MLB Daily Notes - September 27th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
First, the playoff picture update.
National League
The Dodgers and Phillies are locked into the top seeds, but they’re jostling for the top seed. Will they be motivated enough by the potential NLCS home field advantage to play all their guys all weekend? They do both get four days of rest before their playoff series begin, so I would guess you’ll see normal lineup from them this weekend.
The Brewers (#3 seed) and Padres (#4 seed) are locked into their spots, they will both host the full Wild Card series.
Two spots remain for the Mets, D’Backs, and Braves. Their games are all extremely important this weekend.
American League
Same story here with the Yankees and Guardians playing for the #1 seed.
The Astros have two fewer wins than the Orioles, but will get the #3 seed as the division winner. The O’s need one more win (or one loss from both the Royals and Tigers) to ensure they host the Wild Card series.
The Tigers and Royals just need to win one more or have the Twins and Mariners lose one more to lock in their Wild Card spots. They are dead even, so we’ll almost surely see one of them head to Houston and the other head to Baltimore.
The games to watch tonight would be
Royals vs. Braves
Mets vs. Brewers
Orioles vs. Twins (must win for the Twins)
Athletics vs. Mariners (must win for the Mariners)
The Oakland Athletics were the hot topic (shout out to malls in 2005) yesterday. They played their final game in The Coliseum. They’ll head to Sacramento for three years before probably moving into Las Vegas.
The Twitter world was dog-piling on the Athletics owner for taking the team out of Oakland. Some really vicious, nasty stuff. Saw one guy even say the guy will surely go to hell for it. I’m very happy to not believe in a God who sends people to hell for their business decisions, but that’s a different story.
As I’ve said here before, I was born a contrarian and I cannot change. If everybody has one opinion, I’m naturally trying to do what I can to not have that opinion. And if everybody is saying the same thing, I’m not going to say the thing they’re saying - even if I think the thing they’re saying is correct.
My first reaction is to defend the team owners. That’s mostly because I’m never with the mob, and the mob is always against the owner. These are business people, and they own their teams. You don’t get to tell someone what they should do with their property, and these guys can do what they want. The team need to be owned by somebody, and the teams have to make money for the sport to say in existence.
That said, I have much less sympathy for the guy with this specific situation. There’s clearly fans there, it’s not like Miami or Tampa Bay where you wouldn’t even sell out a playoff game. I imagine that if the Athletics ended up with a decent team, they’d make plenty of money in Oakland. Las Vegas is a much different city than your typical city, so yeah - you’re not going to a place where kids will grow up down the road and because diehard fans.
There’s clearly one motivation for all of this - and that’s money - and it’s not even a choice between continuing to make money or going out of business. That is the most unfortunate thing. Taking a team from a local fanbase and moving to a place where there really can’t be a new one.
It’s greed. Of course it is, everything in business in the world is greed. There’s certainly a difference between being profit-focused and outright greedy. And greed is bad. There is no shortage of Bible verses about greed and the love and worship of money. I was told I’m not supposed to push my Christian morality on other people though! So what do I do? Ha ha!
We live in an economy that is driven by stock prices and ever-growing revenues. In the sports world, gambling has a quickly increasing grip on the picture too. I was Cincinnati last weekend and there’s an MGM Sports Book right across the street. It seems to me that the value of these sports leagues and teams has somewhat plateaued after decades of rapid growth. When you hit a plateau as a business, you have two options:
Be happy where you’re at, and cut back on cost a little bit if needed
Do whatever you can to find another way to make new money
I’ve never seen anybody opt for the first option, so this is where we’re at. That’s why we see the NFL playing games all over the globe now and doing all of this stuff to try to attract women. They got too close to the market cap on American males, so they’re pushing for new demographics.
Eventually, it will all fall apart. Probably not in our lifetimes, but the end of the worship of money is always destruction.
What do we do about it? I say we just realize what it is, avoid greed and selfishness in our own lives, and try to not become a person who throws stones at other people online because it make you feel better about yourself
I didn’t intend to write all of that, but now you have some of my unsolicited thoughts on the matter.
The great thing about being a Bible believing Christian is that you become a very consistent person. A ton of people think I’m wrong, for sure, but I don’t think a charge of moral inconsistency can be thrown at me. A charge of hypocrisy - yes, for sure, but not inconsistency. Secular morality is ever-changing. One thing that is abhorrent to people today will be totally fine in 20 years, so it’s nice to have a set standard given to us by a very old book so we don’t have to navigate those ridiculous waters.
If you’re waiting for the on-field baseball talk, I don’t really have much for you once again. Corbin Burnes gave us a taste of what we’ll see the rest of the weekend. He was limited to just 69 pitches as the Orioles head into the postseason. Only Gerrit Cole went for a high pitch count at 101. He got through 6.2 scoreless, but still had just eight whiffs.
Gerrit Cole K% by Year
2021: 33.5%
2022: 32.4%
2023: 27.0%
2024; 25.4%
His four-seamer has averaged 95.9mph this year, that’s down almost a point from 96.7 last year. That velocity peaked in 2022 at 97.8, so he’s a long way from there. It’s awesome for the Yankees and for all of us viewers to have him back healthy for the playoffs, but he’s not the ace he used to be. If the Yankees go down early, it will likely because of the lack of dominance in their rotation. But Aaron Judge and Juan Soto can make up for a lot.
I’m traveling for the weekend. Back to Pittsburgh so my wife can be at a baby shower for Producer Lee and wife. They’re having their first baby in December, so that’s very exciting. Shout out to Producer Lee, who helps me out with graphics and other stuff here. I will be tasked with the three kids on Sunday afternoon right at the end of the fantasy baseball championship match against Clint! The sacrifices I make.
So, I will talk to you very briefly the next two days and then we’ll have our farewell Daily Notes on Monday before getting into playoff articles. Goodbye.
