PAUL, a friend I made in college who didn’t join the league (it was formed in high school) until 2017, but overall he’s been successful in his time and this will be his second championship appearance in that short time.
Here’s his team:
And here is what is left of mine:
Paul clearly has the better team, but lucky for me it’s a one-week H2H matchup and anything can happen in a weird situation like that! I appreciate everybody’s T&P’s in favor of my team this week and in disfavor of Paul’s, because the rest of the league has formed a mutiny against me and they’ll all be backing Paul here. It would be my 6th championship in 16 seasons, and nobody else even has three! Losers!
I’m a believer in the power of prayer, but I can’t say I believe that God cares if I win this fantasy baseball championship. So I’m not going to pray for me to win, but maybe you have different beliefs… or a voodoo doll… so go ahead, get weird. I’ve been known to say negative things about satanism and the occult on Twitter, but I’m willing to be more open-minded this week if you think it’ll help me bring home this ‘ship…
There are still two solid weeks of regular season games, which means there will be two more full weeks of the daily notes. I’m guessing most people are tapped out now, however, so I’ll probably be writing less and less as we finish this out but I’ll try to highlight the things I think are relevant and interesting.
The people on mass have turned to using me for tough lineup decisions. This happens all season long when you’re a fantasy baseball bro with open DMs, but it really gears up in September. A handful of people a day DM asking me if they should start Wade Miley or Jose Quintana, and it’s just like come on man this is practically abuse! Words are violent! I know a lot about fantasy baseball, it’s true, but I don’t have a freaking crystal ball. How can I really make any kind of guess about who is a better start in a one-game situation between extremely similar pitchers?
I think people mostly just want someone else to make the decision for them - but that’s cowardice! Flip a coin like a man and stick to it!
Most of the time my reply to them is something like that, although I don’t call them a coward in text, I just think it.
If you think I’m being complainy and lame here… shut up.
Pitchers - Yesterday
Carlos Rodon led the day with 20 whiffs on a 19.4% SwStr% and a beautiful 57.3% Strike% and a 10:0 K:BB. Retro Rodon! It was against the Pirates, but this is a breath of fresh air for people (like me) holding on to Rodon through the playoff weeks.
Jesus Luzardo also had another positive start against the Braves (no Acuna though)
6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 8 K, 2 BB
We talked last time about how he’s either been over 25 points or under 10, and that trend continues.
Nick Pivetta just might be the league’s most underrated pitcher as this point, he had another good one yesterday:
6.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 6 K, 0 BB
Quite a bounceback for him after getting sent to the bullpen so guys like Whitlock, Bello, Paxton, and Houck could stay in the rotation. Good for that guy!
Gavin Williams was also quite good
6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 2 BB
That was against the Rangers. Here’s his season pitch mix updated:
Pretty nice 13.2% SwStr%, but everything else is pretty much average. Gotta like a guy with a big fastball like that, but the secondary stuff continues to need some work. I’ll be interested in him next year, I think I would rather have a young guy with a good fastball and bad secondaries than the other way around. It requires some investigation, but it seems to me from experience that guys rapidly improve breaking balls much more often than fastballs.
I’m already getting excited for the offseason. All fall and winter I write go team-by-team doing reviews and previews, and I plan on majorly improving the season-long projections this offseason as well.
The tentative schedule, I think
October: Take a break. Watch the playoffs just for fun without worrying about the fantasy side.
November: Work on the 2024 season projections and start the team-by-team reviews/previews
December: Get most of the team-by-team reviews/previews done
January: Release the projections, begin detailed rankings and analysis
So you’ll be getting baseball content all winter long if you’re a paid sub - and I’m pretty sure I’m going to get my projections out before the other big guys (besides Steamer, they are very very quick). And there’s football stuff coming to, so I’m DOING EVERYTHING I CAN to maintain as many paid subs as possible through the winter.
There will also be a MLB+Python course released at some point in the cold months. That will have a significant cost to it (around $200 I think), but you’ll get a ton of videos & code samples to learn Python and learn about the MLB Savant dataset.

Zack Littell's SL velo (21 pitches) UP 1.8mph to 90.3
Kenny Rosenberg's CU velo (10 pitches) UP 1.7mph to 77.7
Gavin Williams's FF velo (52 pitches) DOWN -1.5mph to 94.3

Zack Littell has been throwing fewer four-seamers:
He threw just 55 pitches yesterday after being in the mid-eighties for a month or so. Not sure if that’ just because he wasn’t pitching well or if the Rays are moving more toward him just being an opener again, but we’ll see. He’s been a decently valuable SP add since the Rays put him in the rotation.

We have a CES sighting on the MFQ! Last 3 weeks:
57 PA, .364/.386/.655, 4 HR, 15.9% Brl%, 19.3% K%, .408 xwOBA
Oh baby! For the season:
.273/.328/.443, 8 Hr, 9.4% Brl%, 27.8% K%, 5.1% BB%
So not a great line overall, but if he finishes the year on a tear you’ll have to wonder if he had finally just gotten over the adjustment period and was ready to smash at the MLB level like he did all through the minors. He’ll be a tough rank next year.
No better example of a reason to be cautious with top prospects than Elly De La Cruz this year, who is now down to the line:
.235/.294/.404, 11 HR, 7.6% Brl%, 33.6% K%, 7.3% BB%
He has stolen a ton of bases which has kept his fantasy value afloat, but nothing else has been good. He will certainly be pretty expensive next year given the insane upside he has, but almost everybody was wrong about that guy when he got called up - besides little old me! I’m just so, so humble.
