MLB Daily Notes - September 2nd
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
It is Labor Day. I don’t even know what that means exactly. This is by far the least impressive “holiday” on the board, and that means I have to be somewhat brief here in the notes. Later, I will end up at an Amish-run animal farm in some other part of Indiana. The kids will like it. Animals smell really bad, though.
The MLB Data Warehouse fantasy league playoffs begin today, so that’s exciting. I got really hot the last ten weeks or so and sneaked into the playoffs as the #6 seed. So let’s all hope and pray that I take that down.
Pitcher Review
Zach Eflin has really figured something out. He has 24 strikeouts and two runs allowed in his last three starts after doing this yesterday against the Rockies:
7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 9 K, 1 BB
His last three outings:
32.4% K%, 2.7% BB%, 50.8% Strike%, 16.2% SwStr%, 31.2% Ball%
That’s an uncharacteristic SwStr% for him, to say the least. He really ramped up the curveball usage yesterday to a season-high 42%. Pitch mix from these last three outings:
He’s been dominating with that curveball. Interesting to see, and good for the Orioles to maybe get an improved version of Eflin as we head toward the playoffs.
Brandon Pfaadt struck out ten Dodgers in a winning effort. That was good to see after he had given up 14 earned runs on 25 hits in his previous three starts. He still gave up hits (8) and runs (3) yesterday, but he was definitely on his game.
He is someone I’d like to be starting down the stretch in a 12-team or deeper league, so if he’s available, you can jump at him.
We saw some of Spencer Schwellenbach’s worst work yesterday:
5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 1 BB, 7.3% SwStr%
The slider and curveball were not sharp. He didn’t get a single whiff on 19 of those pitches:
The 82 pitches is notable as well, but not overly so since he threw 106 last time. The Braves certainly are going to want him for the playoffs. Does that mean they ease off of him a bit in September? It’s possible. Clearly, you’re starting him this week, so there’s not much to talk about right now.
Alex Cobb is back and made a fine start against the Pirates.
6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 R, 6 K, 0 BB, 13.8% SwStr%
We haven’t seen much of him this year, so let’s get a look at the pitch mix:
It’s all about the ground ball with the guy. Anyone throwing a splitter and sinker 87% of the time needs to (and will) get a lot of ground balls, and now Cobb’s rate is up above 60% again. I don’t think he’ll get many whiffs, and the walks have never been great for him - so you’ll have a bad WHIP and some bad outings when the BABIP doesn’t go his way. But there’s a good chance he posts a decent ERA, so you can use him if you’re in need of that kind of pitching help. The quality starts and wins could come in as well, the Guardians are a good team and you wouldn’t think they’d be keeping his pitch counts down on purpose.
Caden Dana deserves a look. He debuted yesterday:
95 pitches, 6 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 4 BB, 13.7% SwStr%
This is the Angels’ top prospect. This year in AA:
23 GS, 135.2 IP, 2.59 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 27.4% K%, 7.3% BB%
Him throwing 95 pitches right out of the gate is a good sign. Here’s the pitch mix:
Middling fastball velocity, and he did not command it well yesterday. I would think he has better command than that, given the low minor-league walk rate. And there you see he has slider/cutter/curveball/changeup to try to back up the fastball. This is an interesting profile, and he’s someone you could consider streaming in for your very deep leagues. It does sound like the Angels will go six-man rotation to finish out this year, so you’re probably only getting 4 to 5 starts from Dana down the stretch. I wouldn’t give up anybody that’s actually decent for him - but it’s something to consider.
His next start would be next weekend against the Rangers, and then he’d likely take on the Astros after that - so that’s not a pleasant schedule. But welcome to the big leagues!
For large parts of this season, I have forgotten about this cool “SP Next 2 Starts SOS” resource I have. It looks at each pitcher’s next two probable opponents and grades them. Here are your softest upcoming SP schedules:
Maybe this Osvaldo Bido thing can keep going for a little bit longer, he’s a good guy to add right now if you’re in trouble. On the other end of it:
I’ve made that resource free for all for the rest of the season, so you can follow the link above - that updates every morning.
Alright, I’ve gotta go smell some livestock. Enjoy your Labor Days and I hope you all win your fantasy leagues this year except for the five other people that made the MLB DW playoffs with me.
