MLB Daily Notes - September 18th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
It’s going very well for my team in the semifinal. I’ve had five SPs go so far, and they have all qualbanged.
Imanaga: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 12 K
Lopez: 6.1 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 3 K
Ragans: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 6 K
Snell: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 12 K
King: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 7 K
That’s a 1.89 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP, and an 11.34 K/9 through 33.1 innings (includes a Helsley save). That’s been enjoyable to watch.
SP Streamers
So many of you are just going nuts on these SP streamers. I’m getting like a dozen messages a day asking me who people should pick up for today. That’s the problem with points leagues, they don’t punish bad outings nearly enough. Something like 90% of starts get positive points, so it just becomes a game of who can jam in the most innings - and that’s lame. But I live in reality, and this is the reality. Here are the SPs I’d be targeting.
Today
DJ Herz vs. NYM
Dean Kremer vs. SF

Pitcher Review
Blake Snell led the day with 22 whiffs, but Jordan Montgomery was up there with him with 17 and a 21.5% SwStr%. He didn’t do much well outside of those 17 whiffs (43% Strike%, 4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER), but that’s something!
Bryan Woo had a huge 21.3% SwStr%, but the Yankees smacked him around.
4.2 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 7 K, 1 BB
Too many strikes for the Wooster there. He has now thrown 59% of his pitches in the strike zone this year. His teammate George Kirby, legendary strike-thrower, is at 52%.
This is what a 59% Zone% looks like.
There are way too many dots on that plot to make sense of, but it’s a fun plot anyway.
I can’t get myself to say this is a good thing. It has worked for Woo overall. He has a 2.95 ERA and 0.88 WHIP on an 18% K-BB%. He leads the league in WHIP+ at 1.43. So maybe I’m being a jackass. I just think he should go for a few more chases.
2024 WHIP+ Leaders (15 GS minimum)
Woo 1.43
Skenes 1.44
Snell 1.45
Skubal 1.47
Gilbert 1.48
Sale 1.48
Glasnow 1.51
Valdez 1.52
Wheeler 1.54
Bryce Miller 1.58
Ten more strikeouts for Frankie Montas.
5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 10 K, 2 BB
This was against the Phillies. He’s been on some kind of run. Since August 14:
7 GS, 41.2 IP, 3.02 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 28.7% K%, 9.6% BB%
The four-seamer has been awesome in this stretch with the 16.9% SwStr%, .183 SLG, and no homers allowed. That sets up the rest of his stuff nicely. The guy has a live arm, that’s never been a problem - so maybe he has pieced together the right pitch mix here. I don’t know. He’s been mediocre all year until this month-long stretch. I’m still not buying it, but maybe he’s someone who should be on fantasy rosters for his final two starts.
Griffin Canning did it for us!
6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 6 K, 2 BB, 15% SwStr%
He avoided the Reid Detmers fate. He threw more balls (43%) than strikes (42%), so this is a pretty lucky outcome - but that’s what the White Sox can do for you. Good stream there if you took it!
Tylor Megill also was a success for those who streamed:
6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 4 K, 2 BB
It was a bad 11% SwStr% and 41.5% Strike%, but success is success! We don’t care about the future right now, we just want those sweet, sweet box score results.
Bobby Miller needs to put in some serious work on his command or something this offseason. Or maybe he should just go try cricket or something.
2 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 2 K, 1 BB, 41.5% Strike%, 41.5% Ball%
Bar graphs are pretty lame, but in this case, it tells a good bit of the story:
The stuff is still there for Miller; the command is not. I’ll say it once again, I would rather a pitcher with stuff but no command rather than the reverse in my organization. It’s easier to fix command than stuff, but Miller has a steep hill to climb. I think it’s best for us to completely avoid him in drafts next year. If he turns it around, fine, but man, he looks rough.
Shane Baz had 18 whiffs and an 18.8% SwStr%. That’s very encouraging, but it’s too little too late for me. His season SwStr% is still just 12.2% and his Strike% is below the league average at 46.8%. The Stuff+ is there with him at 113, so maybe there’s hope for him to get the strikeouts back next year. The big hurdle he’s cleared this year is staying healthy. He has cleared 100 innings on the year, and that’s a big accomplishment for him after throwing none last year and 40 in 2022. We’d have to call it a successful season for Baz. His ADP will be very interesting next year, but I imagine I’ll be out on it.
