MLB Daily Notes - September 20th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
This summer, my wife started talking about wanting to go on a little trip without the kids at some point. I don’t know how many times she mentioned it, but I heard her at least once. My first reaction is like bro we have three kids under six years old, it’s kinda brutal to put that all on the grandparents. I think we went away for one night back in 2021 for a wedding or something and her parents watched our two kids, but other than that we have never both been away from them for a full day.
So anyways, I decided that I would listen to her and take action. She might have been thinking beaches or the tropics or somewhere exciting. Instead, I give her one night in Cincinnati for a meaningless Pirates game. Marriage is all about compromise, you know?
At the time I booked it, the Pirates were right in the thick of the Wild Card race. Skenes was mowing dudes down and the offense was really coming into form. It was shaping up to be a sweet second half of the season, so this game was going to potentially be sick. The optimal outcome would have been like Paul Skenes vs. Hunter Greene in a game with massive playoff implications. But the wheel turned as it always turns, and the Pirates flamed out pretty much exactly right after I bought the tickets, and now we’re heading to Cincinnati to watch Mitch Keller vs. Nick Martinez in a game that means absolutely nothing.
So the hype meter isn’t as hype as it could be, but it’s still there. We’re still registering some level of hype. I bought these sicks seats right behind home plate, so it’s going to be a real nice view. Plenty of exciting players to see, and the key point is that it’s a night away with just the two of us. My wife will get to sleep all night uninterrupted, unless I start crying for some reason. That would actually be pretty funny. If I just get up at 2:30am and start crying. Right when she thinks she’s escaped it for a night…
Speaking of hype though, I have Shohei Ohtani on my team in the semifinal, so that’s looking pretty good for me. I’m on the bottom here:
My cup is overflowing with good fortune this week. I’ve had eight starters go, and they have all put up quality starts. 11 steals is an enormous number in this league, and I’ve done that before the weekend even begins. It’s a good team I’ve put together, but yeah - all of the variance is going my way right now.
Pitcher Review
Brandon Pfaadt had the best start of his career.
7 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 12 K, 0 BB, 58.7% Strike%, 30.8% Ball%
There have not been many starts that good. Very impressive stuff for Pfaadt. He’s now at a 23.8% K% with a 5.4% BB% on the year. He’s been pretty unlucky this year:
ERA: 4.66
SIERA: 3.70
xFIP: 3.62
I will be buying on him again next year.
Chris Sale pushed further toward his Cy Young award.
5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 2 BB, 19.4% SwStr%
The floor on him has been astounding this year. As a general rule, I consider anything above 15 or so DraftKings points a positive start. Sale has done that almost every single time this year:
He has as many starts over 30 points as under 20 (8). Really impressive stuff, and his 2.38 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and 26.5% K-BB% across 29 starts are certainly deserving of the Cy Young.
Clarke Schmidt has earned a roster spot in the playoffs and a rotation spot for next year.
5 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 3 BB, 9.1% SwStr%
The 42.4% Strike% was weak here, seven more strikeouts brought his season K% to 27.5%, very impressive.
It will be interesting to see how high Yusei Kikuchi goes in drafts next year. If you added him when he got moved to the Astros, you’re profiting majorly. Last night against the Angels:
6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 9 K, 1 BB
As an Astro:
9 GS, 54 IP, 3.00 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 31.6% K%, 6.0% BB%, 1.3 HR/9
He will be a free agent after this season, so some of his draft stock will depend on where he lands. But I’d say he learned something here about how good he can be when focusing on the slider.
He threw the slider 17% of the time with the Blue Jays and it earned a 14.7% SwStr%, a 40% Strike%, and a .347 SLG against. With Houston, he’s thrown it 37% of the time with a 14.8% SwStr%, a 50% Strike%, and a .225 SLG against. So he’s improved it and thrown it more. I would imagine he sticks with that approach next year. And we’ll see him in the postseason.
Kumar Rocker showed some of the downside of a young pitcher yesterday.
3 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 4 BB, 9.9% SwStr%
That’s not the worst thing in the world. You knew that he would be a four inning guy when you picked him up, you were probably just going for the strikeouts - and he got you five more of those last night.

Hitter Review
I really don’t see any way I can help your fantasy teams on the hitting side anymore. Most of your leagues will end this weekend, and you’re probably done manipulating your roster.
First, let me just show you the Ohtani game logs plot, because it’s funny.
Massively overshadowed by that was Michael Harris II, he scored 41 of his own fantasy points. He has seven homers in September and has the slash line up to .251/.290/.405.
It’s been a pretty disappointing season for him overall, but the power has come back in the second half (.493 SLG) while he’s cut down on the strikeouts (20%). I’ll be in on him again next year. He is one of these guys that will be streaky given his swing-heaviness. He has a 55% Swing% on the year, one of the highest in baseball. Notably, that’s down five points in the second half - so maybe there was a conscious change there. I like it.
Just in case you’re looking for some hitter help for next week, here are the low-owned OPS leaders over the last three weeks:
Pavin Smith 1.250
Luke Raley 1.122
Victor Robles 1.107
Spencer Horwitz 1.106
Justin Turner .997
Garrett Mitchell .939
Andrew McCutchen .911
Andrew Vaughn .907
Mike Yastrzemski .889
Otto Lopez .880
Doing xwOBA instead, and bolding the players that are on both lists (meaning their high OPS is not a product of good luck):
Pavin Smith .492
Luke Raley .450
Spencer Horwitz .408
Jonathan Aranda .404
Lars Nootbaar .404
Victor Robles .392
Michael Toglia .391
Mike Yastrzemski .383
Trey Sweeney .382
Justin Turner .380
Hope that helps somebody. The notes will be short tomorrow, so for those of you in leagues that end Sunday - my work is done. I hope I’ve helped some people to championships, and most importantly, I hope I’ve entertained you along the way.
Send me those championship screenshots on Twitter, by the way, I love to see it!