Nick Pivetta is the new king of “sweet K:BB but bad result”.
4.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 6 K, 0 BB, 18.1% SwStr%
Since July 24th, he has an elite 25% K-BB% but a 5.13 ERA. There are 15 SPs in the second half with a K-BB% above 22%. Their group ERA is 2.98. Pivetta has the second-worst at 4.60 (Crochet at 6.46).
The reason for that is the 2.3 HR/9 he’s allowed. He’s now given up the fourth-most homers in the league.
HRs Allowed 2024
Crawford 33
Berrios 29
Rodon 39
Pivetta 28
Canning 28

Hitter Review
I told this guy on Twitter yesterday to bench Wyatt Langford for Josh Naylor. Langford homered, drove in two, scored three times, and walked twice. He’s now hitting .345/.424/.672 with four homers, 15 runs, 12 RBI, and three steals in September. That guy wrote back to me after the game and called me a “butt head.”
I’ve only ever made my wife really angry at me once, and it was even before we were married. We don’t have to get into the details there, but at the peak of her anger, she called me a butthead over a text. That is the meanest thing she’s ever said to me in 10 years of being together. I think she still feels bad about it, I mean she really let have it.
Now, you are probably thinking, “Yeah, right, this guy’s wife has been mad at him way more than he thinks”. But no, you’re wrong. You don’t know me, bro. My wife is the easiest woman in the world to be married to, and I’m honestly up there on the husband ranks too. I’m really cool, you don’t even know.
There was something endearing to me about the worst insult she could muster being “butthead”. But with this dude on Twitter, it’s kind of pathetic. I screwed you over bro, let it out. Don’t hold back. It’s the Internet, I can handle it. Bring out the big guns. I know that if you tell me to go to kill myself you get banned for a day, so stop short of that - but you can be meaner than “butt head”. And also, butthead is one word.
There’s this woman on the season of Top Chef my wife and I are watching. Short, nice-looking Asian woman. Excellent chef, very nice woman, pleasant to work with - but she swears so much. And that’s a turn off to me. I’m going full sexist here, no doubt, but I think it’s more okay when men swear than when women do it. Women are beautiful, elegant creatures. Men are basically animals. It just makes sense to me that speech should match your character, and the character of women is far superior to men. So if anybody is using vulgarity, it should be men.
But it’s a better world if nobody swears, although for some reason, swear words can be really freaking funny when delivered correctly.
So yeah. I’d say sorry to that Twitter guy, but I’d give him the same advice again. Josh Naylor is better than Wyatt Langford right now.
Two dingers yesterday: Shea Langeliers and Ian Happ
Triston AssAss hit a dinger yesterday on my bench. He has an 11.2% Brl% on the year, but a 34% K% and a poor .322 xwOBA. He’ll stay on my bench and I’d say he should stay on yours too!
Spencer Steer ripped one as well. He’s been bad this year though with a .744 OPS, a .237 xBA, and a .321 xwOBA. The guy is capable of some real hot stretches, but overall he’s been pretty MID in his career (108 career wRC+).
Otto Lopez squeaked one out of the park (I know that because I watched the replay of it because he’s on my team now and it pleases me to watch videos of my players hitting home runs even as replays). He’s not hitting .329/.380/.529 with three homers and three steals over the last three weeks. I told you to pick him up like a week or so ago too, so sometimes I’m right!
Luisangel Acuna hit his first big league dingjob. He has a .455 batting average through 11 PAs, and he’s already hit a ball at 109.5. He’s someone to watch the rest of the year as he’ll figure to be part of the Mets right from the jump next year. We’ve tracked 21 swings from him so far and his bat speed shows up at 73.7. That’s 2mph above the league average. Positive sign there. The weird thing is that he was pretty bad in AAA this year.
587 PA, .258/.299/.355, 7 HR, 16% K%, 7 HR, 39 SB
I would not be adding him for the near future.
And Jordan Walker homered! So, the breakout is finally here. He’s definitely figured it out now, you guys, trust me.
Have a happy Wednesday!
